View Full Version : Bummed Out
80s_Fan 01-18-2008, 02:12 PM I'm really bummed out now because I'm having a hard time finding a job that I like, and want. I've been out of work now since October 13, 2007. Since then I have no money coming in but, that will change soon once I go re-apply for (welfare - not crazy about that but, need money).
I'm so bummed out that I just feel like screaming, and throwing things, etc...
I don't want to settle for just any job like I used to do because I've wasted enough of my life doing that, and I'm not getting any younger. I will be 39 this coming March, and I want to be happy with a job I like or extremely love, and be stabile, with good money coming in, etc...
If by the time I turn 40; I'm still in this situation, I am gonna go crazy.
It's affecting my relationship with my boyfriend, family & friends.
It's not fair, I want to be happy, successful, stabile, all that great stuff.
I want a good future, and move ahead in my life.
bingbangbaby 01-18-2008, 02:47 PM Awww, I'm sorry to hear that, and I know the feeling. I've had good paying jobs but they haven't been very satisfying. I think anyone who can say they truly love their job is really lucky and probably in a minority. I think for most people their job is "ok." Don't lower your standards, but don't expect perfection, either.
But maybe what you need is a career counselor or a headhunter, someone who can sit down with you and analyze your education and skills and what you think you want to do, then help find the opportunities. Sometimes you can even get resume and cover letter help so that you can put your best foot forward when it comes time to apply and interview. Maybe a temp agency is the way to go too...if you're someone who likes to move around or likes different challenges, then you might enjoy that, and it'll keep you working for the time being. Sometimes people find their ideal fit that way too, and the company they are temping for doesn't want to let them go and will hire them permanently.
But the very first thing you have to do is wipe away the sadness and despair (even if it's just during business hours :D) and get your head in the game because that's a huge part of interviewing, is portraying a good attitude and not coming across as desperate or self-pitying. Interviewers spot ambivalence immediately and can cut you off before you even get started in an interview. Beg or borrow the book Job Interviews For Dummies if you can (but you're no dummy!) it has great insight and questions and ways to help get yourself prepared when you've been discouraged or haven't exactly been in the right frame of mind. I think it is available at the library. You can do it, I know you can...I can tell just by your post!
Good luck!

Thanks for your input, and everything. I really do appreciate it.
TripperFan 01-18-2008, 05:44 PM Why are you applying for Welfare when you haven't been without work for all that long? You should have EI benefits coming to you.
I lost my job October 27th, and did get a couple weeks of severence, but I applied for EI (very easy now - just do it online) and I've got money coming in from them.
Hopefully something will pickup soon. I was feeling like you but got an interview this past Wednesday and they called me yesterday afternoon for a 2nd interview next week. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Ah! The second interview! I love that feeling!

Most jobs are aggravation. Maybe 20-30% have jobs that are truly rewarding. Mine can make me pull my hair out--but the pay is good so I try to grin and bear it--but sometimes its hard. Really hard.
Have you thought about temping? The pay isn't great but it gives you the structure of working, and if you do good on your assignments the agencies will send you out a lot--it is not uncommon for co's to hire a temp they really like....just an option that has worked for me.

You could flip burgers until you find something more permanent. Just a thought.

I know, I'm looking for something like that, it's just that not many places are hiring right now
80s_Fan 02-11-2008, 02:32 PM Here's the latest on my situation; the good thing that has happened is that I have been accepted for (welfare) so at least now money will be coming in every month. It's not great money, and I'm not proud of it but, it's better than nothing. The bad thing is I'm still without a job, and I have been applying to more places (mainly stores like: the bay, sears, etc....) and no such luck. I am not even getting calls; one here and there but, that's it.
I'm not getting any interviews; the last one I went to was I believe just before the holidays last year. I'm really getting frustrated and discouraged.
I'm at the point where I even considered going back to "Zellers" but, they are not doing too good right now; they are cutting the hours for some.
Even if I decided to go back; there's no guarantee that they will take me especially when I quit because I was no longer happy there and everything. I don't really want to go back there but, on the other hand I'm going
being home, and not having a steady job, you know??
