The characters in the 1964 creepy sitcom THE ADDAMS FAMILY are much
older than most people realize. They're based on cartoon characters that
Charles Addams created for a series of cartoons in The New Yorker magazine,
beginning in 1933. Actually, the versions in the recent movies are truer to
Addams' original, darker version than the (relatively) lighter tone of the ABC
sitcom from the '60s. They even look more like their cartoon counterparts: Raul Julia looks more like Gomez, Anjelica Huston more like
Morticia, etc. Hanna-Barbera produced two different Saturday morning cartoon versions. The first (1973-1975) featured the voices of Jackie
Coogan and Ted Cassidy (Uncle Fester and Lurch, respectively, from the
original TV series). It was also adapted into a comic book (a comic book
based on a TV cartoon based on a TV sitcom based on a series of magazine
cartoons!). Talk about coming full circle. The later theatrical movie also
inspired a new cartoon series (also from Hanna-Barbera). This time John
Astin (from the TV show) was available to provide the voice of Gomez.

Thanks for posting. I always enjoyed Addams' macabre sense of humor.
