She was in the first season (and maybe the second, I can't remember offhand), but she was always in their apartment when Bob came home and you could tell he didn't like her being there AND that he didn't like her. I thought it was odd that the subject never came up between him and Emily. And then she was gone.

I guess the powers that be felt the character didn't fit in with the others, and I have to agree (no offense to the actress). Margaret is probably on the Island of Mistfit TV Characters along with Chuck Cunningham, Judy Winslow, Carl Dixon, and that girl from 227.

I think Margaret lasted through the first 18 episodes or so - a breeze in, breeze out character - similar to Howard, but Howard was so spacey, he caught on with the audience better.

Maybe Bob didn't like the fact that Margaret was a stay-at-home mom?

I recently watched Season 1 again, and Margaret disappeared about halfway through the season. I never could figure out why Bob didn't like her.

I never could either. I would have thought Bob would have mentioned it to Emily at some point.

Or Emily could've asked Bob what his problem was.

I suspect that she was the stereotypical "wacky neighbor" that used to be present in so many domestic sitcoms. All in the Family had a similar female character, whose name I can't remember, who was a sort of friend to Edith and irritant to Archie, but she didn't last long on that show.

I do not remember Margaret on The Bob Newhart Show.
