This is abt actresses (sitcoms, dramas or soaps) who either were pregnant and had their pregnancies written into the show or had their pregnancy hidden or characters who were pregnant but the actress was not in real life:

LUCILLE BALL - I LOVE LUCY: Pregnant in real-life and had her pregnancy written into the show. Lucy was five months along when the Lucy Ricardo character revealed to Ricky she was pregnant. Regardless of the outcome of Lucy's baby (boy or girl) the writers already had established Lucy Ricardo would give birth to a boy. By coincidence, Lucy gave birth to Desi Jr. the same night the episode aired of Lucy Ricardo giving birth to a son.

SHELLEY LONG - CHEERS: She became pregnant during the 1984-85 season, but the writers didn't want to write that into the show as it would alter the character and any future storylines. The staff came up with the idea of Diane and new beau, Frasier vacationing in Europe. They filmed those scenes early in the season before she was showing and then placed them in episodes later in the year. During the early stages of the pregnancy she deftly hid behind the bar or a tray. And when it was impossible to hide her anymore they had the Europe episodes to show.

RHEA PERLMAN - CHEERS: Rhea became pregnant during the same season as Shelley Long but the writers DID write the pregnancy in.

KIRSTIE ALLEY - CHEERS: When Kirstie Alley became pregnant in the 10th season, the show's writers planned for her character, Rebecca, to have conceived a child with Sam. However, Kirstie Alley had a miscarriage and the plot was abandoned.

KATEY SAGAL - MARRIED WITH CHILDREN: In 1991, Katey Sagal discovered she was pregnant. This was unexpected to the directors of Married... With Children. The pregnancy was written in to the storyline of the show. However, she ended up having an emergency caesarean section in her 7th month of pregnancy; the child, Ruby, was stillborn. The pregnancy on the show then turned out to be a "dream."

NELLIE OLSEN - LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE: The character married and eventually became pregnant. Her parents and in-laws were fighting over whether the child would be raised as jewish or christian. They decided if it was a boy, jewish he would be raised. If it was a girl, she would be raised as a christian. Nellie ended up giving birth to a boy and a girl.

CAROLINE INGALLS - LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE: Caroline was pregnant and gave birth to a boy. Her husband wanted a boy after already having three daughters. But the baby later died. Caroline's character was pregnant in another season and she desperately wanted to give Charles a son again. She later gave birth to Baby Grace.

MARY INGALLS - LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE: Mary was pregnant but later had a miscarriage. In another season Mary again became pregnant and had a baby boy. Sadly, the baby would die in a fire later in the show.

LAURA INGALLS - LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE: Laura became pregnant and later gave birth to Rose. In another season she became pregnant again, and just like history repeating itself, she had a son who became sick and later died.

MARY ELLEN WALTON - THE WALTONS: The eldest daughter became pregnant and had a son. Shortly after giving birth, her son was kidnapped by a girl who had lost her own child during birth and wanted a baby desperately. Eventually the baby was returned to Mary Ellen.

SONDRA - THE COSBY SHOW: The eldest daughter of Cliff Huxtable gave birth to a boy and a girl whom she named Winnie and Nelson. Named after the then-married Nelson Mandela and his wife.

ROSEANNE - ROSEANNE: Roseanne was pregnant in real-life by her then husband Ben. She had the pregnancy written into the show. She gave birth to a son in real life and her character also had a son.

JACKIE - ROSEANNE: Laurie Metcalfe who played Jackie, had her real life pregnancy written into the show as well.

DARLENE CONNER HEALY - ROSEANNE: Darlene became pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl who was very sick. It wasn't certain if the baby would live or not. Happily, the baby did live.

Lisa Bonet - became pregnant in real life with Lenny Kravitz's kid in 1988, so she left spin-off A Different World and returned to The Cosby Show. Her character Denise dropped out of Hillman College.

LOL well...more like they totally ignored it  I thought that was ingenious actually that they didn't even try to hide it...just pretended she wasn't

Melissa Peterman on Reba, also ignored the fact she was pregnant. When she was really showing, they had an episode about her character gaining a lot of weight, and goes on a diet.

Janet Hubert-Whitten it was written into The Fresh Prince of Bel Air as the birth of Nicky there was something in her contract I think where it said that getting pregnant would be a violation in her contract. She was fired after that season.

LEAH REMINI - KING OF QUEENS: The actress was pregnant but it was not written into the show. We seen Leah hiding it behind big coats, other clothing and standing behind things. However, it was obvious she was pregnant, the character was one of the stars and she was needed to do many things in scenes. It wasn't like some of the larger cast shows where others could take over the scene.

Lisa Kudrow - Friends. Kudrow was pregnant in real life, so they made Phoebe a surrogate mother to her half-brother and his wife

Sex And The City:
Sarah Jessica Parker was pregnant during the fifth season, which was shortened from 18 to 8 episodes sto avoid making the character of Carrie pregnant and it wrapped before Sarah began to seriously show.

The season before, they wrote in Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) as pregnant. She had a baby at the end of the fourth season. Oddly enough, she actually wound up pregnant in real life the next season at the same time Sarah Jessica was pregnant as well, so a lot of Miranda's "post-baby weight" was actually Cynthia's "pregnancy weight".

Seinfeld: Julia Louis-Dreyfus had two babies during the shows' run, one in 1992 (which explained why she was missing at the start of season 4, maternity leave) and again in the seventh or eighth season.

Gates McFadden was pregnant during one season of "STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION" but they hid it, and Roxanne Briggs-Dawson was pregnant during the 4th season of "STAR TREK: VOYAGER" but they hid it.
Jane Leves was pregnant one season on "FRASIER" but they wrote in that Daphne was getting fat and had her go away when she started to show.

Yeah, they had her as having gone to a fatfarm when it was time for her to have the baby. It was said she had an eating disorder. After she gave birth they wrote it into the script by saying Daphne is doing well and lost 9 pounds so many ounces, it was great. They had fun with her pregnancy, Niles still loved her and didn't notice the weight gain.

Married With Children-When they wrote Peg as being pregnant which she was in real life, they also had Marcie pregnant too. After Katie misscarried, they pulled a Dallas and it was all part of Al's dream. The next time Katie became pregnant they hid it.

Nancy Dussault - Too Close For Comfort. Her TV character, Muriel Rush, was pregnant in the second season but in real life Nancy wasn't. That ruined the series to add a baby because the actress was not happy with the way her character was written.

Probably the most famous example of an actress becoming pregnant and not having a show to return to:

HUNTER TYLO: In 1996, Aaron Spelling fired Tylo from his series Melrose Place when he learned that she was pregnant. Tylo left The Bold and the Beautiful due to the contract that she had signed with Melrose Place and was fired by Spelling before she could film any episodes. Her character Taylor McBride was recast and ultimately played by actress Lisa Rinna. Tylo quickly returned to B&B.

Tylo sued on grounds of discrimination and won nearly five million dollars.

That was a great storyline. And I'll include that Daphne was pregnant in the last season, though Jane Leeves was not.

I forgot to mention that. At the time this episode was filmed, Sally was pregnant with her only child, daughter, Samantha (who's the same age as me). You could tell she was starting to show when I was watching.

I also forgot to mention Susan Saint James and Jane Leeves, I do remember them hiding their pregnancies.

Mary Tyler Moore, she wasn't pregnant in real life as Laura Petrie was on The Dick Van Dyke Show. Same with Fran Dresher on The Nanny, Helen Hunt on Mad About You, and Jasmine Guy & Dawnn Lewis on A Different World. I remember Too Close For Comfort and the fact that Nancy Dussault wasn't pregnant in real life.

These actresses on Little House On The Prairie weren't pregnant in real life, they were faking it on tv: Karen Grassle, Alison Aragrim, Melissa Sue Anderson, Melissa Gilbert.

Also Judy Norton-Taylor (Waltons), Sabrina LeBeuf (Cosby Show), and Didi Conn (Benson) weren't pregnant either, faking it on tv again.

I did mention those actresses already.^^^^^^^^

MARIA from Sesame Street: The actress, Sonia Manzano, became pregnant and eventually had a daughter, Gabriella. Many thought "Maria" was actually married to Luis, another character from the show. Although they married on Sesame Street, they did so because of Sonia's pregnancy. "Maria" and "Luis" are married to other people.

I know you mentioned those actresses already, but you didn't mention if they were pregnant for real or faking it. I'm sure members are curious to find out whether they were for real or faking it for tv.

I didn't know about Maria on Sesame Street, I do remember Gabriella being born though.

Another actress that popped into my mind was Marcia Strassman on Welcome Back Kotter. Her character was pregnant with twins, but Marcia wasn't pregnant in real life.

Just to clarify, my post did make it clear when I mentioned the characters as being pregnant. If the actress was pregnant, I put their real name. If it was just the character who was pregnant, I put the character's name. Thus, Nellie Olsen is a character. Allison Arngrim is the actress. If the actress was pregnant, I did also mention if it was written into the show or not.

Marcia Cross on Desperate Housewives last season, pregnant in real life but not written into the show. She was hidden using big coats and conveniently placed objects. It became ridiculous in the final episodes(was very obvious) before she had to leave the show for awhile(and the show suffered without her). The ironic thing is, early in this season her character faked a pregnancy on the show! :p

For some reason, I didn't think she was. Thanks for clearing that up.

*Women who were pregnant, but their characters were not:

Courtney Cox Arquette was pregnant during the last season of "Friends." Her character, Monica, couldn't get pregnant (I think) for whatever reason. What made that storyline a little odd was that here Courtney was about 7 or 8 months pregnant, but another woman was having Monica and Chandler's babies for them.

Debra Messing was pregnant during the 6th or 7th season of Will & Grace, but her character, Grace wasn't. Grace would end up pregnant a year or so later though.

Jennie Garth was pregnant during the 7th season of "Beverly Hills 90210" and the 1st season of "What I Like About You." Both were hidden.

Moira Kelly was pregnant during the first few episodes of "One Tree Hill." They hid the pregnancy. Her character got pregnant a few years later.

Lucy Lawless was pregnant during "Xena: Warrior Princess" but the pregnancy was hidden.

*Women that were pregnant in real life, and it was written into their shows:

Ming Na and her character Jing Mei/Deb were pregnant during the 7th season of "ER."

Alex Kingston and her character Elizabeth were pregnant during the 7th season of "ER."

Sherry Stringfield and her character Susan were pregnant during the 10th season of "ER."

*Characters who were pregnant, but the actresses weren't:

Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) was pregnant during the 8th season of "Friends."

Janet (Lindsay Price) was pregnant on Beverly Hills 90210.

Carol (Julianna Margulies) was pregnant during the 6th season of "ER."

Abby (Maura Tierney) was pregnant during the 12th season of "ER."

Sookie (Melissa McCarthy) was pregnant during the 3rd/4th, 5th, and 7th seasons of "Gilmore Girls."

Lane (Keiko Agena) was pregnant during the 7th season of "Gilmore Girls."

Kiersten (Kelly Rowan) was pregnant during the 4th season of "The OC."

Karen (Moira Kelly) was pregnant during the 4th season of "One Tree Hill."

Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti) was pregnant during the 4th season of "One Tree Hill."

I actually started a post like this awhile back, it's interesting to see it posted by someone else and seems to have a better following than mine.

I noticed that Barbara Eden was mentioned but Elizabeth Montgomery wasn't. Two of her pregnancies were written into the show. One was her son in real life who became Tabitha on the show and the other was her daughter in real life who became Adam on the show.
Barbara Eden had to wear extra veils on her harem costume to cover up her pregnancy in part of season 1 of I Dream of Jeannie Episodes 2-15 or something like that, even though near the end you could tell she was pregnant.;) Her son Matthew died several years ago of an accidental drug overdose. :( It was very sad, although she seems to be handling it well. :)

Was Suzanne Somers pregnant on Step By Step, or was it just the character of Carol that was pregnant?

I think hiding pregnancies is just wrong, at least in most cases. I like it when a real-life pregnancy is written into a show. And what really bothers me is "The Cosby show". They made Sondra pregnant, even though actress Sabrina LeBeauf wasn't. And in the same season, Denise wasn't pregnant, even though actress Lisa Bonet was! Why didn't they let Denise have a baby instead of Sondra?

Writers don't always write characters being pregnant simply because the actress is pregnant in real life. It may ruin current or future storylines. It can also ruin the show as a whole.

As for Cosby Show, Phylicia Rashad was pregnant in real-life, but they hid her pregnancy. Lisa Bonet became pregnant by her husband at the time, but the Denise character WAS IN COLLEGE AND NOT MARRIED. Bill didn't want to have a single girl being pregnant or give the impression of his young daugher having premarital sex. Bill wasn't having that on his show. Sondra's character became pregnant (which I thought was unnecessary since she was a newlywed) but the character WAS MARRIED. Sondra having twins I guess was Bill's way of adding new storylines to the show.

My plot idea would be that Denise suddenly got married, and then suddenly said "We had to get married in a hurry, because you see... I'm pregnant!" For a show, that still discussed sex, would that really be too much? Denise did have a friend, who "got pregnant on purpose", and yeah, Denise did get married all by a sudden anyway. So I don't think that would be such a stretch. But this hidden pregnancy wouldn't annoy me this much, if they hadn't had a non-pregnant Sabrina LeBeauf fake a pregnancy in the same season!

No, it's not to much, that is real-life. But in Bill's shows, the kids had to be almost perfect and he was not going to have his young daughter talking abt having premarital sex. He wanted a good, wholesome, family show. I can agree with him on that stance. There are many families who can identify with the Huxtables and not all young college girls have premarital sex. Bill was not happy abt Lisa Bonet getting married at such a young age in real life. Bill didn't want to give out the message that young girls have sex, become pregnant, etc. He wanted to show positive things on his show. Now, if a character WHO WASN'T A HUXTABLE became pregnant, that is ok, because it is not a character who is playing Bill's daughter. Denise's friend becoming pregnant on purpose was supposed to be an example of why becoming pregnant at such a young age can ruin your life. Denise's friend dropped out of college, her boyfriend had to leave college to so he could work full-time. Her parents were going to be the ones to end up carrying the burden of being parents again, by taking care of that baby. The whole episode was trying to give the message DON'T BECOME PREGNANT, YOUR LIFE WILL CHANGE FOREVER.

Because Bill didn't want the Denise character to be married young. That was not the direction the show was going. The Sondra character being married and having babies was already in development when Lisa announced her pregnancy. The episodes of the twins being born were made at least 6 months prior to them being shown on television.
