Aah, my mom used to make black-eyed peas for New Years when I was a kid and I remember it would stink up the house!! So no on the black-eyed peas and I've never had collard greens before(although I know what they are).

Corn bread sounds good though with a piping hot bowl of chili!!:liplick:

By the way,Brian Damage, If you wanted bland tasting cooked vegetables
to taste better,Try adding some melter butter or Cheddar cheese sauce
or better yet,Some salt and pepper,Although salt and pepper, helps only
a little, But who cares at least doing those things will help the flavor!!!

Thanx Brian.
I have always wondered. I seen them being made in a movie and they resemble spinach. I just never knew what ingredients are added to them or how they tasted.

I like to put a choppped onion and a ham hock when preparing my collard greens to give them extra flavor. They do take a while to cook if you're making fresh ones. It's best to let them cook on low heat.

My mom likes to makes black eyed peas and cabbage on New Year's.

I'm really not a huge fan of cornbread, but I do like it when it's sweet and hot right out of the oven.

Cool - I didn't know about this Southern tradition. I've never tried collard greens - they sound interesting, but I have a feeling I wouldn't like them. Even now, I usually can only stomach spinach when it's "hidden" with something and called "Florentine"!. lol I get the feeling they're a cross between spinach and kale, and kale is hideous! (bitter, bitter, bitter!)

I used to eat black eyed peas and catfish though as a kid. My best friend's dad was from Memphis and introduced me to them - LOVED THEM! Yum!
His wife was a Newfie so the cooking at their house was really interesting....and really good!

I'll be doing a honey ham with scalloped au gratin potatoes, yams, mashed turnip and a butterscotch pie for dessert on New Year's Eve though.

Not only do we eat collard greens, black eyed peas, and cornbread, etc., but it's also customary to prepare a gallon of chitterlings. Yuck!! The house smells for 3 days.

 It's a wonder that the lifespan in the American South isn't around 36 years!

I find cornbread a little too "grainy". My aunt in Dallas has a million recipes for cornmeal. The best is one "baked stuff zucchini" - you boil the zucchini, scoop out the pulp and mix it with cornmeal, corn niblets, soda crackers and something else (can't remember now) and restuff the zucchini shells and then sprinkle with parmesean cheese and bake for a half hour. Boy are they good!

Not for New Years Day, but I eat collard greens all the time. They're really good, especially collard green soup.

My grandmother always made sure we ate black eyed peas for luck and cabbage for wealth every Jan.1. This year I'm not sure what I will be eating, I am away from home for a job, and I have been invited over to a coworkers for New Years Day.

No idea what she will be cooking, but I know it'll be good.

I love collard greens with macaroni and cheese and fried chicken.

I'm really not a fan of black eyed peas, in fact, New Year's Day is probably the only time I'll have them, at least at home.

I've never heard of this tradition and there's no way I'm eating any collard greens & I don't want to listen to black-eyed peas muchless eat them however, I will eat cornbread as long as I've made it myself.

We grew up eating the black-eyed peas on News Day but not the other stuff, so I'll probably fix some. It's supposed to bring you good luck but some years I think it does the opposite. (lol!) Anyway, I put a couple of slices of bacon in with the peas when I cook them, makes em' taste better to me.

I will be eating black eyed peas, collard greens and cornbread on New Year's Day to have for the luck and money.

Its probably a tradition that I wont be holding true too in later years but my mom and her mom both do this every year. ... They are from the alabama and I guess they get it from there, but man.. They also make chitterlings.. I wont explain what they are..Only that they stink very much
