View Full Version : Allan Melvin R. I. P.
James 01-19-2008, 02:55 AM The man we all remember for his role as Sam the Butcher has died. A Yahoo! article says he was born in 1923 and was 84, but most every source I have looked at has said 1922.
Here's the article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080119/ap_en_ot/obit_melvin;_ylt=AuhpY7Surh7GK3MBL5AkCaEVkmwF
:crying:
One of the truly great character actors on TV, not to mention his cartoon work.
Rest in peace.
OH Nuts! 01-19-2008, 09:53 AM Ditto, he was in so many shows, and always added that somethin' extra...I esp. enjoyed him as Sam on The Brady Bunch and as Barney on All In The Family.

Adamantium 01-19-2008, 12:51 PM For years I thought he was already dead. In fact, my sister told me that that's why he wasn't in "A Very Brady Christmas." It wasn't until the Phil Silvers' DVD where Mr. Melvin did commentary that I found out he was alive.
I'm sorry to hear of his passing. But he left a wonderful legacy on television. I can't imagine there's a person out there who hasn't seen him in something. Granted he's probably most popular for "The Brady Bunch" and "All in the Family." And he popped up a few times in memorable episodes of "The Andy Griffith Show" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show."
R.I.P. Allan Melvin

Scoobiedoo30 01-19-2008, 01:29 PM Allan will be missed
ComedyGuy 01-19-2008, 03:12 PM He was on TAGS many times as both good guys and bad guys and he played both very well too.
He was also Sgt. Hacker on Gomer Pyle USMC
Scoobiedoo30 01-19-2008, 03:16 PM He was also on All in The Family and Archie Bunkers Place
James 01-19-2008, 05:12 PM And he popped up a few times in memorable episodes of "The Andy Griffith Show" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show."
I remember seeing him on The Andy Griffith Show playing, IIRC, a criminal. It was one of the black and white episodes made between 1960 and 1965. When I saw him I said to myself, "That's Allan Melvin! That's Sam the Butcher!" It's one thing for there to be an antagonist on the show, but it's completely another for said antagonist to be played by one of your favorite actors! You almost don't know who to root for! I watched the closing credits for his name and his name came up! I was right!
Sorry to hear this news. R.I.P.
Cheryl Harrell 01-20-2008, 07:47 AM I thought he was already dead. So sorry to hear about him. He was good on Bradys, Gomer Pyle, AITF etc. Rip...
bfuller07 01-21-2008, 03:16 AM I guess my favorite role was him as Sgt. Hacker on the Gomer Pyle Show, he and Sgt. Carter was just so funny working together.
RIP- Allan
James 01-21-2008, 03:45 AM I actually heard his death mentioned in an hourly news report at 2 pm Saturday on the radio. (I first learned via Yahoo! News, by the way. I posted a Yahoo! link to the story, as you may recall.) The radio station gets its news from Fox News. Even as a fan of The Brady Bunch who enjoyed his Sam character I was surprised since he was in like only four episodes of the show. The report had the theme song to TBB playing in the background when it said he was known for his role as Sam, as well as being attracted to Alice, which was very touching.
Pavan 01-21-2008, 05:31 PM He will certainly be missed. Loved him as Sam and Barney and his various animated roles. See our tribute to him and also a link to a video clip RTN did as a tribute:

TripperFan 01-21-2008, 05:34 PM Geez - we were just discussing him last week too. They all seem to be going now.
Rest in Peace Allan - you played a lot of great roles very well!
tv star collector 01-22-2008, 08:44 AM I guess my favorite role was him as Sgt. Hacker on the Gomer Pyle Show, he and Sgt. Carter was just so funny working together.
RIP- Allan
He and the late Howie Morris also made a great team and worked together
many, many times (at least once on The Andy Griffith Show and in
many cartoons, incl. Magilla Gorilla, MushMouse & Punkin Puss and
Beetle Bailey).
PGood97041 01-26-2008, 12:05 AM Who could ever forget the episode when Greg and Bobby get locked in Sam's meat freezer? These days Sam woulda been sent up on child endangerment laws for not having the right lock, but it all worked out for the best, as it usually did on the Brady Bunch.
And come on...with Sam making all that dough selling his choice cuts of beef, he could never come up with a rock for poor Alice?
But seriously, anybody who watched the Brady Bunch always will remember Sam the Butcher, even though he wasn't in that many episodes.
Well done (no pun intended)!
