View Full Version : Episode THE FIRST STOP...
Ireneparalegal 12-15-2007, 04:46 PM Traveling to California, the fab four stop at a rickety restaurant and hotel.
Has anyone else ever noticed the floor underneath the rolling bed as the trains go by and the bed rolls around? You can see what appears to be some sort of rails, which allow the bed to move in that half-circular motion. I noticed that a long time ago and wondered if any other fans noticed it as well.
You hear Ethel talking abt how she and Fred have been making their bed for 25 years because of the problem Lucy and Ricky are having sinking into that hole. Yet, we have seen the Mertzes' bedroom once and they never shared a bed. They had twin separate beds.
Larry Surrell 12-15-2007, 09:20 PM I noticed the track too, Irene. I haven't watched that episode in a while, but I seem to remember that I could see the string that pulls the bed across the room too!
One thing that irritates me about that scene is when the 2nd train is coming, Ricky keeps saying over and over that the train is coming the other way now. He was in bed; how did he know which direction the train was coming from?

Hmmmmm....good question abt how Ricky knew that. ;)

It's supposed to sound different;at least in his Cuban ears.
Janice 12-16-2007, 05:30 PM I just saw this episode, and it was hilarious. That old guy at Motel Hell was a riot, the way he almost sent them out for a 1$ turkey dinner, with all the trimmings, that didn't exist, and then putting that sign on the road that led back to the motel,. LOL on the steering wheel. 16 bucks! I caught Desi's remark about the train coming the other way, and wondered myself.
Ireneparalegal 12-16-2007, 06:04 PM  Glad to read your posts on the ILL board Janice. The more the merrier.
Motel Hell indeed!!!!! You hit that on the head alright. Those rubber cheese sandwiches he served would be condemned by the board of health!
That man was smart though, he figured if he couldn't get them to pay for the hotel, he'd certainly pay for the steering wheel. I wonder if they paid? I wouldn't have. I would have fought him for it.

Sure a train sounds different coming from a different direction. But if Cubans don't have weak tonsils, according to Little Ricky's pediatrician, I don't think they have more sensitive ears, either ;) . But a couple of years ago I stayed in a place in Wyoming that rather compares to that place-- though it was at least a multi-unit motel-- and I heard, maybe, a dozen trains come through from both directions during the night.
I know I've written about this before on here, but to me the most glaring error in this ep is that they said they were so hungry before they stopped at that place, they didn't eat those crummy cheese sandwiches, then Lucy did the turnaround and they were back and they were willing to stay in the crummy cabin. How did they get un-hungry without eating?
Ireneparalegal 12-16-2007, 06:31 PM They were so damn hungry they couldn't think right, as we seen it when Fred stated he didn't care how much it cost to stay at that place..

It was a 'bad' experience; they lost their appetite.:D

 Ethel even said something to that effect. After saying the heck with the $16, she says, "He IS hungry." or tired, I forget. They should have taken a plane.

I agree, it was a long time to go without eating. Desi was stubborn, in his refusal to stop and eat, in the beginning. I think it was odd that when they left the motel after the first time, and Lucy drove them right back to the same place, that she had them all get out of the car, before she realized it was the same motel. I know it was dark, but still. When they started to get undressed and realized they weren't alone, lol....and Ethel gets toothpaste all over her face.
That was wild when Desi fell off the top bunk. He was a decent sized man. It happened so fast, and now I'm wondering if they used a double. He took quite a tumble. Great episode. It was my first time seeing it.
Kazza 12-17-2007, 08:22 AM I read that Desi did all the 'stunts' himself; what a brave man to be subject to shin kicks (even with padding), falling off from top bunks, slipping on rice (which happened for real  and doing piggy back on a tv set for the Mertzes anniversary.

That would make a great "Myth Busters" episode to prove whether a dragging bed's direction is a function of a nearby train's travel direction.
SPLAIN 12-17-2007, 02:09 PM Lucy Ricardo says it's simple, the sound of the train was coming through his left ear, hence the train was travelling left to right, and besides, the month had an R in it.

 Seeing Ethel with toothpaste all over cracks me up every single time I see that scene. Hearing Fred scream to Ethel if she was alright...
As for Desi falling, that was HIM! He made all those stunts seem so simple. I made a thread abt how he fell in one of the first season episodes (the fur coat episode) and he seemed to almost hit his face on the floor. He had very little cushion (holding the fake fur). Madame X posted pics showing that fall. I need to find that thread and link it here for you Janice. There is another episode where Ricky falls on a rock hard bed and it appears he hits his face on it. The Ricardos are in Italy and Ricky just climbed some stairs and just walked to the bed and fell on it. The bed must have been made with wood from the sound of the fall on it. Madame X also posted pics of that. You can see what a great job Desi did in those falls. He must have practiced intensely because you cannot tell he had any sort of cushion.
Here is the link showing the pics: http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=210754&highlight=ricky+falls
and here is the link regarding the fall on the bed:

Janice 12-19-2007, 02:39 AM Thanks for those links Irene. I never knew how good Desi was at physical comedy. He was no Jack Tripper, but he held his own.
Ireneparalegal 12-19-2007, 07:45 PM You are welcome Janice.

Well he was a pretty good tripper when he had his fill of Jack Daniels though.

SPLAIN 12-20-2007, 04:05 PM It was so funny, they'd ask him why he drank, he'd answer TO FORGET! So they'd ask, forget what? And he'd answer, i dunno, i drink so much, i forgot!
