View Full Version : When You're Sick How Long Is It Before It's Gone?
Family Ties Forever! 01-04-2008, 02:24 AM When you have a cold how long does it take you before you are better?
I have a cold that seems to be holding on. I've been sick since last week. I started feeling sick on the 26th. I wish my cold would go away. Hopefully it will soon. I'm going to the doctor today (Friday) because I'm still sick. I've heard different people are sick. Something is going around. My sister was sick first.
phoebe7165 01-04-2008, 02:48 AM I heard somewhere that it takes 3 days for a cold virus to get into your body, then you have it completely for 3 days, then 3 days to get out of your body.
I felt like I was coming down with a cold on New Year's Day, felt like crap yesterday, now it's almost gone. Weird.
Max Whittaker 01-04-2008, 03:22 AM At the first signs of a cold I take immune boosters. It only lasts on average three days.
If I don't treat it preemptively, it can linger well into a week.
Janice 01-04-2008, 04:17 AM Fortunately, I'm not prone to colds. Your cold has overstayed its visit, for sure. I'm glad you're seeing your doctor. He'll probably give you something for it. Orange juice, tea, chicken soup and aspirin - that's what I give my husband when he has a cold, and Nyquil, of course, lol.
Good luck at the doctors, Jenny. Let us know how you make out. I hope you're feeling better soon. :)

Isn't that strange? I'm not either...I don't even get a cold once a year. I am very lucky, I am not prone to very much at all...I don't get the flu either, even without flu shots. I don't even get poison ivy when exposed to it. I always thought it was because my parents raised us as vegetarians and on all organic food. Thought maybe that gave me a good strong immune system. ???? We also did a lot of backpacking and was exposed to poison ivy all the time so I think we developed an immunity to it. Freaky, huh...:D
Anyway, hope you feel better.

Yes, you are lucky!! I get a couple colds a year and don't feel like doing anything. The cold I started getting on New Year's Day, I thought I was rid of it but I woke up this morning and it came back.

I got a flu shot about 8 years ago and I was sick for 2 weeks after that. I haven't had a flu shot since and luckily I haven't gotten the flu, either.

I've heard that the more you're exposed to it, the less immune you are.
Sounds like you are simply blessed with one powerful immune system, all around!
Use it wisely! ;)
PZelda 01-04-2008, 06:17 PM I was diagnosed with mono nearly 1 1/2 years ago, in September of 2006 (happy late 21st birthday, Allison. Here's a present for you!). I guess having mono did something to my immune system... for most of the month of December, I was battling this weird pseudo-cold. I had all the symptoms, but it'd come and go. A lot of the time, I felt like crap. Finally, somewhere around the 28th, the cold started showing itself. Oh, it bit with a vengance! But this was no cold... I had a mono relapse on top of that. :( Once you've had mono, it stays in your system forever. So you can still get relapses down the road and you will always be a carrier. It stays dormant in your system except for when you're having a relapse... one of the biggest reasons why I don't share drinking glasses or utensils with any other people. Unless it was a guy I really liked... ;) Yeah, anyhoo. I'm finally feeling better today. I still sound horribly congested but I'm good as any to return to work now. Woo!
Ireneparalegal 01-04-2008, 06:52 PM I hope you feel 100 percent better real soon.
My daughter has had a bad stomach ache for 8 days now. Her doctor appt. isn't until Tuesday. She can barely eat but she won't stay home from work. I think it was something she must have eaten OR it could be a virus because yesterday her boyfriend woke up feeling the same way.
catlover79 01-04-2008, 07:11 PM It takes me a while to shake off colds and flus. I've been battling sore throat/congestion for over 2 weeks now. I've been to the doctor, I'm using humidifiers both at home and the office, and I'm trying to drink more fluids. I should probably start taking those one-a-day vitamins as well.
My son had a bad cold during Christmas, runny nose, sneezing, slight fever and a little cough. It took him 9 or 10 days before he started feeling better and thats with the help of about $25 worth of cold medicine. Those colds can be hard to shake sometimes.
Nighthawk76 01-05-2008, 12:29 AM Thanks.
I went to the doctor and I have a sinus infection. :( I have a terrible cough. It's the worst when I try to sleep/rest. I have been taking medicine and cough drops, but that doesn't seem to be helping much. The doctor did write for some medicine. I am waiting for my doctor's office to call it into the pharmacy. Then I will wait for the pharmacy to fill it. I'm going to ask my mother if she can pick it up after work for me. I really hope the medicine will help. All my symptoms, runny nose, congestion, cough, etc. are lingering. :(
I hope that you feel better, Jenny. :bighug:
TVFactFan 01-05-2008, 01:55 AM Reading this thread is the reason I want to SLAP the sh*t out of someone who wants me to get excited about a 63 degree day in January. It means nothing but a POSSIBLE COLD which I have

I know! Several years ago in Ohio we had a weird winter - it was in the 60s one week, the 20s the next week, and the 50s the week after that. People were getting sick left and right. When it's winter, I just want the temperature to stay cold so the germs are dormant!!
friendsfan77 01-06-2008, 01:33 AM I hate having a cold so much. I hated it when my voice was gone, and I really hate coughing so much and blowing my nose all the time. I can't laugh anymore. I can't wait for it to be gone already.
Number 9 Dream 01-06-2008, 02:06 AM It takes me about 3-5 days to fully recover from a cold. I had one for two weeks once--that wasn't fun.
I actually just came down with a cold last night...been downing chicken soup, tea, and orange juice ever since! :X)

that's what this winter has been like here in NY. it's INSANE. my mom and my dad both have colds right now and i kind of feel like im getting a little bit sick too.
for me, colds always start off as a scratchy throat that lasts for like 2 days, then it turns into the full-fledged coughing/sneezing/sore throat/runny nose-fest that lasts 2 days, then i get a cough at the end that can last for weeks sometimes. colds are annoying -_-
friendsfan77 01-06-2008, 05:56 PM And it's warming up here this week to the mid 60s after we just had days where it didnt get out of the 20s or upper 30s, and before the cold snap a week or two ago it was in the low 70s. I hate bi-polar weather.
Nighthawk76 01-06-2008, 07:18 PM Aw, thanks, Mike! I hope you feel better as well!

So do I, and it looks like it's going to be like that this next week in Ohio.
Stormtracker TF 01-07-2008, 07:16 AM I'm not overly prone to getting sick, but when I do it nags and nags until it's been around for at least a week on average. I hate it. :(
Stormtracker TF 01-07-2008, 07:17 AM Since I'll find any good reason to talk about the weather, we've gotten some rollercoaster type weather here. Warm, big snowstorm, warm, repeat. Right now we've already set the record high for the day at 57°F.
friendsfan77 01-07-2008, 05:48 PM So do I, and it looks like it's going to be like that this next week in Ohio.
Here we'll have a warmer week with 60s and near 70 degree days this week, then they're saying that we'll have another cold snap with highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s. ohno:
Dean Winchester 01-08-2008, 02:11 AM out of curiosity, how big are your tonsils? I have been told by doctors that my tonsils are enormous for my age, and that it's a big fact why every winter, I generally have a cold that lasts until spring comes. Last winter I had an exceptionally bad case of bronchitis
friendsfan77 01-08-2008, 02:17 AM ^ Wow, that has to suck. Luckilly I had mine taken out when I was a kid.
LuLu Rogers 01-08-2008, 06:26 AM I'm sick now. :( :X)
Nighthawk76 01-09-2008, 01:26 AM My tonsils kept getting infected in 2002 so I had to have them taken out in December 2002. Before my tonsils were taken out I used to get sick more often than I do now. Apparently my tonsils were so bad that the doctor who removed them let other doctors see them. I think that's weird, but some doctor I guess enjoy seeing things like that. I guess it must fascinate them?
Yeah, from my two months working in the hospital, I learned that doctors and nurses are amused my some really strange things.
Nighthawk76 01-09-2008, 01:26 AM I'm sick now. :( :X)
Feel better, Lauren
Dude111 02-13-2026, 10:06 PM I havent been feeling good since this last weekend... (About 7 days now)
