View Full Version : Holiday Gifts. Gift Bags or Wrapped?
Janice 12-03-2007, 12:13 AM I don't do much shopping these days, as I'm into gift cards and checks. I used to use both, but those gift bags sure are handy time-savers. You can pay a small fortune for some of them too. Still, there's something so pretty and elegant about a gift that's wrapped with beautiful paper, ribbon and a bow on top. I've always been partial to foil paper.

OH Nuts! 12-03-2007, 12:23 AM Another nice option, is to wrap in cellophane, tie it with lots of curling ribbon and curl the ribbon. (Not just for gift baskets.)
But 1/2 the time I do what you do. Gift cards to the person's favorite store or to a store like Target or Trader Joe's where everyone can find something.

I totally agree.
dawsongirl 12-03-2007, 12:33 AM Wrapping. Half the fun of the holiday is screwing up the wrapping.

...And I do plenty of that.
Ireneparalegal 12-03-2007, 12:36 AM Ohhh I love foil paper wrap too. It is not the same with that bland paper. Sparkle is how I see it. I love the gold wrap and blue wrap. I love to wrap gifts.
Janice 12-03-2007, 12:38 AM There are some cool novelty bags. Mickey Mouse, Barbie, Spiderman, things like that. If you're giving a niece or nephew several gifts, those bags are perfect.
Ireneparalegal 12-03-2007, 12:39 AM When I get gift bags from a present, I save them and re-use them. I have a box filled with them and they are ready for the right occasion. But at Christmas, I use foil wrap 99 percent of the time. If the gift is unusual in shape or too difficult to wrap, then I use a bag.

Oh, no doubt. Bags can be a legit time saver. If it is my wife or kids though, it has got to be wrapping.

Not these days, but I used to buy those HUGE gift bags for the grandkids. I'd hit Target, and buy seven of everything. Seven kid's watches, seven toothbrushes with matching toothpaste, seven pairs of PJs with matching slippers, seven toys, seven packs of underwear, seven outfits, seven DVDs, seven towels, seven candy gifts, seven kid's cameras, seven pairs of sunglasses, seven this, seven that. Each child got 10 gifts. It was all equal.
Every gift was what each child was into, be it Barbie, Blues Clues, dinosaurs, or the latest Superhero, etc. Every gift had to be age and size appropriate, right down to the toothpaste and toothbrush sets. I would wrap each gift in either blue or pink tissue paper, and put it in the bag, which of course, reflected what the child's interest was that year.
It was a lot of fun. I'd spend hours at Target, and my husband and I would have a blast organizing it all, and filling the gift bags. It wasn't all that easy for me to coordinate, with four boys and three girls, ranging in age from 2 to 10 or whatever. I had to talk with the four Moms ahead of time to find out what they were into that year, sizes, and all that jazz. It was a lot of fun. The kids went wild for them. That's an example where only gift bags would work.
Stormtracker TF 12-03-2007, 01:34 AM Wrapped. Has to be wrapped.
catlover79 12-03-2007, 01:09 PM Gift bags, if I'm giving presents. I suck at wrapping gifts! If I'm the one getting the gifts, it doesn't matter either way if it's wrapped or in a bag. I re-use the gift bags, anyway.

yeah i agree 100%...its actually kind of fun to unwrap gifts, lol.
waichingliu81 12-03-2007, 05:04 PM last xmas, i did both- i wrapped the presents AND put them in gift bags. for me, it depends on how many gifts i get for that person, if i have 3 presents, then i get them a small gift bag and if it is more, then i purchase a large one.
but i always wrap my presents when the holiday period arrives- i mean it is xmas and when i give them their gifts, they expect them to be wrapped and with a bow stuck on it
coffield3 12-03-2007, 06:02 PM I tend to use both, certain things are best for wrapping and others are best for bagging! :D
Both for me too, some things are just too hard to wrap and work better in a gift bag.
mrs.gingerhinkley 12-03-2007, 06:09 PM oooooh! Definately wrapped!
I hate dealing with tissue paper!
Plus it's much more satisfying to open a gift when it's wrapped IMO!
RoryGilmore 12-03-2007, 06:21 PM I prefer to wrap but some things bags are so much easier
DLevine2 12-03-2007, 06:51 PM It depends how I do it. Some years I use a gift bags and most years I wrapped them up.
YoliUSA 12-03-2007, 07:09 PM I like my gifts wrapped. I like the feeling of going to the tree, pick up my presents and unwrap them :)

I read your post really fast and I thought you wrote, "I like to feel up my gifts." :eek2:  :brent I'm sorry!! ;) That's what happens when you read this board on no sleep.
rusyd 12-04-2007, 12:45 AM I do both, depending on the gift.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 12-04-2007, 01:10 AM I prefer wrapped gifts, but gift bags are nicer because unlike (most) wrapping paper you can reuse it. We still have quite a few gift bags from years ago that are in perfectly good shape we still use. I still like wrapping paper more, but it's such a shame all that paper gets thrown out after someone wrips the gift open!
Stormtracker TF 12-04-2007, 01:14 AM yeah i agree 100%...its actually kind of fun to unwrap gifts, lol.
Kind of fun? That's one of the BIG reasons why gifts are fun to me.
swedeace 12-04-2007, 12:41 PM I enjoy wrapped gifts more. I love wrapping them. I know some people find it challenging to wrap gifts, but I don't think it's all that difficult. Besides, it's easier to get creative with gift wrapping.
Plus, it's more difficult to peek at the gift. ;)
Crimson and Clover 12-05-2007, 01:59 PM i love to wrap gifts.
