View Full Version : Piercing advice
Number 9 Dream 01-13-2008, 07:51 PM Ok, so I'm thinking about getting a piercing. I'm just in the mood to do something fun and different for myself and I've always wanted to get one.
Thing is, I have no idea where to get it  I'm seriously considering my tongue, but everyone in my family keeps telling me how painful it is and how awful it would look.
So, I am still contemplating things....what I'd like to know (if you're pierced or even if you've heard from other relatives/friends who've gotten pierced) is what part of the body is least painful to pierce and which would look best on me (including a pic for reference...I'm on the left).
Feel free to share any of your experiences with piercing! Thank you! :)
TripperFan 01-13-2008, 07:54 PM OMG - PLEASE do not do your tongue unless you're considering a career in the Porn industry.
Number 9 Dream 01-13-2008, 07:56 PM  I'm not....do you think they look horrible or something?

OMG yeah! lol I think I'm pretty liberal - I mean, heck, I was pretty "racey" for my day in my school - got that second hole in the ear when it first became popular (had to do it myself with a mattress needle and ice). Had the blond at the front of the hair and all that. But when they came out with the tongue and genital piercing - sorry - that's too much for this kid. I'd kill my kid if they ever did it. It's just now too, it's associated with "skankiness". Sorry if I offend anyone reading that is pierced (I know a couple here are), but it just isn't attractive to me. Besides, it's like thongs - the things would just drive me nuts!! And that's what makes me uncomfortable talking to someone with them - I concentrate more on it than I do on the person or what they have to say. I also hate the ring in the eyebrow. I keep thinking someone's going to tug on it and rip it out.
I do think naval piercings can be nice. Some of the jewelry is quite pretty. And it's not always obvious. If I ever were to get a piercing, it would be my belly button. It's just women my age shouldn't be doing that anyway. Ick! (I'll stick to my little star tattoo on my baby toe thanks!)
Number 9 Dream 01-13-2008, 08:05 PM  Yeah, I guess my reasoning for wanting to get it done is that it doesn't seem like an "in your face" type piercing (which an eyebrow piercing is to me, which is probably why I'm not jumping to get that done), but everyone I talk to is telling me how distracting it is. I also don't want my tongue to swell up to mammoth proportions, and some of the stories I'm hearing about post tongue piercing swelling is scaring the crap out of me!
So far, my family likes the idea of me getting a small diamond stud in my nose. That seems to be winning out with them
Belly button piercings can look good on the right person, but unfortunately mine would just disappear in a mound of fat for all eternity.

I didn't get to get my nose done yesterday, but I am going to get it done this week.
As for a belly button ring, I plan to get one when I find my belly button. ;)

Ooo, please post pics when you do get it done :) I'd love to see how it comes out!

LOL - (you're bad - the disappearing belly button - I hear ya on that one - with me it's loose skin. hehe)
Yeah, I don't mind a very small diamond at the nose now. I did when they first became popular. LOL - I remember "grilling" a coworker who got one that if she took it out on a windy day, did her nose whistle? Or if she blew her nose when it wasn't in, did she have to "make sure" she covered the hole? I think it would also drive me a little nuts with something on the inside of my nostril, but hey -if you can handle it, your family doesn't mind, go for it.
And yeah, there ARE horror stories about tongue piercing - it really is very dangerous. (And I wince just thinking of the pain of that - I'd rather pass a frozen turkey through my butt than do that I think)!
Number 9 Dream 01-13-2008, 08:24 PM  @ the frozen turkey comment...oh my!
Yeah, I don't think I could deal with something up my nostril either...wow, we're eliminating a lot of choices here...this is good! :clap
What do you think about the labret? :)

At the risk of sounding dumb, what's the labret? - between the bottom lip and the chin? (pluuese tell me it's above the belly button......) lol
Number 9 Dream 01-13-2008, 08:40 PM The labret is exactly that, yup :)
TripperFan 01-13-2008, 08:47 PM The labret is exactly that, yup :)
Still pretty distracting and everyone just seems to wear the same big silver ball. I watch it go up and down when they talk. ick.
Aren't there things you can get where it just sticks to the skin and you don't need to be pierced at all? Or I think I've heard of something that's magnetic and the flat part sits inside the nose (although that would probably still bother me, it would at least allow you to test it out first).
And always keep in mind that once that hole has been open for several years, it probably won't close. Picture yourself in your 60s and up of what you'll look like. That's why my tatoo is on my toe - it can't sag there and if I need to cover it! ;)
Also, think of what career you're going into - mine was so straight laced, that I had to watch how I coloured my hair even for many years.
Number 9 Dream 01-13-2008, 08:50 PM Hmm, very true...there are loads of things I need to consider. Decisions, decisions!
I want to go into the field of editing (and also freelance write on the side) :)
MonarC 01-13-2008, 08:57 PM Well I don't have any piercing but I know people who do. A few of my friends have tounge piercings. They say at first they couldn't eat anything for a few days. Then one of my friends choked on hers when it came off in her mouth when she was asleep. If you get one of those on your eyebrow it will leave an ugly scar if you ever decide to take it out for good. I would suggest not to get one but that is your choice to make. :)
PZelda 01-13-2008, 09:40 PM My sis has a labret piercing, but it's off to the right side. She has a very small diamond stud for it - very pretty and totally NOT distracting at all.
I have a bunch of piercings - all in my ears, though. I haven't ventured anywhere outside my ears. Yet. I have six total piercings from both ears.

I'd definitely go with the nose piercing if I were you - tongue piercings just seem to be more of a hassle in the long run, than good. The balls on the barbell can ruin the enamel on your teeth, and they can affect your speech.
Number 9 Dream 01-13-2008, 10:00 PM I really like your piercings, Allison :) Did the upper ear hurt? (I forgot the technical name for that!)
p.s. Thanks to everyone who has given me input! You rock! :D :woohoo:
junecleaver 01-14-2008, 03:35 AM I strongly do not recommend the tongue ring. It is very dangerous, from choking on the ring to getting a severe infection. My brother got his tongue peirced and a few days later he was in the ER. Your tongue is an organ, and organs do not need holes in them. I think you'd look good with a little diamond nose ring, nothing big, because less is more. Anything else outside of your ears and nose would be overkill IMO

Totally agree.
(No offense Allison) ;)

Which one? The one with the barbell is an industrial, and the one with just a regular earring in it is called a helix.
The helix didn't hurt at all, from what I remember. It's my second-oldest piercing, I've had it since 2000. I actually had two helix piercings in both ears at one point - but damn. I shouldn't have... it led to some serious swelling, and I had to take them out before they got any worse. (don't get anything other than your lobes done with a piercing gun! BAD IDEA!)
The industrial... yeah, it hurt quite a bit. I already had an existing helix piercing where the barbell is supposed to go through, so the piercer only had to make one new hole for it. Ohhhh man. My mom was with me when I got it done, and she was chatting with my piercer about epidurals and pregnancy while the guy was piercing me and shoving the barbell through my ear. (thank you, mom.)
TripperFan 01-20-2008, 10:39 PM LOL - just was emailed a list of new "rule" for 2008 by George Carlin. Here's one of them:
New Rule: If you ever hope to be a credible adult and want a job that pays better than Minimum wage, then for God's sake don't pierce or tattoo every available piece of flesh. If so, then plan your future around saying, 'Do you want fries with that?'
junecleaver 01-21-2008, 01:25 AM  Thats true. Piercings are fine (not the gaping hole kind) because you can just remove the earrings for work. But tatoos are a whole different story. I'm all for people who may like tatoos on their lower back, ankle, etc...in other words places that can be hidden. But on arms, hands, or face? Do people ever think about how those tatoos will look when they get pregnant, gain a lot of weight, or age? I'd hate to be 80 years old and have a sagging wilted looking rose on my arm.
TripperFan 01-21-2008, 10:54 AM And there's no classier look than a woman in an evening gown or better yet, wedding gown with a big blue tiger or skull showing on the shoulder. ;)
PZelda 01-21-2008, 01:10 PM Hahahahahah.
I have a small tattoo on my upper left arm. I always forget I have it, because it's covered 99% of the time. Only time I really look at it is when I'm in the shower and have no choice but to, well, look at it. And it's not a picture tattoo... :p
Plus, I hope to have 'gaping hole' piercings in my earlobes eventually... you're thinking of stretched holes. ;) But I'll wear solid jewelry in it, because it's pretty easy to fool people into thinking they're just regular earrings. :D
SEE?! I thought it all out.
