On PBS last night they had a show about the Pioneers of Televisions and they interviewed Barbara Eden about her guest spot on the show. She said spent alot of time hiding from Desi. When she saw him coming she would hid.
I wasn't sure how to take that. Did he hit on the guest stars or was she just aware of his reputation so she stayed away from him?

I am sure Desi had a roving eye for Barbara. She was one hell of a gorgeous young thing when she appeared on ILL. She still is hot. I wouldn't blame her for hiding from Desi. He probably tried to flirt with her. I always wondered if Desi had his eye on her during that episode, thanx to you, you answered my question. ;)

Remember that scene in Lucy's Last Birthday, at the club where they're all gathered for her, and this blonde floozie type is there, i assumed she got cast by Desi, LOL! I knew about the ladies on the set, he was a producer after all, and they all did that back then, some still do today, LOL! But what shocked me was that Barbara told the story of Lucy helping her and sewing sparkles on her dress and all, i guess she wanted to keep an eye on her and keep her away from Desi, LOL! Barabara said it was because she was young and starting out and Lucy was very kind to newcomers.

I wondered about that myself.

I didn't see this documentary, but I'm surprised that it showed Barbara making that statement without an explanation of what she meant by it. A lot of us ILL fans who are familiar with Desi's reputation as a skirt-chaser would understand, but the average Joe might not.

One internet bio of Deborah Walley of "The Mothers-in-Law" said that she "reportedly spending much of her free time fending off the advances of producer Desi Arnaz" during the filming of the series. So there was definitely a pattern...

There are two other ILL episodes where I wondered if there was something more than meets the eye.

The first one is where Lucy is on that diet. The scene where Lucy pretends to not know Ricky and she auditions for the dancing lead. That blonde floozie with those large legs and thighs, seemed to be something that Desi would go for. She is the one who told Lucy in that mean way, "I've known Ricky Ricardo for a long time. You're not his type." I always wondered when the ladies were auditioned for that episode, if some of those floozies allowed a little "flirtation" to occur from Desi just to be on the show.

The second one is the lucious blonde we all talked abt before, the actress' name was Joy (forgot her last name) and she was in the Florida episode abt the boys' judging a beauty contest.

I wished I would have seen it, I'll have to look up the PBS schedule and see when the next airing will be.

I have two PBS stations here and only one showed it, so i guess they'll be putting the show in anywhere they need to over the next few months, i'm sure it will be on a lot as it was very good. Lots of insights here and there on Griffith, Gleason Van Dyke and Lucy and Desi. Producers have always had the reputation of using the casting couch to get EXTRAS, Lucy herself went through that when starting out, some considered it easier to go that route instead of actually having talent, LOL! An obvious one was Joy Lansing who guested on the one where they get stuck on an island after the fuel for the boat expires, she also did a Lucy Desi comedy hour, with Paul Douglas i think, where they even mentionned all this, Lucy doing wolf whistles describing Paul who was looking for a girl Friday, trouble is sometimes it was for the whole week. LOL!

Believe me, the way PBS aired the American Masters with Lucille Ball several times over, they will do the same with this. The program will air its next segment on Wednesday. Just check the PBS website and it can help you there.

Yeah, I caught that as well. Gosh, Barbra Eden looked AMAZING!!! If I was her, I would have been intimidated by both the status of Lucy and Desi as well.

By the way, the Pioneers of Television series is every Wednesday evening from 8-9 just so you know. It's definately worth catching!

I saw it. It was as obvious as could be that Barbara Eden meant that she was hiding from Desi's advances. She had a great sense of humor about it, but it was as clear as day what she meant. She still looks fantastic.

Yes she does, lost her son a few years ago also.

Yes, so very tragic. Her only child too. Same heartache for Mary Tyler Moore, who lost her only child. :(

and Bill Cosby and Paul Newman, their only sons too, is this an epidemic or what? Does anybody know of what Eden's son died? Was a gun involved or something like steroids as he was this BIG bodybuilder type?

I think it was a drug overdose, if I'm not mistaken. It only happened a few years ago. Barbara Eden and her then-husband also had a stillborn baby boy in 1971, according to a book I read years ago about 1960s TV starlets (I don't remember the name of the book, but it also profiled Donna Douglas, Barbara Feldon and Marlo Thomas among others).

OH Nuts!

I guess Desi really did PROWL. Poor Lucy--no wonder she got so pi**ed at him.
And I don't get it--Lucy was beautiful and smart. Her LEGS were awesome--better than Betty Grable's. And she was still a knockout in her mid-late 50s. But I gotta admit-- Barbara is one of the great blonde beauties....

Yeah, Desi always had trouble trying to keep his BIRD from FLYING as he so quaintly put it, he sure had an eye for the babes, and chased everything in a skirt, which got him in loads of trouble, especially that Scottish guy in the kilt.

Desi was a horndog and one of the biggest skirtchasers going! I'd be more surprised if he didn't chase Barbara Eden. Something was lacking at home for Desi. A man doesn't cheat on a wife he's truly in love with. All this love of the century talk about Lucy and Desi always cracked me up.

See, I knew I couldn't be the only one who see's through this soulmate BS. All those times he had all those young attractive women on the show and knew it made his wife a nervous wreck. But still flirted with and pursued them right in front of her? He didn't respect her at all, let alone Love her!

When I watch a lot of those kind of episodes now, I know that they reflected their real life and they are so hard to watch. It's like he's rubbing it in her face while making fun of her at the same time. It's quite disturbing if you really think about it.

I did an interview in one of my books with Janet Waldo (who played Peggy in THE YOUNG FANS episode with Richard Crenna). She talked about her memories doing that episode and pretty much said the same thing about Desi, always coming by her dressing room, etc. and how Lucy had to keep him on a short leash. So I'm sure Barbara Eden experienced the same treatment while guesting on the show.

She was blonde and very attractive right? He did seem to have a type. When Lucy met him she was blonde and all his girlfriends he was going back and forth from where blondes. He also had this thing for Marilyn Monroe, she's mentioned in the show like 3 times and Lucy even dresses up like her. She was like every man's fantasy though. Debbie Reynolds also claimed in her book that Lucy use to call her up looking for him because he said that he liked her. Desi gave absolutely zero *****!! And people wonder why she acted the way she did.

Like how embarrassing to have to call around to your Hollywood girlfriends looking for your husband, wondering if he's screwing any of them, or watching him fawn over some attractive young star right in front of you! But I forget this is Hollywood were talking about and everyone pretty much slept with everyone. He's not any different from the rest of them honestly. I guess it just bothers me because Lucy really loved him and it seemed to have really messed with her emotionally.
