View Full Version : Parents: How old were your kids when they stopped believing in Santa?

Chris is 10 and still believes in Santa. My husband and I encourage this. Kids grow up so fast these days, that we want him to hang on to some childhood beliefs.

I know there will come a day that he will stop believing, but I hate to think about that day.

I forced my mom at the age of 8 to tell me there wasn't no santa because it was adding up-lol I was smart enough to know that he could not go to every house all over the world in one night and my mom just came out and said-"OK THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS SANTA!! I was asking too many questions and she just got tired of lying

I never married or had any kids, but I found out when I was about six or
seven--from my nephew (who is about nine months younger than me).
I'll never forget that, after he had told me there was no Santa, he hastily
added: "But there IS an Easter Bunny!"

when I found out I was trying to convince my two yiunger cousins there was no santa clause and when I tried to do it my grandmom would say-"I will knock you out of that chair if you tell them that"

Tell a kid there is no Santa? I can't think of a more spiteful, ignorant thing to do to a child. So many hopes and dreams hinge on that one idea. So many beautiful stories come from that one story.

I, myself, still believe in Santa. And there's not a man alive who could convince me otherwise.

Seriously, you need to start jotting your observations and things you've done down and make a sitcom. You could so out-Seinfeld Seinfeld with some of the things you've said and done

There could be sitcom like Everybody Likes Chris, except the characters are his mom, his grandmom and Solomon. The premise of the show is abt a man who tries to find love online, gripes abt the workplace, chats on a "message board" and how his grandmom and mom play a part in his life. A little sass, a little drama, mix in some Good Times, the Jeffersons, some What's Happening and of course, good ol' Sanford and Son.

Hey, ^^^^ that is MY IDEA!!!! Remember that. ;)

they could even copy the early Sex And The City episodes where Carrie would pose a question on her computer and then random people on the street would answer the question. Couldn't you see Solomon typing "would you eat a pie from the supermarket? on the computer and cutting to a bunch of people on the street answering the question

I was about 10 or 11 and I walked in on my parents playing Santa Claus so that's how I found out for sure although I had my suspicions for a few years before then. They were speechless but I didn't say anything. I went to the bathroom and went right back to bed. We never discussed it. lol

I was 11.
Someone accidentally left a store sticker on one of my presents from Santa and I knew he didn't shop at the store. That was the worst Christmas ever. I think I cried the whole break.. went back to school and learned that my best friend also found out about Santa and then we cried together .
Christmas is still wonderful and my favorite time of year but I do miss believing in Santa. I miss that -can't sleep, trying to catch a peek of Santa, butterflies in the stomach- feeling it brought.
I can't wait to have kids and see that same 'excited look' on their face when Santa comes around.

She asked if she could tell Bella (her little sister) I told her that I don't think that Bella would understand. She said that she had zipped her lips. I kinda think that she has forgotten about the whole Santa thing, so to her it's not a big deal. She has moved on to other things

I think 4 is way too young to tell a child, 9 or 10 is the reasonable age to tell them. If a 5 year old knows Santa isn't real, that spoils a lot of magic for them that those of us had that seriously believed in such a thing

yeah, i think around 10 or 11 is a good time. any younger takes a lot of the magic away, and any older then 10 or 11, they'll probably find out for themselves.

Why tell them? Most people find out for themselves anyway, it gets obvious that there is none after a while. When i found out, i didn't care, i was just as happy knowing my parents were buying my presents. Kids dont care most of the time, just as long as kids are getting presents they are happy. Who cares who gives them? lol

exactly. By the time I found out I didn't care anymore as long as I got presents but I wouldn't have wanted anyone to tell me when I was younger. That feeling you get when you're a child waiting for Christmas morning to see what Santa brought you is really a special feeling. Once it's gone you can't get it back. That is really Santa Claus...it doesn't matter if he's real because the spirit of Christmas is real and what he stands for is real.

I agree, one thing I noticed was when I was in school, the second graders who didn't believe in Santa were far more cynical than those who still believed for a year or two longer.
