View Full Version : FOL Sadness
thenamestiffxx 01-01-2008, 09:54 PM Is it just me or is The Facts of Life incredibly addicting? I'm just 14 years old and being a young child I would love watching FOL on nick at nite, so I got the first 3 seasons. But then i found out it will be a long while before Season 4 and ect. come out. So i've just seen the first 3 seasons and I'm incredibly sad to see the episode where mrs.garrett leaves. It breaks my heart to see when the girls get into fights on the show. I love this show SO MUCH. This show has basically taken over my life too and I can't stop watching it. I even try to act like the characters and I feel depressed when I'm not watching it. I can only be happy when I'm watching it. I have a big obsession with this show and the characters. But I guess it's just me. If anyone has any advice on how to make me feel better or what I should do let me know.
*Happy Face* 01-02-2008, 05:12 PM You can watch FOL episodes on YouTube.
RoryGilmore 01-02-2008, 06:50 PM Yeah YouTube has like all the eps

I totally understand. When I was about 10/11 years old I used have the hugest obsession with this show ever... probably more then you. I had seen every episode and use to tape it (VHS, no DVD back in the day:)) when they showed it on nick @ nite every week night at 9pm pacific time. I remember I would buy all these tapes and my VCR would be automatically set to tape it M-F. I once cried when they had a Gilligan's Island Marathon because it ran through the FOL time slot and I was going to miss TWO whole episodes... crazy huh? I had pictures galore of the cast all over my bedroom and binder and that's all I talked about at home/school/with my friends ect. I used to quote lines from the show in real life and imitate the characters. Everybody thought I was crazy. Get this, I even used to try and dress like the characters did... I was dressed like the 80's in 2001. Anyways, blah, blah, blah, the point of my story is that I finally got off my FOL kick by watching other shows that were on TV like Three's Company or Diff'rent Strokes and began to neutrally start watching a variety of TV that were slightly similar (in my case old sitcoms). I still to this day have little obsessions or phases that I go through on Television shows/actors from the show or occasionally movies.
I guess what I'm trying to say is open your horizons... watch a whole plate of different shows along with the Facts of Life and before you know it you'll have found a new show :)
friendsfan77 01-11-2008, 05:16 PM I love this. FOL is just as fun and addictive for me to watch as always. I've loved it for as long as I can remember.
ilovethe80s 01-11-2008, 08:15 PM If you have Comcast Cable it's on On Demand under Tube Time but they only have certain episodes not all of them and i believe it's in season 3 not totally sure.
littlebelle 01-14-2008, 07:27 PM Yes, I just started watching them again... haha, it reminds me of the old obsession.

are you my twin a few years later? haha... i did the EXACT same things, seen every ep, taped them all off of NaN, had the binder, talked and quoted all the time... watched early in the morning before school and then as soon as i got home from school... i would get all excited when the episodes were supposed to come on... i was a freak! But i too moved on in the exact same way by watching other older tv shows... i began to like other shows like diff'rent strokes and leave it to beaver... i still like to watch FOL, but now it's more of a nostalgia.... I have tons of memorabilia from ebay of FOL, and my mom thinks i should sell them and make money (i am now 22 and getting married in a year) but it's good memories of my "childhood" if you can think of it htat way... 1999-2002 were some of hte best years i had with FOL! so some day you'll look back and laugh at yourself, but it was a great time!
littlebelle 01-15-2008, 07:07 PM Wow! So I wasn't the only one. Now-a-days I'm beginning to find a lot of people that were obsessed with it like you and I were. She show must just have had some addictive qualities!
p.s. I have an FOL light switch and b&w Jo & Blair graduation glossy... I still can't seem to have the guts to sell 'em :(
Dean Winchester 01-19-2008, 12:02 AM the point of my story is that I finally got off my FOL kick by watching other shows that were on TV like Three's Company or Diff'rent Strokes
not to be rude, because I do enjoy both shows, but IMO, neither Three's Company nor Diff'rent Strokes are a true substitution for Facts Of Life. I enjoy both shows, but FOL has so much more heart to it.
SBTB Geek 01-19-2008, 03:12 AM ^I agree. I simply appreciate the realness behind it... the closest thing to it nowadays is "Degrassi." It's just sad that a whole new generation (of girls in particular) aren't being exposed to FOL.
My niece discovered it in YouTube with help from my sister. It truly speaks to her (she's 14) and she loves it.
FOL85NatandMrsGRock 01-21-2008, 03:07 PM haha, yea... degrassi... that's kinda like FOL. I am 22 and like that show too, but to be more honest. it's a little more sereal than FOL (degrassi htat is) It deals with way too many hard issues and everyone on there is sleeping around... the only one who had sex on FOL was nat and she was 22? These girls on degrassi are like 14 and doing it for the first time... so yea, if you wanna talk about the issues, Degrassi totally has it... but FOL has the wholesomeness... which is important for girls like your niece!
Dean Winchester 01-21-2008, 03:39 PM well, times have changed from the 80's to today. Issues like sex and the sort seem to creep in with younger and younger girls today than in the 80's.
I much prefer watching FOL, but Degrassi does hit hard with issues of the day that teens need to face up to

Never said it was a substitute, just a way of adding some variety to constant FOL watching.
FOL85NatandMrsGRock 01-21-2008, 11:51 PM i actually disagree about the sex being brought on at a younger age for today's youth than in the 80's... i am the product of a high school pregnancy along with a couple of my friends. My mom also talked to me about sex early becuase when she was in high school, almost everyone was having sex... i think the issue is the same now as it was then, it's just "accepted" and talked about more... (the reason i have the word accepted in quotations is becuase as a christian i don't agree with sex before marriage, but i know it is done) But FOL did do a good job of incorporating it every once in a while, like the 1st season's Facts Of Love (which was not done well IMO... but most of the 1st season topics weren't, haha) and then The Source even brought up the subject of abortion, so that was pretty intense for the 80's, the subject is even STILL intense becuase Degrassi's episode where Manny got an abortion was banned in the US for several years!!

that is true, but I do think the Jamie Lynn Spears situation, and even the success of the movie Juno (which is about a bright 16 year old girl who made a "mistake") is finally letting people realize that teenage pregnancy happens to their own daughters, it's no longer the stereotype that it only happens to girls who grew up in broken homes and on welfare. So that's why I think it's important to be addressed since a lot of girls are having sex at an early age and are getting knocked up, and it's not just "other peoples kids", but it can be your own as well.
*Happy Face* 01-22-2008, 12:01 AM So that's what that's show's about?,I always turn on the TV the minute
it airs. Kind of look a remade ABC After School Special in PG style.
But ABC After School Special was good to watch.

Degrassi is kind of a My So Called Life type of show about "real teenage issues". I guess it's good for what it is but I never watched it
*Happy Face* 01-22-2008, 12:15 AM It doesn't capture my attention. I tired of hearing about today's teen
issues. Half the young adults that I know today
who went through the various teen issues during high school have
told me their parents were the same way.So I really don't care
about teen issues.Let the parents deal with it themselves.
FOL85NatandMrsGRock 01-22-2008, 08:41 AM that is true, but I do think the Jamie Lynn Spears situation, and even the success of the movie Juno (which is about a bright 16 year old girl who made a "mistake") is finally letting people realize that teenage pregnancy happens to their own daughters, it's no longer the stereotype that it only happens to girls who grew up in broken homes and on welfare. yes, it is scary that today's youth is getting more involved with sex so young and not taking the proper precautions i guess you could say. And it is not just the girls from broken homes, like you said... and I did like the movie Juno, it is hard to believe that girls have gone through those things before... it just seems that the temptation and amount of people out there having sex would be the same now as it was in the 80's, like you said, it's now more of a realization that it could be ANYONE! And it's too bad FOL didn't address this situation a little bit more, the pressure a little bit more, from both your friends and the boys. The only little bit of pressure we saw was during Tooties dilema in My Boyfriends Back. However, it was a little sad that there was no Mrs. G involvement... but the pressure is the part that needs to be surpassed, sex is taken to casual these days, it's like a drug, kids who are troubled or don't know where to turn use sex like they might uses drugs or alcohol....
RoryGilmore 01-22-2008, 07:07 PM When I was 10 (2000) i was totally addicted too, and that probably lasted till about 2004 when it went off the air. and I kinda just dropped it and totally forgot about it, then we moved to where i am now in 2006 I found all my FOL tapes and remembered this site and here I am. not obsessed anymore but still enjoy the show, taught me a lot

Thank you for bringing back the real meaning of this thread... it was beginning to digress. I am too a product of a former FOL obsession.

any time, in my mind obsession is okay as long as you can eventually get over it, but I seem to be pulling myself slowly back into it

Haha, I think my FOL obsession was so extreme that I could never "re-kindle the old flame"... but I'll always love it.
