Hollywood actor has donated GBP1 million to the London hospital that saved his daughter's life.

The star was so grateful to the staff at Great Ormond Street children's hospital for treating eight-year-old Lily-Rose last year he felt compelled to write them a large cheque.

The youngster was admitted to the medical centre last November after contracting the life-threatening E.coli bacteria which caused her kidneys to fail.

Depp and his family were in London while he was filming Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street when Lily-Rose was taken ill and production had to be halted while the actor maintained a bedside vigil for his sick daughter.

Lily-Rose recovered and was discharged nine days later, and Depp has been quick to praise the staff at the hospital for all their efforts.

He says, "It was the most frightening thing we have ever been through. It was hell. But the magic was that she pulled through beautifully.

"Great Ormond Street was terrific, a great hospital."

To show his gratitude Depp offered a substantial donation and invited five doctors and nurses who cared for Lily-Rose to attend the party for Sweeney Todd last week.

Disney, who made Depp's Pirates of the Caribbean films, has also donated GBP10 million to Great Ormond Street to help fund redevelopment of the hospital site.

Lily-Rose is Depp's daughter by long-time girlfriend Vanessa Paradis. The couple also has a son, Jack, who is five.

That's so nice to hear! I remember hearing about his daughter being so ill and I'm happy to see she's made a full recovery.
Nice of Disney too!

Wonderful story with a happy ending. That story gave me anxiety while it was happening. I can only imagine what Johnny Depp and his partner went through. Class act, giving that money to the hospital. I hope they name a wing of the hospital after the family.

Meanwhile, get ready for a showdown with Dennis Quaid and another hospital over the near death of his twins. Sorry, that's for another thread, but I did read about today.

I also read that Johnny had his Capt. Jack costume shipped to London and he put it on and read to some of the kids at the hospital. Is he a great guy or what?

he could definitely teach the likes of tom cruise and those other hollywood a-listers a few lessons on giving something back to the community, instead of being egotistical, fame seekers.
