View Full Version : Wally's $19 school sweater
elly mae 12-20-2007, 10:42 PM Wally said his mom and dad were making such a fuss about him getting back his sweater because it cost $19. I did a search on what that sweater would cost in today's dollars. It would cost $136. That's an expensive sweater.
Ireneparalegal 12-20-2007, 10:49 PM $19 is certainly an amount of money one should not throw away in that era. It may not seem like much to us now, but back then that could buy a hell of a lot of groceries, pay a couple of bills, etc. I remember when that amount could FILL A GAS TANK.
Wally didn't get what the fuss was about because he was a teen.
catlover79 12-20-2007, 10:54 PM It really is a bygone era, isn't it?? :(
Janice 12-20-2007, 11:15 PM Ward was dead serious, he wanted that sweater back home. That was funny how Wally got mad at the girl when he went to her house to get it, and then on the phone.
Waterston_Fan 12-20-2007, 11:28 PM It's interesting also that the girl didn't realize Wally wasn't interested in her.
They never showed her calling Wally alot and stuff...

I wondered that same thing about whether she didn't have a clue OR she did realize it and was just trying to impress her gf's with wearing his sweater.
When I was in HS, it really was a big deal for a girl to wear her bf's letter sweater. I wonder if schools even do that anymore cause I never see any boys around town wearing them.

Yeah it was funny how Wally had to be mean in order to get the sweater back. And even after that, the girl still was "in love" with Wally. I guess that is an example of being in denial.

Wow  $136 dollars for a sweater. When Beaver damanged the accordian that was $40 bucks. I didn't think that it was a lot but now I see that he cost Ward a good chunk of change.

OMG, I forgot about the accordion. Isn't that where it fell out of the closet and rolled down the staircase. What a goofy place to hide it.
I think of the two boys, the Beav did cost Ward and June more out of pocket money than Wally.
$19 ----> $136----> approx. 7.16x
Just interesting to consider that factor for other things...
Beaver bought a spiral notebook for $0.50--> that would be $3.58.
Beaver bought the Eskimo sweater for $12.50---> that would be $89.50.
Ward bought the orchid for Wally for $7.50---> that would be $53.70.
Beaver won the sports care valued at $3500---> that would be $25,060.
A "whole dollar" would be a whole $7.16.
An ice cream soda for $.025 would be $1.43.
Now, going the other direction...
$50,000 annual salary would be $6983.
$1.99 for a loaf of bread would be $0.28.
My house is appraised at $103,000---> that would be $14,385.
A DQ hamburger for $2.79 would be $0.39.
It seems the spiral notebook comes out too high; the "sports car" (though that description is all we learn) is too low; my house, which was built just about the LITB time in question, too low-- the sale price in 1963 was $13,000. Orchids I don't know much about ;) .
Janice 12-24-2007, 09:58 PM Just saw an episode where Ward goes grocery shopping with June. They're in the kitchen, and one of them, I think him, makes the remark about Ward's surprise at coffee costing 35 cents a pound. Also, June takes a small box out of the bag, and tells Ward about these new frozen waffles. Just heat them up, she told him, lol.
catlover79 12-25-2007, 12:32 AM ^ That episode sounds awesome...imagine, frozen waffles!! :D

Ireneparalegal 12-25-2007, 02:46 AM What was the cost of records that Beaver received when he joined the music record club? He kept hiding the bills in his drawer and keeping the new record he received, not realizing the cost that would soon come.

He certaintly did. No wonder Ward did not give up his money so easily. I thought that he was just tight.
He probably hid the accordian in his closet because he knew that june was around their room snooping all of the time and would find it. You know how she is.

I think that was $19 and some odd cents. Quite coincidental with the value of Wally's letterman sweater.
Mrs. Ducky 01-06-2008, 03:20 PM I don't know about other schools, but at my high school, a letterman jacket costs about $125. We don't have letterman sweaters...probably because boys don't wear sweaters anymore.
I wish they did. Sweaters are sexy. :)

Indeed a coincidence. I never knew they even had record clubs back then until I seen this episode. I thought that was a scam of that started in the 70's.
That episode is one of my faves because Beaver is so naive to the whole record club deal and the way he dances to the music as he plays them.

The thing that would keep the price down today, of course, is that the sweater would likely be made in a third world country by people making pennies a day. I imagine that Beaver's sweater had Made in USA on the label.
