View Full Version : Miscarriage episode
jenjen 11-30-2007, 11:49 AM I was watching this episode recently, and since I had a couple of miscarriages myself, it was sad...I was just wondering, maybe it was the times, but why didnt' they take Gloria to a hospital? I totally forgot that doctors use to make house calls in the 70's! The end when Archie was sitting with Gloria was very sweet and touching.
catlover79 11-30-2007, 11:52 AM I've never seen that episode, but I'd like to. Which season did it air?
UMfan77 11-30-2007, 12:01 PM I'm pretty sure it's from either the first or second season. It's a very touching episode.
jenjen 11-30-2007, 12:19 PM Yes, It's from the first season. It's called "Gloria's Pregnancy". Watch it, it was a great epsiode!

Thank you! I'll check it out one of these days.

The scenes between him and Gloria were always moving and powerful. Sally Struthers stated many times that those scenes with him were real to her because Carroll O'Connor was like a father to her.
Scoobiedoo30 11-30-2007, 11:07 PM I just saw the episode on DVD and it is from season 1
OH Nuts! 12-01-2007, 01:01 AM It's one of those rare instances when Archie showed some sensitivity
Yes and it was a very touching episode. You see this side of him again in an ep where he visits Edith in the hospital and thinks she has cancer.
Mikado 12-01-2007, 01:04 AM yes, true :cow: yup yup!
Ireneparalegal 12-01-2007, 01:05 AM Doctors didn't make housecalls in the 70's. That was pure television drama. Maybe in the 50's but certainly not the 70's.
In real life, a woman would have to go to the hospital or surely see her doctor immediately as she would need to be seen to make sure no infection would develop. Sometimes a woman needs a "D&C" after a miscarriage to ensure nothing remains in the woman's uterus.
catlover79 12-01-2007, 11:21 AM ^ Very true. My sister had to have one after her miscarriage in 2005. I felt so bad for her; what a terrible time...

Hey Irene! What's shaking?
Yeah, I wondered she was just left to lay in her own bed after a miscarriage, they could have called an ambulance or taxi, and her and Archie still could have had their "moment". Like I said I had a couple and I had to go to the hospital.
Oh, the only time I remember a doctor making a house call to our house was about 1970 or 1971 when my sister had a stomach bug. Just recently my sister said she thought the doctor they sent was rather creepy. Anyway, after that I think they had stopped making housecalls.
Mikado 12-01-2007, 07:00 PM Not to be flippant of anything but, I think the main reason Gloria was recovering in her own bed, at home, was likely that AITF was a brand new show and CBS wasnt willing to give them the kind of budget needed to build a "hospital set" .

That reminds me of Good Times where you see the same walls and chairs used for the recreation room, the hospital (they had a hospital), the bank, the grocery store office, the recruitment office, the welfare office, etc.
Mikado 12-01-2007, 08:47 PM Of course a "set" really IS just 2 or 3 decorated walls!
