View Full Version : Cuts on the season 3 DVD's
Lee G 01-17-2008, 11:56 AM I recently watched the episode ONE OF OUR SHELLS IS MISSING on the DVD. I don't know what part they cut, but it looks like there's clearly an edit in the middle part of the episode. This episode times at about 24:30 on the DVD, so about a minute is cut because these episodes are supposed to run about 25:30 or thereabouts. Any episodes on the Gomer Pyle DVD's that run under 25 minutes, you can figure something is cut. I'm buying these DVD's because I like the show, but these cuts to the episodes are totally ridiculous and a rip off to the consumer. Apparently there are issues with the music that's used in the episodes. That is insane. If they were allowed to use a particular song when filming an episode, then said song should be OK for the episodes in future TV airings and consumer releases as well. This stuff is nonsense and a pile of BS. It's just bogus legal crap and the consumer ends up the victim.
omg65 01-17-2008, 12:33 PM I totally agree Lee G.
It's funny you mention that episode One of Our Shells is Missing. As you know I have been recording Gomer Pyle for about the last 2 months off of a local station and that episode just aired this week.To the best that I can determine, these episodes are uncut. The ones I timed minus the commercials came out around 25 minutes and 30 seconds.I'll watch my homebrew episodes I'm recording instead of buying anymore seasons.I didn't record every season 3 episode that aired and the run is now into season 4.I'm trying to record all the season 4 and 5 episodes.I figure it would be nice to have seasons 4 and 5 unedited.
Lee G 01-17-2008, 01:56 PM That's cool if you are getting uncut eps of Gomer Pyle from TV. I'm doing the same thing right now with The Patty Duke Show. A local station is airing uncut episodes, I'm recording em as they air them.

You will notice that the first season release is entitled "The Complete First Season", while the second and third are titled "The Second/Third Season".

I think there are also some first season episodes that are cut on the DVD. So I guess they figured they'd better remove the word "complete" from the packaging. CBS has done a hack job with these episodes, if I weren't a big Gomer Pyle fan I wouldn't buy this stuff. Sony's DVD's of I Dream Of Jeannie have the same problem. Those episodes are hacked to pieces also, but they continue to sell them as "complete" seasons. Buyer beware!
BarneyFife 03-13-2008, 10:01 PM I just don't understand the gripe on cut episodes. It seems to me, If you still know whats going on, it shouldn't matter. It's not like they cut a 25 minute episode down to 17 or 18 minutes. I've got most of the episodes taped on VHS tapes, and I don't know If their cut or not, (probably are) but I still enjoy the hell out of them. I'm not gonna worry about a minute being cut out.
Lee G 03-14-2008, 09:42 AM For completists, it is a gripe. It's a gripe even if a small part of an episode is cut. It's unfortunate that fans of old TV shows are basically at the mercy of the studios. If you want an old show bad enough, you have to buy it and accept what the studio decides to throw your way. There have been a number of TV show releases with uncut episodes, no gripe there. But Gomer Pyle is just one example where some episodes are sliced to pieces, and this is inexcusable.
treky 03-15-2008, 09:48 PM I've never really understood all this about music edits. If the music's a problem sometimes; how come it wasn't when the shows were filmed or taped?
I know that with "WKRP IN CINCINATTI" it was a problem, but they got around it by putting the show on videotape instead of film.
storrs19 06-20-2008, 10:12 AM I realize this is an old thread but I just have to sound off! Living in Louisville, KY our local stations show nothing but modern garbage. You people who get Gomer Puyle USMC and The Patty Duke Show, both apparently unedited are very lucky and very smart for taping them. I know on my bootleg My Three Sons dvd set many episodes were taped from a local station somewhere and they all run around 25 minutes. It is amazing that stations are these old shows unedited.

The local stations here in Philadelphia don't air any shows that aired before 1998-lol
