View Full Version : Bad news for GAB on DVD
TV_Fan 11-22-2007, 05:06 PM According to tsod VEI has no plans at this time to continue GAB sets. They didn't say it's out of the question, but with no plans now it doesn't look good. Apprently the sets didn't sell as well as we thought. I guess Kate & Allie is a better selling show than GAB. This really sucks. As disappointing as that news is at this point, I'm still holding out hope that Season 3 of GAB! will be released sometime in 2008. I guess at this point, we will just have to keep e-mailing VEI, pleading with them to continue releasing the remaining 4 seasons of GAB! As for the sales of Season 2, amazon.ca had to reorder more copies of Season 2 of GAB! at least twice, so I wouldn't exactly call the sales lackluster. However, I have a feeling that the majority of the orders for Season 2 of GAB! came from the US, and that perhaps, the execs at VEI felt that the sales of Season 2 from Canada were disappointing. That may be a reason why they have held off on releasing Season 3 of GAB!. In any event, I'm not giving up hope for the releases of the remaining seasons of GAB!.
TV_Fan 11-22-2007, 11:37 PM I'm not giving up hope either. The post at tsod said they didn't come right out and say that they gave up on or abandon it, they just have no plans right now.
As much as I'd like to think the set sold well, I guess amazon is only one outlet. The set may have sold very poorly in stores, which would probably account for most sales. I think if the sets did as well as we think they did, VEI would be rushing to get more seasons out. I will also keep emailing VEI and pestering them to continue sets. I'm still optimistic. There's also the chance that if Charles in Charge does well for Arts Alliance, they may want to license GAB for here in the US. I think we also need to keep emailing them.
This just really irritates me that a quality show has problems getting released, when garbage reality shows and shows that last half a season but just aired have no problems getting released.
Robert 13 11-24-2007, 07:52 PM VERY disappointing! VEI has lost their place as one of my favorite studios to release dvds. pissed:
Smartboy 01-27-2008, 07:26 PM It seems that after this thread went up, the posts almost came to a screeching halt! I have tried "dozens" of times to stimulate some conversation about this show but have had virtually "no" success! The only explanation that I can think of is that, because of the bad news that this post brought, people wanted to get their minds off the fact that this show ever existed. "Very" sad! In any event, I am bringing this thread to the top of the pile in hopes of regenerating some conversation on the topic. I will try to check in later tonight and see if there are any responses. Take care folks!
Richee 01-28-2008, 01:17 AM What they should do is go ahead and release the last four seasons as one package.
I don't know how Kate and Alley sold more than Gimme a Break. I've met a few people who loved, and even bought Gimme a Break on DVD. I have yet to run across anyone in person who has purchased Kate and Alley on DVD.
In any case, they should go ahead and put the last four into one package. It may be a lot of discs, about 12, but it would be worth it in the end.. because after the 4th season set, not many people will want to buy the last two seasons anyways.
The show kind of lost it's charm after the 4th season. Die-hard fans like us WOULD buy the last two seasons, but other people would probably pass.
Not only that, but they wouldn't have to spend a lot of money on different packages for each sets, and setting release dates in the future. They could go ahead and release them all now.. and be done with it.
It would just suck to release two seasons of a TV show, then just stop.
I hope they change their minds.
Robert 13 01-28-2008, 10:58 AM I definitely haven't forgotten about Gimme a Break! It remains one of my most-beloved shows of all-time. I haven't seen episodes passed season 2 in a long time apart from the few they included in the marathon when Season 1 was released. I'd love to see some of the old ones I haven't seen in over a decade. Hopefully, VEI will decide it is worth it afterall to continue releasing the series on dvd. Not sure why they decided against it since Season 2 sold relatively well. It definitely didn't flop in sales. But they have also been slow in releasing anything lately. TVshowsondvd.com hasn't had news from VEI in quite a while. And when they do have news it's about plans, nothing concrete, no scheduled release date. They always say "sometime later". They're losing their target consumers.
TV_Fan 01-28-2008, 07:01 PM I certainly haven't forgotten about GAB and am still holding out hope that SOMEONE will continue to release the seasons. I for one would buy all of them if they were released.
I started a thread over at Shout! Factory's forums hoping they at least might pick it up here in the States. We haven't heard anything from Arts Alliance so who knows. Anyway, please if you want more seasons post a short message on the thread at Shout Factory (I know they read it):

Robert 13 01-29-2008, 10:33 AM Great idea! I just posted a message showing my interest. I hope they see the demand in this show. It shouldn't be too expensive to license out, should it? I think they would make a profit on it. Shout! does a great job at getting their product out there. I think if they took this show on, we would see Seasons 3 & 4 in no time. :)

I don't think it would be too expensive for them licensing wise. Nell did sing a lot of songs in later seasons, but Shout! is usualyl good with including music, and covers are almost always cheaper to license then the original recording.
Smartboy 01-30-2008, 01:30 AM I am "very" happy to "finely" see some more conversation regarding this series! I think some of your ideas for future DVDs are "very" interesting! I would say that season three is the remaining season that I would most like to see come out. This is mainly because of the episode known as "Samantha's Protest" which I have posted about on a bunch of occasions. If season four ever comes out, I mind be willing to buy that one too. I even found some funny lines and situations in season five. However, season six is where I draw the line! I remember this season being just about the most forced and artificial form of entertainment that ever was! Not that I have anything against Rosie O'Donnal, but I think that her character did nothing for the show. Neither did that of Mathew Lawrance. In any event, within the next couple of hours, I plan on visiting the official site of Lauri Hendler as well as the "Gimme a Break!" section of "Jump the Shark". Maybe I will get lucky and there will be some interesting messages for me to respond to in one of these places!
Robert 13 01-30-2008, 10:37 AM I would definitely buy the entire series of GAB! I am fond of the later years as I watched them after school growing up. I still laughed at the Nell and Addy adventures even though the show changed. One episode that I love is when Nell tries to impress her boss (and avoid being fired) by setting Joey up on a play date with his daughter. Joey ends up becoming a "gigolo" and accepting expensive gifts from the girl. Nell's reaction is what makes this episode classic. When she goes to the house to drag Joey away, the maid tries to announce her and she says "I don't need to be announced. I'll announce myself. I'M HERE!" I know it's a long shot but I hope we get up to Season 6 for this episode alone.
Barrybgb 01-30-2008, 07:35 PM Gimme A Break! was a favorite of mine growing up in the 80's. So many great 80's shows, and GAB is definitley one of them. They haven't aired the show in reruns here since the early 90's. When the first DVD came out, I was ecstatic!. I got it and was instantly taken back to a wonderful time and era. It was so much fun seeing this show again. I seriously hope they get more seasons out on DVD soon. I would love to continue this wonderful trip down memory lane. :)
