Yes! She did show some great dramatic acting. That is what makes this one of my fave episodes. It wasn't too over-the-top and it was nice to not have one of those audience reactions...Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

That particular season, the third one, was the best season for Alice and the beginning of Linda Lavin's jealousy of Polly Holliday. Flo was the breakout character of the show. In the following season, 79-80 when Flo was spinned off in the middle of that season, you can see the difference in the interaction between Flo and Alice. The tension between those two was obvious. Watch the episodes and you will see what I mean.

It was a moving episode and I can totally relate to it since I have a non-existant relationship with my father and always have.

I thought another good serious sitcom role Polly did was on The Golden Girls episode "Blind Ambitions."
