J.R. was scared to death of his daddy. Was Jock abusive to him when he was growing up? Did Jock give his kids whippings?

Penny Lane 02-05-2008, 04:14 PM People of his generation whipped/ spanked their kids. I know that my daddy did. But I don't consider that abusive. Now days I suppose it is. AB 02-05-2008, 05:28 PM ^ Well put! Ireneparalegal 02-05-2008, 05:36 PM No. He may have given the boys' whippings or a good spank now and then, but that was the way it used to be. Maybe if Jock had been more harsh, J.R. wouldn't have grown up to the be the conniving snake in the grass that he did. J.R. didn't fear his daddy. If he feared him, J.R. wouldn't have put up Southfork as collateral for that big Asian oil deal that nearly cost the family their home. Dr. Thong 02-19-2008, 10:33 AM I don't think Jock was physically abusive: He may have given a spanking (or a "whuppin" as it was called back then), but I think Jock was more psychologically abusive than anything else, as he pushed his boys to be macho and competitive. Look at how Jock disdained Gary, who he thought was a "mamas boy" because he was sensitive and not like J.R. or to a lesser extent, Bobby. I think Jock wanted his boys to be tough and competitive like he was. It was established he could be pretty ruthless when it came to business - look at the way he fell out with Digger Barnes. Ireneparalegal 03-30-2008, 08:57 PM Jock's saying to J.R. was "Booze, Broads and Booty"...mind you Booty as in money, not butt. Dr. Thong 03-31-2008, 07:31 PM Jock's saying to J.R. was "Booze, Broads and Booty"...mind you Booty as in money, not butt. Either way, it works for me, Irene.:D Mr. Television 03-31-2008, 07:50 PM Jock's saying to J.R. was "Booze, Broads and Booty"...mind you Booty as in money, not butt. When I first saw that episode I thought it meant butt. Ireneparalegal 03-31-2008, 09:43 PM Either way, it works for me, Irene.:D I thought it would. ;) Ireneparalegal 03-31-2008, 09:45 PM When I first saw that episode I thought it meant butt. I did too. That is until one day I was watching a pirate movie and the word "booty" was mentioned. I was shocked. I was like, "What the heck?" I learned quick that it did not mean BUTT. My son watches Spongebob and the Mr. Krabs character has said it a few times. My son starts laughing because he thinks he is talking abt butt too. Furienna 05-21-2008, 07:55 PM J.R. didn't fear his daddy. Ireneparalegal 05-30-2008, 05:54 PM Maybe JR didn't fear Jock, but he sure had respect for him, the same respect that he had for his mama, Miss Ellie. He respected them alright. He almost respected them out of their home. |
