View Full Version : Did Elly wear a wig?
elly mae 01-01-2008, 08:15 PM I just watched the episode Donna was on in The Twilight Zone and her hair was short. The top and sides were curly like on the Beverly Hillbillies. So it made me wonder if the long hair she had on the show was a wig. Most of the time on TBH, she had a pony tail. But whatever, real or not, it was beautiful.
Janice 01-01-2008, 10:16 PM I think Elly wore a lot of extensions, pieces, that sort of thing. In the Lester Flat/Earl Scrubbs episode, Elly walks down the stairs in a gown, and meets their wives. My first thought was that she was wearing pieces. I think Donna had gorgeous hair anyway, but they just wanted it over-the-top beautiful. Sort of like Chrissy Snow on Three's Company with her multiple ponytails, lol, Elly's ponytails could have been fake. That was the rage in the 60s. My mother had a 'fall', as they were called.

yes, a fall, that's correct. That WAS the rage. I was disappointed to learn that MTM wore a fall on her show when she had shoulder length hair with a flip up.
Everything I read about Donna Douglas tells what a sweet person she was in real life. She was Miss West Virginia before she was picked for TBH. I'm glad she kept her morals and values.
treky 01-02-2008, 04:40 PM yea; I remember my mother also had a "fall" back then.
Mary Tyler Moore wore one on her show? I never knew that!
Janice 01-03-2008, 03:10 AM Of course, Pearl was sporting a full wig. Not many women at her age have such a full head of hair. I have a silly habit of noticing the women who wear wigs on tv shows, and the guys with their toupees. On the Jefferson's it's more a question of who doesn't wear one....Louise, Mother Jefferson and Helen. Wigs are very big in show business.
comedyfreak 01-03-2008, 05:28 AM Aunt Esther wore a wig too.
Scoobiedoo30 01-03-2008, 03:44 PM I do not think Elly had a wig

What's that supposed to mean?

Hollywood didn't mess her up, or she didn't let it.
ethelmaepotter 04-02-2008, 12:07 PM Well, she basically left her kid with her parents so she could embark on a career in show business. Not all that moral or valued, is it?
tv star collector 04-02-2008, 05:55 PM A few years ago, Donna Douglas spoke to more than 300 First Baptist Church
members in nearby Rock Hill, South Carolina. She talked about choosing faith
over fear and following God by not trying to impress others but being true to
oneself. Her hair was still in blond braids, and (judging by the local newspaper
photo), she didn't look much different from Elly May on The Beverly Hillbillies.
gidgetgrape 04-02-2008, 07:53 PM same do!

I fail to see anything immoral or unvalued about it. Perhaps you could share your thought process?

Rue Mclanahan of the Golden Girls left her kid with her parents went to NY to try acting.
lucyandethel 04-01-2013, 04:30 PM It may have been her real hair years ago, but I don't believe it still is. I saw her at an autograph show in the early 1990s. I believe it was a wig she was wearing then. Makes sense, because when she is not wear her hair, she probably can go out in public without being noticed.

I saw some show once, I can't remember the name or what year it was on but she said Hollywood was never bad to her. So that was good. Any job has good and bad to it. All you can do is just do the best you can and stick to your true self.
biffbronson 04-23-2013, 05:34 PM It's also possible that Donna was wearing wigs to have a shorter-hair look prior to her role as Elly -- but I think it's most likely that for Season 1 of Beverly Hillbillies, she's wearing a fall attached to her hair for length.
There were so many wig-wearers on famous sitcoms, including Shelley Long and Barbara Feldon. It was even revealed that Teri Hatcher has had some extra hair clipped into hers on Desperate Housewives (for thickness).
As far as Bea Benadaret, I think we do see her real hair on Petticoat Junction -- once in a while she has it down. (On BH though, wigs were obvious for Pearl.)

I saw a recent picture of her on the internet and she looks like she has on a blond wig like the hair Ellie use to wear.
