Rev. Ike was kinda like the Jimmy Swaggart of the 70's. Rev Ike was flamboyant and pretty controversial because of his massive wealth from his sermons in such. In fact he talked about money more than he did about God, so to some he seemed to be a crook. He was the brunt of a lot of jokes though, and no matter what they said, he died a very wealthy man.

Thanks. I always wondered myself who Reverend Ike was.

I didn't know Reverend Ike has passed away. He was quite a character. He preached a prosperity gospel. His website used to have sermons on there by him. He was very charismatic and quite the public speaker. I read that in one of his letters once that if one served money, it was a bad thing, but he made money serve him. Years ago he aired late at night in Macon, GA in an infomercial pitching his "prayer cloths". He had a red one and money-green one for special financial blessings. Curious seeker of faith that I was, I called and ordered them. The person on the line said they were free. So I sent my request and never got them. Instead I got a request for my donation so I could receive them and the blessings that would come along with these scraps of cloth. A few weeks later, I got a scratch off lottery ticket from his ministry that I was to scratch off and return with my donation and blessings. I never returned anything and eventually was taken off the mailing list. I also got his magazine once that wrote mostly of the material prosperity God had to offer me, through Reverend Ike's ministry.

I just took a look at www.revike.org and it seems only fitting that the following would be posted.

In lieu of flowers, Rev. Ike would ask that tributes and/or Offerings be sent to:

Aunt Esther occasionally mentioned the leader of her church, Reverend Spike, which was a play on the name Reverend Ike. The character never made an appearance on the show as did Fred's Reverend Trimble (Alvin Childress, who also played Amos on 'Amos & Andy).

Reverend Ike often preached: "The LOVE of money is not the root of all evil! The LACK of money is the root of all evil!"
