(I don't want to be accused of overkill, so this is the last of my "Appreciation
Threads.")

It has been said, rightly so, that Jimmy Stewart made more "feel-good movies"
than any other star. With director Frank Capra, he made "Mr. Smith Goes to
Washington" (1939) and "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946); both earned Stewart
Oscar nominations. But, later in his career, he was equally capable of showing
the cynical side of humanity in such films as Otto Preminger's "Anatomy of a
Murder" (1959) and John Ford's "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (1962)
In a career that spanned over 40 years, he made more than 70 movies. And he
was believable in every single one. He won an Oscar for "The Philadelphia
Story" (1940), and, in 1980, received the AFI's Life Achievement Award.

What are some your favorite Jimmy Stewart films? Mine include:

It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
Harvey (1950)
Anatomy of a Murder (1959)
Shenandoah (1965)
The Rare Breed (1966)
The Shootist (1976)
The Magic of Lassie (1978)
An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (1991; voice of Sheriff Wylie Burp)

Jimmy Stewart was ALWAYS a class act. I always cry whenever I see It's a Wonderful Life. He should've gotten an Oscar for that one!!

I agree! He was nominated but lost to Fredric March, who won an Oscar for "The Best Years of Our Lives." The movie "It's a Wonderful Life" was also nominated, and it, too, lost to "The Best Years of Our Lives." But I'd bet that
a lot more people have seen "It's a Wonderful Life." Go figure.

I've never seen The Best Years of Our Lives, but it was one of my grandmother's all-time favorite films. I'll have to check it out one of these days.

Some others I like are Rear Window, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Anatomy of a Murder, The Flight of the Phoenix, and my favorite Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

James Stewart was a very talented and classy actor. He gave what I think is the greatest screen performance in movie history in my all time favorite film-Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo.
