The M*A*S*H writers and producers changed the character of Trapper John from what they had originally told Wayne. He wanted to give Trapper some character development, but they refused, so he quit the show. In the beginning, he was told that it would be like the movie, that he and Alan Alda would be co-stars, but they ended up centering the show around Alan Alda. It was really crappy the way they screwed Wayne over like that. Remember how they mentioned that Hawkeye was a chest cutter? That was supposed to be part of Trapper's character, not Hawkeye's.
