I've watched parts of it and it is amazing how strikingly different this is from both The Family sketches and the followup "Mama's Family" spinoff. Carol really makes Eunice into a sympathethic three dimensional person in this and Ken Berry is very effective as Phillip. Too bad some of this didn't translate over to MF--where the comedy sometimes was too broad for its own good.

I loved it. I felt so bad for Eunice. Darn that Aunt Ina!

Aunt Ina of Aunt Ina's Chicken Casserole fame!

Funny no one has decided to do a Mama's Family Cookbook--that would be a hoot!!

What was this supposed to be? A continuance of mama's family? I've never heard of this.

No, it was 90 minute special aired on CBS, post Carol Burnett Show, around 1980 or early 81. it offers one conclusion to The Family story. Very high ratings prompt NBC to snatch up the Mama saga, albeit different from The Family from Carol and even from the Eunice special.

very different, in some parts, before it was gray, Mama's hair is brown (Eunice special)
in the show, whenever they show her younger, it's red.
i only watched the first 3 parts, but i loved every second of it. will watch more when i have time.

March 15, 1982 (the Ides of March). It placed in the Top 10 for that week's airings, and is what convinced Vicki to do "Mama" as a series, along with prodding from Carol and Harvey---hence, "Mama's Family" came along.

You can also maybe buy it a "homemade" DVD copy at ioffer.com. Just do a search and sometimes a couple of folks who sell it there have some copies up.
