View Full Version : Paramount has made a lot of announcements today
Robert 13 01-08-2008, 12:57 PM I'm surprised there aren't more messages posted about them yet. Laverne & Shirley: Season 4 is coming in April. And, even though I'm not a fan, Cheers is coming back which I'm sure many are happy about. Now, if they would only announce the first season of The Lucy Show.

YES! Can't wait for more Cheers and Laverne and Shirley! I was SO surprised to see these announcements today and it's great that we'll be getting more of these shows very soon!
JulieSomoski 01-08-2008, 05:54 PM I was shocked to hear all the titles CBS?Paramount are already planning for 2008. Probably the best company around when it comes to releasing shows at a great rate . . . and not abandoning them, either, like other big companies.
Pavan 01-08-2008, 05:56 PM But CBS' DVDs are cheap in quality. Edited episodes, music replacements, and no special features. Very pathetic.

That's why I didn't say it was the best company for releasing DVD's . . . I said they were the best for releasing them at a great rate without abandoning them. But yeah, they are definitely the cheapest company around when it comes to quality, and at the same time the most expensive (I can't believe I pay $35 for every one of those cheap cases-LOL). If only they could make more sets like they did I Love Lucy - now those were 6 of the best sets I've ever owned, and from the same company that is known for their cheap plastic Amaray sets.
gotsmart 01-08-2008, 06:43 PM Yeah, I agree about the cases. At first I liked the clear Amary cases but now I am so sick of them. Also, CBS/Paramount is taking the cheap route by only releasing half seasons of hour-long shows with only about 3 or 4 exceptions. They have announced today that they are releasing the entire first season of Matlock (which was an hour-long show). Also today they have announced a 50th anniversary edition of Perry Mason.
BTW, when do you think we'll see more Happy Days and Mork & Mindy? May?
Wow, I like the Amaray-style cases. More than the Slim Cases...no particular reason, just like the packaging style more.
A lot of sets don't have special features. I don't think a lot of Sony's (or Universal) do, either. It's pretty common these days....the smaller companies seem to put more effort in to Extras.
Eric Paddon 01-09-2008, 03:46 AM I think Paramount is the best studio for releasing classic TV on DVD bar none at this point. But even the best can goof, and they did goof up with one of their releases today.
Season 2 Volume 1 of "Gunsmoke" has a wrong episode in the set. There is supposed to be an episode called "How To Cure A Friend". Instead, while the episode title is correct on the insert, the episode that comes up instead is a Season 4 episode called "How To Kill A Friend."
To add to the general confusion, the correct episode guest starred actor Andrew Duggan, while the wrong episode included centers on a *character* named Duggan. And both episodes aired in November, two years apart. Even with those coincidences, there's still no excuse for the foul-up.
I suspect that to save money, Paramount will just put the correct episode on the back end of Volume 2 whenever that comes out. Paramount I think never likes to leave a season interrupted in midstream, unlike Fox which left "The Big Valley" interrupted in Season 2.

You have to admit though-- their co-release with Paramount of "Hawaii Five-O" S1 (1968-69) was, in my opinion, one of the best ever, at least as far as episode lengths, video quality, and music were concerned. The episodes were of uniform length, there was excellent picture quality, and all the music was intact. They even had that documentary with Emme Tomimbang and James MacArthur.
S2 (1969-70), OTOH, was a slightly different story. Even though one episode was gone ("Bored, She Hung Herself"), several others came a little short of 51 minutes, and the last episode ("Kiss The Queen Goodbye") oddly had the S1 opening and closing music, both the Jack Lord episode promos (on most episodes save for "To Hell With Babe Ruth" and "3 Dead Cows at Makapuu") and the excellent visual and audio quality made up for those shortcomings, IMHO. Hopefully, with the soon-coming release of S3 (1970-71), the episode promos will be at the ends of the preceding episodes, and not at the beginnings of the episodes that they promote.

I like the Amaray-style cases better too. The slim cases may visually be nice but I've seen how some of them cause that cloudy thing to happen to the dvd. So I'd rather have the Amaray-style ones and keep the discs in good working condition.
I also don't think the dvds that Paramount has been releasing have been so bad in terms of quality. Sure the edits are annoying but they look pretty sharp to me. Hey, you can watch it on tv or watch it commercial-free on dvd. I'd rather watch the whole show from start to finish uninterrupted. I'm not too picky about the music replacements and edits.
JulieSomoski 01-09-2008, 05:16 PM Slim cases are definitely the best packaging style - it easily keeps the discs in place, and when you get slimcases, you can pretty much assure episode escriptions and nice overall packaging. With these Amaray sets, the episode descriptions are underneath the discs, which I HATE!!!
And am I the only one who likes digipacks here? I always liked digipack sets, basically because you only have to open up 1 case for all the discs. Sony's digipacks are the best, because they don't have the overlapping discs.

I like digipacks too. There is room for really cool art and it looks very nice. I know some people dislike them because they have to keep flipping it to get to the discs but I don't mind as long as the discs don't overlap.

I like digipacks best too. It's my preferred way to see dvd-sets released.

Yeah. All the discs are ony place. All you have to do is keeping flipping the set, but what's wrong with that? I don't see why we don't see many digipacks for new releases anymore.
