Tom Hanks has ruled out the possibility of starring in any more romantic comedies.

The actor, who starred with Meg Ryan in Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail, said he would not consider playing a similar role because he disapproves of the direction the genre has taken.

He said: "Most romantic comedies now are pretty much about teenagers getting laid, so I'm not going to do that."

The 51-year-old also revealed that he hopes to receive an Oscar nomination for his role in Charlie Wilson's War because he is desperate to win a third Academy Award.

He said: "If I'm 90 and haven't scored another one, I will truly view the latter part of my career as some kind of failure."

Hanks has been nominated for Best Actor three times in addition to winning for Philadelphia in 1993 and Forrest Gump the following year.

The nominations for this year's Oscars are announced on January 22.

well Sleepless In Seattle was a good movie I think anyway I liked it but It's his choice i mean he's been in a lot of movies.

Based on all of the previews I've seen for Charlie Wilson's War, Hanks should at least get a nomination. It wouldn't surprise me if he didn't get one, however. He never even got a nomination for his perfomance in Road to Perdition and IMO, that was one of his best roles ever. :crazy:

I wish Tom would go back and do movies that are fun, instead of just bids at winning awards. It was Splash, Big, Bosom Buddies and the sort that made people love him in the first place, but all he does are Oscar-worthy dramas. I mean, he is good at drama, but why not throw in a fun comedy in between as well? Jim Carrey does a good job with this, he'll do serious movies like Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and The Truman Show, but in between gives us Liar Liar and Bruce Almighty as well.

my sentiments exactly. Tom has proven himself a respected actor, doing a comedy every two or three years isn't going to damage his reputation. I mean, he did That Thing You Do and You've Got Mail after winning back to back Oscars and people still loved him and took him seriously.

John, you put it beautifully. That is exactly what I mean. What more does he have to prove with all those dark, dramatic films? He already has 2 Oscars, plus a slew of other various nominations. He should start doing some lighter, FUN movies again!!! He was one of the producers (along with wife Rita Wilson) on My Big Fat Greek Wedding - why can't he star in something like that again??

I agree with him about romantic comedies, but he seems a bit into himself with the whole Oscar thing. :lol: It reminds me of Bette Davis. As of right now, I see Daniel Day Lewis taking the Oscar this year.

He was in The Ladykillers a couple of years ago so it's not like he's totally given up on comedy but yeah, it would be nice if he did some more. Most of my favorite Tom Hanks films are comedies he made before he got really big like Bachelor Party, Big and Splash.

that's the tom hanks i love- doing comedy films, as opposed to serious dramas. although i wasn't a fan of sleepless in seattle or you've got mail in the slightest

Yay for movies like Forrest Gump! :D I miss him being funny. :(

I'm not convinced this article is even accurate. Who did Hanks say this to? Did he call this Digital Spy cyber-rag and tell them he was desperate for another Oscar? lol. That's not Tom Hank's style at all. He's too humble to make those statements.

I also think Tom has been fantastic in choosing his movie roles, with only a few missteps along the way. I don't know if Forrest Gump was billed as a comedy, but it sure seemed like a drama to me.
