WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Alexander Ovechkin signed one of the richest deals in NHL history on Thursday when the All-Star winger inked a 13-year contract extension with the Washington Capitals worth a reported $124 million.
The contract, which will keep Ovechkin in a Capitals uniform through the 2020-21 season, is also one of the longest in NHL history second only to the 15-year, $67.5 million deal signed by New York Islanders netminder Rick DiPietro in 2006.
"You still have to play hockey," Ovechkin told reporters.
Hockey is my life and money is money. I want to stay here, I don't like to change the atmosphere.
"I like the fans, I like living in Washington. I just love it."
According to reports, Ovechkin will be paid $9 million over the first six seasons of the deal and $10 million over the last seven.
"My bet is the money won't affect him, he'll play every shift like it's the seventh game of the finals of the Stanley Cup," said Capitals owner Ted Leonsis. "It's what we've come to love about him."
The number one pick in the 2004 draft, the charismatic Ovechkin quickly established himself as a fan favorite and one of the league's most feared attackers.
The 22-year-old Russian has 130 goals and 250 points in 206 career games.
Ovechkin has led the Capitals in points and goals in each of his three seasons, claiming the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie in 2006 after a dazzling debut campaign that saw him score 52 goals.
This season Ovechkin continues to lead the Capitals with 32 goals and 52 points. The deal should keep him in Washington for most, if not all of his playing career.
