Some Frasier episodes were ok, but when they hooked up Daphne with Niles I couldn't keep watching, that was just ridiculous. plus, characters like Roz and bulldog ad meredes ruhl were just lame. also, frasier became hateable during that show. he was somewhat likeable when lilith put him in his place but their plutonic relationship on Frasier was just sad.

moreover, when i see frase on cheers reruns, i cant believe that he'd go on to lead his own tv show for as long as cheers was on the air. thats nuts. frasier crane was on tv more than sam malone or archie bunker.

I like both shows!

I love both shows but to me, they're practically night and day so I don't like to compare them, even if one is a spinoff of the other. I believe there are probably more Cheers fans who like Frasier than not, but there's never a guarantee that liking a show will cause you to like the spinoff. In some cases, people like the spinoff but not the parent show.

I also liked Frasier up until Daphne and Niles got together. It wasn't just their romance that made me lose interest, but the show just lost its punch with all the characters (it had been on 7 years by that point).

Frasier was high-brow, but still stuck to usual sitcom tactics for laughs (embarrassing Frasier, his lousy love life, brother and dad drove him nuts). But even for a more sophisticated show, still made me laugh. Though I preferred Cheers frat-house approach more.

I can see why you don't think the characters on Frasier were as appealing but I've always found them very likeable myself. I agree that the show had intelligent scripts, particularly in its early years. Of course, the quality dropped later on, but that happens with most long-running shows. I also liked that the show wasn't afraid to be silly from time-to-time.

Damien, I'm curious, why is it that you feel Roz was a lame character? I've always liked her.

I'm also a fan of both shows, but each show had their times when they weren't laugh-out-loud funny and became a little "average" on the sitcom scale of funniness. Some episodes of FRASIER practically made me wet myself, while others didn't even get a chuckle out of me. Same story with Cheers. Every show has its standout moments--- whether they be good or bad. But back to the original question, it is possible to only be a fan of CHEERS, or to only be a fan of FRASIER. Some of my family members are some of those people.

Frasier is that show that I have to suffer watching while waiting for the Golden Girls to start on the Lifetime Channel.

I thought Frasier was a great spin-off. The cameos, though rare, of old Cheers characters was particularly interesting. But in the end, I found Cheers to be the most enjoyable of the two.

I'm a huge fan of cheers, but to me frasier is only an ok show. I've watched about half the episodes, and in many of those eps I didn't laugh at all.

A funny thing - I just asked my wife this the other day. I watched Cheers from either the 1st or 2nd episode, religiously, every week along with my mother beginning in 1982, age 11. We loved it, just as we had loved its sister show, Taxi. Cheers was almost a riff on Taxi, with the important addition of the Sam/Diane dynamic - an attempt at an opposites-attract relationship done comedically, but in a sophisticated manner.

My mom lost interest when Diane left, when Cheers became exclusively a bar show. She felt the show had lost an important voice and dynamic. But I was such a fan that I kept watching, at least for the first few of the "Rebecca years". But it became a praftfall / frathouse hijinks kind of show. Unfortunately. And when I watch reruns of the later years now, I'm struck by how much a background character Sam was; it was an ensemble show with no clear leads. In retrospect, my mom was right - the balloon deflated - quite noticeably - after Diane left.

But when Frasier came on, it had a spark to it, much like Cheers in its early years. It reignited the snob/blue collar debate in a different setting, pitting Frasier and Niles against their cop dad, enabling the writers to explore the same thing Cheers had with Sam and Diane. (And I just realized - this is probably why my mom loves Frasier moreso than Cheers, and still watches it.)

And while the Frasier scripts were often sharp early on, by modern standards they're a bit dated. Same as Cheers, really. Seinfeld revolutionized comedy scripting, and did away with traditional sitcom conventions - such as the immediate setup / punchline, the cliched plots based around misunderstandings, deceipt and "You're right, I need to tell so-and-so the truth". And the tempo - post-Seinfeld, comedy just happens a lot faster. So Cheers/Frasier feel kinda...slow, by modern standards.

In summary, early Cheers blows away pretty much everything else Cheers-related. And Frasier, in its early years, blows away post-Diane Cheers without a doubt. I haven't watched much Frasier beyond the mid-90s...so for me the question is: Later Cheers, or later Frasier?

I love both shows. Writer David Lloyd wrote on both shows and watch any episode penned by him on both series. I think those episodes are great. He wrote an "Old Fashioned Wedding" on Cheers and "The Innkeepers" on Frasier, both are fast-paced episodes. I think Frasier in the later years analyzed and read way too much into some things, but I get past it and just enjoy the show.

I agree that Cheers and Frasier are two entirely different shows. Perhaps that is a big part (along with the smart writing, of course) of why it was successful and had a great run.

BTW- Kirstie never visited, but I remember Sam mentioning Rebecca in his guest appearance, commenting on how the plumber from the Cheers finale came into a fortune, and promptly left her.

I got into Frasier because he was great on Cheers and I actually ended up liking Frasier more than Cheers. It is now my favorite show ever! I love it.

I could never get into Cheers-still can't. I never thought I'd love Frasier as much as I do because of not liking Cheers, but I think it's a much better show! The characters are so much more pleasant to watch. A lot of the Cheers regulars I could not stand. Always hated Lilith on Cheers, but I love her on Frasier!

They are very different, though both excellent at what they do.

Cheers goes down a lot smoother, where I find I have to be in the mood for Frasier since there seems to be a lot more issues of anger and disgruntledness (is that even a word?).

The Frasier in 'Frasier' would never be caught in a bar drinking beer, yet he did it every episode in Cheers. But without the changes to the stuck-up character it would not have been funny.

Cheers will always be one of my all time favorite shows, but I never watched one minute of Frasier. Was nothing against the show but I was just never compelled to watch it, even in reruns.
