I know that broadcast tv goes digital in feb of 2009 and I was wondering what will my mom's friend who currently has NO CABLE and uses an Antenna to watch TV have to do 13 months from now?

She'll have to purchase a digital converter, The FCC is giving $40 coupons toward the purchase of one. Details can be found here:

I was shocked when my mom told me because I didn;t think NO ONE used an antenna in 2008.

I think it's silly. Granted, I shouldn't care because I don't watch tv; but I hate that the powers that be are forcing it.

She'll have to either get a digital-to-analog converter, or she can get a digital TV. Expect the prices of HDTVs to go way down in 2008.

TV stations are starting to put up resources on their websites that explain the switch:

This is sort of offtopic, but I think it relates.

I like to watch "Friday Night Lights" on NBC and I've been noticing that it's being pan-and-scanned now. Last season and for the first couple of episodes of this season, it was letterboxed, but not anymore, and it bugs the crap out of me. Same thing with some CW shows...over the summer, I watched "Hidden Palms" and its credits were always chopped off. What's going on with that?

I have Dish so im not too worried about it. Come 2009 I will be buying a HD tv at the lowest price possible. There is no way im gonna pay $1000 on a tv I rather go on a weekend trip or something else.

"There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat, there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to... The Outer Limits."

Ahhh, memories of the Outer Limits.

I really feel for those elderly folks or those on a fixed income who can't afford to spend $20-$40 for a converter. There are those who just CAN'T DO IT. With or without a government coupon.

I remember back in the days when all you needed was an antenna. Then, came the *insert lightening and thunder sound* CABLE COMPANY telling us we "needed to pay" for what we were already getting FOR FREE!!!!! This whole situation reminds me of that moment in time.

You can go to www.dtv2009.gov to get the two coupons for the free converters. The government are giving everyone 2 free converters.

Solomon, she means what is the whole point of the country having to get digital, in other words, why does this have to happen? Why can't those who have analog be able to watch tv. Then, the poster after her commented that is the way for the government to control us.

The converters aren't free, The coupons are good for $40 off one but the consumer will still have to pay the remaining balance. The total cost for one will be $50-$70.
