I was thinking, we all know Lucie would take out all the cigarettes, what would you change about America's favorite sitcom?

well, While Lucie has a good point, I'd otherwise not change a THING, this show was perfect and has proven it for 55 years......how about more seasons?

I love the show as is BUT if I had to change one thing (and I know this won't go over well) I'd have Desi sing wayyyy less. Good actor, amazing business man and very smart but the man couldn't sing IMO. There's a few songs he sings that I do enjoy (like when Lucy told him she was pregnant) but most of them... I can't listen to.
I would have liked more seasons as well.

Yeah more seasons would have been good. Maybe adding a new "strange" neighbor in the apartment building for an episode or two during each season.

I sure wouldn't change much, but I do cringe those couple of times that Ricky actually puts Lucy over his knee and spanks her. I could do without that. Even for the 50's.

I LOVE the Scottish episode :snob:

In fact, there's a new answer.... I'd have added a sequel to the Scottish ep :p so there!

I really can't think of anything I would do to change the show. Everything that's 'wrong' with it (and that's very 'individualized' by the viewer) is just inconsistencies, non-sequitors, or the absence of certain specifics; and since the show is for comedy alone, those are really okay. That did bother me a bit a long time ago, but over the years I have written plays and skits for groups that were performed for laughs, and I did that same thing, finding out it's hard to be funny if everything really "follows."

I would not be in favor of editing out smoking. I understand why some people do favor that, but to me it just helps with the sense of looking back on those times. I would also not be in favor of editing out the line when they arrive at the hospital "You [Ricky] will have to say goodbye to your wife here-- you're not allowed in the labor/delivery room." Obviously that has changed since ILL. And I would be against darkening a few faces, as in Lucy's women's club, or the kids in Little Ricky's school pageant, to make it look "racially diverse," too, even though all-white is an unallowable PC blunder today.

I agree with that 100%. People smoked back then and people smoke today... for me the smoking gave it a more "real" feeling.

How abt Lucy NOT yelling at Ethel those few times she did like in the wallpaper scene where she yells at Ethel and it seems so damn real, like it was personal towards Vivian!

My mother also thinks Desi was a horrible singer. When ever we watch I Love Lucy together my mom covers her ears when Desi sings.

I thought Desi could sing ok. He didn't have the best tone, but he sang on key.

Yeah, you and me both. I swear, i NEVER saw that one coming! I absolutely hated the muscial numbers on the show as a kid because i tuned in for the comedy, but over the decades, i grew to love the music and his singing. You see, i grew up with those songs, some of them are classics and i thought he did them well. Most of hte time, they use his singing to kill time between her hilarious scenes.

Oh and i just realized i never answered my own question. For me, it was the lack of continuity. It's their 17th wedding anniversary this week, but three weeks from now, it's their 25th, i hated that. But that's a small thing, like someone else said, it was a comedy, set up for hilarity, not to make sense. Yeah, i had a feeling the spanking thing would get mentionned and i was not surprised at Irene mentionning the yelling at Ethel thing, God, get over that, will ya? LOL! When you lose patience while doing something, you raise your voice, even with friends, i thought that made it look real. I agree it sounds like it's REAL too, not acting, LOL! Don't forget she rehearsed it that way many times and had redone that same scene many times before, so her frustration shows, LOL!

I also hate the fact that as i watch the same shows for the thousanth time, i never noticed her in the living room in the Vitameatavegamin one, smoking, near the fireplace, i'm just stunned at how many FLUBS made it to taping. They were rushed back then and that's clearly evident, LOL! Finally, i hated that as a kid, i was too dumb to realize that a ten foot loaf of bread would not come out of a twenty four inch oven, now that really annoys me, how dumb was I? LOL!

As for more seasons, i dun't agree. They had run out of ideas by then anyway and you have to quit when you're on top, not wait till they cancel you. I do agree about Drafted though, that never should have made it to air, LOL! Of course Drafted has always been my least favorite ep. Scotland being my number two least fave, but it looks so damned glorious in that beautiful color on the bonus disc that i watch it all the time and now love the thing.

I betcha it was waaaay harder back then to redo it and fix a flub (and may not have been worth it), especially when television was so new...viewers back then not only weren't looking for flubs-- maybe didn't even realize they were happening on tape-- but were still so enamored by television and the stories that they weren't scrutinizing it for flubs like we do today! Just my opinion though.

I would have liked a more proper series finale. I would have put the scene with Edie Adams singing "That's All" at the end of "Lucy Meets the Moustache" and had clips of all 9 years playing with the singing in the background.

True, these people back then watched the shows on these tiny tv sets, not like today where we see it on giant screens and the picture is so perfect you notice the flaws even more.

* "The Kleptomaniac"

* "Lucy Goes to Scotland" (although it was cool seeing it in color recently)

You haven't waited long enough, they're still selling the boxed set right now, it might take a few months. Get a copy in the meantime from someone who has the set, it can be made in minutes, they're ripping us off so they should get it in return. LOL!
