Have anyone noticed the tension between Linda Lavin and Polly Holliday in Flo's final season on the show??? There's not much sisterly interaction between them as it was in the earlier seasons and you will find Linda rolling her eyes everytime Flo said something funny.

Polly Holliday is like Bea Arthur that everytime she opens her mouth you would laugh.

It's sad knowing how much tension there was behind the scenes between them. I'm still enjoying myself watching this show, but like with other shows that had backstage tension, I can't help but look at it in a different light.

Such a shame they couldn't resolve their differences. I don't think they ever did. Does anyone know for sure?

This has been bugging me. If the tension was there, why would the director not try to do something abt it? I mean, if it is obvious to the viewers, surely the director could see it too, so why not direct the actresses or at least Linda to soften her reactions?

If you saw the episode with Eve Arden when Tommy went on the talk show Alice hardly ever looked in Flo's direction during the episode. When Tommy blabbed out on TV about Flo leaving Tommy by himself at her mobile home trailer when she watched him while Alice was out of town. You can see the tension between those two in the interacting when Flo told Alice that she was jealous and you can see Polly actually telling Linda that. Linda's reactions to Polly's Flo was hard and obvious that there was resentment that it was becoming Flo's show. The producers should had dealt with Linda on that instead they gave her own her show and not coming back to Alice after it failed.

I too would love to believe that they could tollerate one another well. Both ladies in their own rights are incredible actresses and I can live with knowing that. I do find it interesting however That Flo had a consistent following enough to place it in the top 10 of all shows in its premiere season.

Had CBS not moved it around so much I happen to think that it might have eventually had higher ratings and I have always wondered what if when it comes to Flo.

Btw, for those of you from the US, Amazon Unbox actually has the entire series run of Flo and the first season of Alice available to own via download...I'm with the crowd that is begging Warner Brothers to release both on DVD but this might be an alternative if they keep us from having the shows we love in the DVD format.

The show had good ratings, stayed in the top 10 and had a 9 year run

The last three seasons it got out of the top 10.

In 1982-83 season it was on the verge of being cancelled when it was nearly at the bottom of the ratings.

In 83-84 it was #25

84-85 it was #60

The first season it was #30.

polly aka flo hinted to access hollywood that a certain cast member was not to kind to her and she refused to say more than that on the subject.
linda lavin was actually the most boring character on that show. i only watched to see flo and vera.linda lavin wanted the concept to be more of a forum to showcase her broadway stage talents and less situation comedy that flo was bringing to the show and the audience really responded to flo and it made linda lavin furious.polly also hinted she never wanted to leave alice for her own show but the producers were kinda being pressed to by linda lavin

If that is true I can't believe Linda Lavin would be so mean and jealous like that. She should've realized the show would be better off and get better ratings with Flo on the show and the laughs she got. Alice was still the star anyway and she should've been a team player and done whatever it took to keep the show popular and appealing.

Since Polly nor Linda speak about their supposed "fued" publically -- although I recall Diane Ladd addressing it on the E! True Hollywood Story -- there has been a bit of a conspiracy theory of sorts surrounding Flo getting a spin-off in the first place, according to some fans of the show.

It pretty much goes that Linda Lavin became a bit jealous that the character of Flo had become so popular and that the tension on the set could be downright palpable at times. I can definately see LaLavin being a BIG diva, btw.

Apparently, Lavin made it known that she wanted Polly off the show but since firing her for just that reason would be illegal, the producers came up with the idea of a spin-off to appease both actresses.

It seemed to be a good fix to a nasty situation, seeing as how Linda and Polly (if there even was a fued between them) no longer had to work together and the producers were making money off of two sitcoms, not just one.

The fact that FLO was cancelled so quickly after its premier seemed to be a moot point, since the situation had been handled in such a way that it had no legal repercussions.

Not sure if I buy into this line of thought, however, in a strange way, it almost seems to make sense.

Had anyone heard this before? I'd be interested to know your thoughts, and if, in fact, either actress ever discussed a supposed fued between them.

Also, did Diane Ladd leave the show on her own accord, or was she let go by the producers?

^ I think I heard Diane Ladd chose to leave because she wanted to do movies again...plus I think she only had a one-year contract.

Polly and Diane should have HIT Linda! I don't know if the bitch realizes it, but she ruined her own show.

I don't like Linda and I couldn't stand the Alice character. I only watched it for Flo and Mel. Anyway, I like posting about Alice. She let's me let all my true feeling out.

She ruined her own show because she forced Pollt to leave. She didn't like her becoming the front and center character. The show never recovered once Polly left.

As much of a control freak as Linda Lavin obviously was when it came to being so worried about co-stars showing her up, you would think that she would have been as equally concerned about the quality of scripts they were given.

In my opinion, the series never fully bounced back once Polly Holiday departed, but at least Diane Ladd was a suitable replacement, if only they'd given her a chance to fully become integrated into the show. But then again, I blame LaLavin for Diane Ladd leaving only after a year.

Once Celia Weston joined, the quality of the show continued to go downhill, although this is no reflection on Celia, seeing as how she's one of the best character actresses out there.

It's just that after this point, the scripts were predictible, boring, and downright silly. The episode where Jay Leno and Ron Palillo play bikers is absolutely horrible.

Why didn't Linda Lavin make a fuss about the quality of script that equaled her fussing about co-stars?
