I'm leading a class discussion on television credit sequences and must analyze the use of image, text and sound in the opening credits (i'm going to use family matters). I've disscussed the theme song and what its underlying message is, i've also discussed the characters that were introduced and their props/clothing as means to portray their character. Does anyone have anything else they could contribute to my discussion. What exactly are the producers trying to convey through their credit sequence (which is in essence a mini-film of the show).

thanks a lot for your thoughts.

That sounds fun! I think that the scenes in their credits show their intersts/ what they do. Intersts would be Judy playing with a doll house, Urkel playing the accordion, Harriet playing the piano, Mother Winslow reading the Rolling Stone (showing her character's personality), Laura listening to music, and Eddie fixing his car. The ones that show off their jobs would be Carl walks in with his police uniform on, Laura behing the counter at Rachel's Place and Rachel putting a menu on a table at Rachel's Place. Others just show the character's personality like the family trying to keep Urkel from coming in, and Waldo getting hit with a basketball and looking around. The message was possibly that when days pass, it's the love of you family that matters. It was sort of clever how they made it look like the credits start in the morning, with the family eating breakfast and showing cast credits, then mid-day showing them riding bikes and scenes from various episodes representing how they spent their day, then at th end the family's sitting happy in the living room, and they zoom out of the house, revealing it's dusk, sort of saying that was an entire day. If you need to see the theme song I posted a ton of them here on this board under Family Matters Theme Songs!

Oh, and Mother Winslow with a tennis racket showed a hobby, and Eddie bagging groceries showed off his job.
