View Full Version : Have you ever been SHOCKED to hear of a death that happened years ago?

I'm in shock. I recently started watching, The Steve Harvey Show. It's not on dvd, but there's a 5-episode, "Best Of" dvd available. I got it from Netflix today, and was so excited for my husband to see it. I was reading online, on what episodes are on the dvd, and read a viewer comment expressing surprise that there wasn't a tribute to the actor, Merlin Santana, who was shot and killed in 2002. He was only 26. He played Romeo, one of the students, and he was a riot. I've wondered why I haven't seen him in movies or tv since the show ended in 2002. I now have my answer. :(

This happened before, with Glenn Quinn, who played Mark on Roseanne. :( I feel today, the same way I felt when I made this 2003 post.

It also happened to me about five years ago, when someone told me that an ex-boyfriend had died. I hadn't seen him in 15 years, but we were together for two years before I met my husband. I wasn't so much sad, but more shocked.

Merlin Santana also made a funny guest appearance on Sister, Sister. He played a boy who asked out both twins (at different times) thinking they were the same girl. The look on his face when he discovered his mistake was priceless. I didn't hear about what had happened to him until a couple of years ago, and I too was very surprised and saddened. Same thing with Glenn Quinn. :(

I also still can't believe that John Ritter and Michael Landon are dead :(

I wasn't shocked to hear about it but anyway...

It's hard for me to believe that almost everybody from Bewitched is gone now. I believe only the people who played Tabitha and Adam are still alive. So many of the adult actors died before they hit 50 or 60. :(

Also... Victor French and Michael Landon. I was surprised to find out later that French's passing was the reason why Michael Landon chose not to continue with Highway to Heaven for a sixth season. Little did we know Landon would pass away just a little over two years later... creepy!

From the age 5 until I was 10 my childhood friend and I were crazy about Elvis! Our parents bought us all his movies, pictures etc. and since my parents have his music on old records we'd pop one on and dance for hours to his voice. Then when I was around 10, I said something like "mommy, when I get older I'm going to marry Elvis!" Yeah, that night she had a little talk with me and told me Elvis had "went to heaven" years before I was even born. I cried for days and didn't want to believe it... I kept saying "but I just saw him on TV!" Both my friend and I were devastated (she had just found out as well).
Looking back now I think "what an idiot" but back then we were two little girls with very broken hearts.

I just found out about Glenn Quinn a few months ago as well. For some reason I have a tough time watching Roseanne now... it bothers me a great deal seeing him and knowing that he passed away so young.

I remember being about 8 years old talking about how I wanna meet Lucy (Lucille Ball) one day, and my dad told me she was dead. I was shocked, I didn't know people like that died. In fact I was born only a few weeks before she actually died.

When my mother was in the hospital in 2001, her nurse was someone I had gone to high school with, and she dropped a few bombs on me. She told me that one of our classmates, a very popular girl, had died from breast cancer about five years before.

She also told me that our science teacher died of heart attack just two years after we graduated. He was only in his 40s. He was one of those teachers that everyone loved.

I was sooo very upset i still get a lump in my troat when i think of it because i wished i saw her before she died. :(

I saw that episode recently. It was a riot. He finally picked one of them for her pretty shoes, which she had borrowed from her sister.

I see in Merlin Santana's bio that he was a regular as one of Rudy's friends on The Cosby Show, supposedly Kenny's rival.

I remember in 1986-87, I became a huge fan of the show 'The Fugitive' when it was run on t.v. on one local channel. I couldn't believe it when one friend told me that its star, David Janssen, died of a heart attack at the age of 48 in 1980, just several years before. I later read that Janssen had a drinking problem and lived a sort of fast life. He apparently wasn't like his character, the good doctor, on the show, but he was still a great actor. He died at a relatively young age. :( You'd think that for playing a doctor on the show, he would have lightened up on booze and cigarettes....

Bernard Fox (Dr. Bombay) is also still alive. He and Erin Murphy (Tabitha) were present January 4th at the unveiling of Elizabeth Montgomery's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Erin's twin Diane, who doubled for her as Tabitha, is still around, as are David and Greg Lawrence, the twins who played baby Adam.

My only contribution is someone y'all probably don't know.

Long after it happened I learned that Roy Brocksmith, who played Kevin's high school English teacher Mr. Lemkur in Episode #73, "Frank and Denise", (remember him talking about poet John Keats?), passed away in December 2001.

It seems to me that one of the other non-regulars from TWY passed away in 2003. ISTR it being an older male, perhaps the father of one of the non-Kevin characters.

I remember an emotional Charlton Heston in an interview commenting on his role in the sci-fi Soylent Green and his co-star Edward G. Robinson.

From IMDb:
When Thorn discovers that he is too late to stop Sol's
suicide, he begins to cry. Charlton Heston was really crying he was
the only person on set who knew Edward G. Robinson was dying of
cancer. His death scene was the last day he worked in his life;
he died just nine days after shooting wrapped.

He had a hit in the 80's (actually a couple of hits) called ROCK ME AMADEUS. He was killed in a car accident. I read abt this almost ten years after it occurred. I was shocked.
actually, the 10th anniversary of his death is tomorrow. He also wrote Der Kommissar, which was a huge hit in the 80's for After The Fire.

OMG how friggin' spooky is that? I posted this today and you tell me his anniversary is tomorrow? :faint:

I had read abt his death over a year ago. I guess it must have been stuck in my head that it was almost ten years since he died, which is why I stated it was almost ten years ago. Damn!

I remember being about 8 years old talking about how I wanna meet Lucy (Lucille Ball) one day, and my dad told me she was dead. I was shocked, I didn't know people like that died. In fact I was born only a few weeks before she actually died.

same with me!
i was obsessed with lucy when i was growing up & in 4th grade i did a report on her. i remember reading a part in a book that said she was dead & my mom told me it was true. i couldn't believe it. and then i learned desi arnaz had also passed away and that was also a shock to me.

I remember the day Lucille Ball died. Their were reports that she was in the hospital but from all I heard it seemed like she was getting better and then the announcement just came. I had the radio on at the time. It was a real shock as I had grown up with Lucy. I remember CBS had a special celebrating her life and I didn't miss it.

Selma Diamond from Night Court comes to mind. I was about 4-5 when the show premiered and I remember watching it with my mom and seeing her on there. But then kindergarten started and NC was on past my bedtime so I didn't see it again for a few years, and by that time, Marsha Warfield was in her shoes, and I wondered why Selma had left, only to find out she was dead and that was why she left

and a year later Florence Halop who replaced Selma died of the same thing. It was a bad time for Night Court fans. :(

early 1985 was terrible for NBC as a whole, losing Selma Diamond, Dolph Sweet and Nicholas Colasanto one after the other and all three were on hit shows that were renewed for the next season. Of course, of the three, Dolph's death impacted Gimme A Break the worst since Cheers and Night Court were able to replace Coach and Selma, even if there are fans who never thought they could were truly replaced, whereas Dolph was a patriachal character that could never be replaced, like Ritter on 8SR

another 80's pop star death in the 90's that I didn't know until later was Jermaine Stewart. Best known for "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off" from 1986, he died of AIDS in 1997 (which I thought was really tragic irony since WDHTTOCO was an answer to the AIDS crisis).

Yep, me too. I heard abt it on one of those VH1 countdown shows. I think it had to do with One Hit Wonders.

I used to watch Dallas all the time. It was my favorite show. I didn't know of Timothy Patrick Murphy's death until a couple years ago. I found out on the internet. He died in 1988 at age 29 of Aids.

Yeah same here. I found out abt five years after he died.

The same thing with the actor who played Percival Dalton on Little House on the Prairie. I found out a few years after he died, that he passed away from AIDs due to unprotected sex (he was gay). Allison Arngrim, who played his wife Nellie on the show, is now a spokesperson of sorts for AIDs awareness and so forth.

I didn't know that Jermaine had died and another one I didn't find out about until several years later was Jimmy McShane AKA Baltimora who sang Tarzan Boy. He died of aids in 1995.

WHAT!!! JIMMY McSHANE IS DEAD?!?!?!

 :faint: :eek2:

I remember when "Tarzan Boy" got new life in 1993 when it was featured in a Listerine commercial. It also featured someone saying "Gingivitis!" in a deep voice.

I was surprised when I found out that Michael Hutchence was dead and Ricky Nelson.
