...do you think someone else could have better played the role? I can't really think of anyone - it's hard to see Elizabeth Montgomery with an actor other than Dick York.

View Full Version : For those that don't like Dick Sargents role as Darrin.... clj2 11-25-2007, 02:41 PM ...do you think someone else could have better played the role? I can't really think of anyone - it's hard to see Elizabeth Montgomery with an actor other than Dick York. catlover79 11-25-2007, 02:42 PM I agree. To me, the ONLY Samantha and Darrin are Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York. They were perfect in the roles and the chemistry they had was off the charts!! Enough said. :D Darrin1Fan 11-25-2007, 03:25 PM I totally agree with both of u. There is no other Darrin. Period. Although I believe Jim Carrey would have been amazing in the movie. If there has to be another Darrin, he's the next best thing. How selfish of him not to have been available to have replaced Dick York at the time ;) Mikado 11-25-2007, 04:24 PM As far as it goes, I think Dick York is the ONLY TRUE Darrin (DS never did it for me, NO chemistry)...However, if they ever made a TRUE remake, I'd want Crispen Glover in the role.....he LOOKS like a young Dick York, and even has the same rubber face!! :) AB 11-25-2007, 04:50 PM It would have been hard to find anyone that could take his place, his reactions to the witchcraft and his chemistry with EM were just one of a kind. catlover79 11-25-2007, 06:42 PM As far as it goes, I think Dick York is the ONLY TRUE Darrin (DS never did it for me, NO chemistry)...However, if they ever made a TRUE remake, I'd want Crispen Glover in the role.....he LOOKS like a young Dick York, and even has the same rubber face!! :) He DOES look like a young Dick York - wow!! Mikado 11-25-2007, 06:45 PM He DOES look like a young Dick York - wow!! yup, i noticed it the first time I saw "Back to the future" :cow: yupyup! OH Nuts! 11-25-2007, 07:27 PM ...do you think someone else could have better played the role? I can't really think of anyone - it's hard to see Elizabeth Montgomery with an actor other than Dick York. I agree. Dick York was perfect as Darrin. And if something works you don't fix it. tv star collector 11-25-2007, 07:59 PM I don't know how many people are aware of the reason Dick York had to leave BEWITCHED, so I am going to post this response (and here I quote Herbie J. Pilato's "THE BEWITCHED BOOK" (1992)): "When Dick York was filming 'They Came to Cordura' with Gary Cooper in 1959, York and several other actors were doing a scene that required them to lift a railroad handcar. At one point, the director yelled 'Cut!' and everyone but York let go. The car fell on him, wrenching his spine and tearing the muscles around it. His pain continued on BEWITCHED, later escalating, and he had to be replaced by Dick Sargent as Darrin in 1969. "'We toyed with the idea of having Endora change Darrin's looks,' says Bill Asher, 'but then we'd have a wall between Endora and Samantha.' And as Elizabeth adds, 'Samantha would never have put up with that. It wouldn't have been fair to the characters or the actors--and the audience would have hated it.' "Dick York, however, feels 'they should have changed the character completely ... Darrin should have been killed off or he and Samantha should have gotten a divorce.' Yet Bill Asher argues differently. "'It was so contrary to what the show was all about,' he says. 'How could you break up a love story, and start it with somebody else? It just wouldn't work. Darrin had to be so special that he'd be the only mortal that any witch, specifically Samantha, could be involved with. We just couldn't mess that up.'" Mikado 11-25-2007, 08:14 PM I knew hed had his back seriously hurt while filming a movie, but Id never heard the details, how awful! catlover79 11-25-2007, 09:06 PM I knew hed had his back seriously hurt while filming a movie, but Id never heard the details, how awful! Mikey, you should check out Dick York's posthumously pubished memoir, The Seesaw Girl and Me. He goes into much more detail about the back injury that eventually ruined his career. Here's the website: http://newpathpress.com Mikado 11-25-2007, 09:19 PM I have to say that I've rarely, if ever, heard reviewers become quite as emotional as they seem to have, for this book! comedyfreak 11-28-2007, 07:03 AM As far as it goes, I think Dick York is the ONLY TRUE Darrin (DS never did it for me, NO chemistry)...However, if they ever made a TRUE remake, I'd want Crispen Glover in the role.....he LOOKS like a young Dick York, and even has the same rubber face!! :) My choice is Jim Carey he looks more like Dick York, check out Liar, Liar and you'll see the resemblence. The movie itself is almost like an episode of Bewitched. Darrin1Fan 11-28-2007, 06:01 PM I totally agree comedyfreak - Jim Carrey is the only actor worthy of being a close second to Dick York. Especially in the area of facial expressions. My choice as a good example of Carrey's 'Darrin-like' performance would also be Liar Liar - great minds think alike!!! comedyfreak 11-29-2007, 05:33 AM Dat's right, LOL. |
