View Full Version : Enough with the "game-style" threads...
SBTB Geek 11-18-2007, 11:44 PM ...does anyone else agree? I think it's ruining the forum. I used to frequent this place before those threads began to take over the entire board! :o
Btw, I'm talking about those "name a song...," etc. type threads.

What's it hurting? There are several of us that enjoy these and similar games are found throughout the board. I personally see no problem with it but if TJ does then all he has to do is say so. I thought this board was a place to have fun but how can you if one person doesn't like what's being posted?
Since you are a Moderator, I have no doubt that most of your cohorts will agree with you and if they do then so be it. We've been playing these games for quite awhile so why all of a sudden is it an issue? The possibility of no longer allowing these games hardly seems fair but I think a reasonable compromise would be to post them in the Chit-Chat Games forum from now on.
Dean Winchester 11-19-2007, 12:47 AM I agree to an extent, I would rather have actual music discussions than naming a song with ____ in it (I almost considered being a dick awhile back and starting a "songs that have a letter in it's title" thread to see if anyone would see the sarcasm in it or actually go along with it, rofl). I think maybe there should be a separate subforum for music games since it's not hurting anyone, tho I personally prefer reading discussions about artists and songs and what the artists mean to you, etc...
Mikado 11-19-2007, 12:48 AM I dont think they detract from the other threads, if nothing else, game threads get people to take a look at the different boards ; it's like a convertible in a show room of sedans, if the vert gets you in the door, then you can check out the other models, while you're there! I like playing games, but, i do other things too, whats wrong with a little variety?
catlover79 11-19-2007, 12:54 AM I think those threads are fun! Don't read those posts if you don't like them. Why is it ruining the forum??

well, it doesn't really "ruin" the forum so much, but I agree with SBTB to an extent. It does get annoying when the only music threads getting any action are "songs with ____ in the title" type threads when I would definately love more actual music discussion instead of games

Well, theres nothing stopping you from making those threads, why take away something I enjoy, when theres room for both?
catlover79 11-19-2007, 01:05 AM Maybe make a separate forum for "music trivia" and everyone would be happy.

You mean to say that you cannot participate in any music discussions if the game threads are present? It would seem logical to think that people are going to post in the threads that interest them the most. If you prefer to have the discussions you spoke of then that's fine but the game threads aren't preventing you or anyone else from doing so.
Mikado 11-19-2007, 01:19 AM :yeahthat Exactly what I'm saying....if you want the more serious threads, then make them and post in them; but dont take away game threads just cause you dont like them....live and let live

I have made those threads in here, and nobody will reply to them (except for ones that weren't in the best light about Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears, two people who are more "celebrities" than actual recording artists at this point) but make a "songs that had 'THE' in the title" and the board goes ape****. So yea, it does tick me off a bit. I made two well-thought out threads about Annie Lennox and Scissor Sisters in here before (with YouTube links and everything) and nobody replied to them, but typical "name a song that has a vowel in the title" posts get tons of replies, and I personally would rather have a conversation with people about my favorite artists or their favorite artists moreso than naming a song which has a color in it.

I've started several threads and got no replies but I sure as hell didn't blame it on other topics within those forums. If someone wants to reply to a topic you started they'll do so regardless of whether the game threads are present or not.
Mikado 11-19-2007, 01:50 AM ^^^Exactly, and, if they dont want to reply to your serious threads, taking the games off the board, wont make any difference.

Games related to music could logically go into the Music or Games forum. Zoneboys's suggestion is a good one. But IMO I really don't see how having games related to music in the music forum prevents other types of threads.

I can appreciate your frustration when a well-thought thread, designed to stimulate serious discussion ends up lying flat. I've had that experience on a sitcom bd that unfortunately stays very slow. Also, you never know, someone may come along down the road, respond to your thread, and really get it going.
Unfortunately, some good things just never seem to get of the ground. Why is a mystery to me. I would have thought your threads would eagerly attract other serious fans.
Regarding the games, I and many others seem to enjoy them. They are clearly popular, meaning they have a place. Where is up for grabs.
Zoneboy 11-19-2007, 02:17 AM Someone may come along down the road, respond to your thread, and then really get it going.
Exactly and a prime example of that is the anagram game I started over a year ago last August. I didn't get any replies so I thought nobody was interested in playing. I had actually forgotten about it until Rich made the first reply over a year later and now there's currently 126 replies to it.

I sure can understand your frustration. You are a music lover and a music buff, looking for stimulating conversation. I think you are bound to have fewer replies no matter what because of that, because it's a topic users have to have some interest, knowledge or opinion about, whereas the board goes "ape***" for the song title threads because every single person on the boards can enjoy and respond to that (and some find it fun), so it's bound to get more replies. Just think if every person on the boards did respond to it! I personally don't mind the game threads, but I will tell you the one I don't for the life of me understand the fascination of is that "how many posts does the person above you have?" in another board. It has something like 1200 replies....??????

OH Nuts! 11-19-2007, 09:04 AM What about The What Time Is It game?
IMO, sometimes things get carried away. But, different strokes for different folks and apparently a lot of people like that particular game. However, it is one of the games I don't play.
Also when I play any of the games, I make a personal ground rule for myself never to skip a letter like q,x or z. If I can't think of an answer I look one up on the Internet and learn something new.

IMO what is cool about this particular game is that it can give you a historical record of your post counts. Once I realized this, the game is actually quite simple...and clever.
Janice 11-20-2007, 07:26 PM I agree somewhat, and think it would be a good idea to move them to the Game board, but that's TJ's call. They can be fun, and I've made some of the threads myself. The problem is the overkill. They don't hinder discussion of music, but they certainly take up a lot of space. It happens with a lot of trends. For a while on Chit Chat, it looked like The Enquirer or The Globe, just one crazy story after another. If a headline is too nasty these days, I just pitch it. Most everything is fine, in moderation. There just seems to always be a few members who overdo everything. Just like in regular life.

I really shouldn't talk since I used to play that game a few years ago. It was just something I did because I was bored. I guess it beat just looking at empty threads.

Before all those threads came up, there was hardly any activity on this board. The rare music news threads received some attention, but other than that, nothing really to look at. So, anything that brings attention to this board, activity, etc. is ok in my book, as long as people enjoy it, have fun with it and don't find it offensive.;)

There are lots of active topics. I just hate seeing them constantly getting pushed down. Games really do belong on the Game forum, although not so sure those are classified as games.

It'd be nice if it were an even mix, unfortunately this is not how things have seemed to turn out.
One of my frustrations is I'd love to have serious threads abt the shows I really like and am knowledgeable abt. But when I've tried to stimulate discussion on a couple of bds, the efforts fell flat. So now I pretty much post on bds where I'm fairly knowledgeable, eager to learn more, and where there are several lively and knowledgeable fans (I Love Lucy, Bewitched)
Mikado 11-25-2007, 02:01 AM Read, and you'll know.
I did read, and i dont agree. If people dont want to answer the"serious" threads, the people who like fun music threads shouldnt be punished; there's room for all sorts of music threads, and everyone should have the right to make and answer the threads they like, so long as no one is hurt by them.
Ireneparalegal 11-25-2007, 02:30 PM I see this issue as this:
With all the game style threads, it pushes the music threads (topics abt music, singers, etc) down or even pushes them to the next page. By this happening, posters who look at the music board, only see game threads and don't bother to check the next page or are just instantly turned away from the music board completely. I will admit, I have missed some threads on topics I would love to post/chat abt but missed it simply because it got pushed down. I sometimes take the time to search and read through. I also am not patient at times to do that. I am sure that is the case with some posters.
I feel bad for those who take the time to make a thread and feel it doesn't get noticed or any activity.
Maybe this topic can be made into a thread for the suggestions board and let TJ look at it and see if it warrants any change.
I still say though the games threads bring activity to the board and those who like music enough to play the games may actually notice or take the time to check out the other topics.
Janice 11-25-2007, 03:09 PM I did read, and i dont agree. Nobody wants anyone to be punished. The issue is the overkill of it all, which seems to have stopped since this thread. When every day, those threads keep popping up, one after the other, it gets ridiculous. The threads are fine, and I've made them myself. It's when there are 10 or 12 going, on top of the front page, that it gets out of control. They do have a game quality to them, and this isn't a game forum. It's a music forum.

No, I realize members enjoy them. They are fun. Issues such as this aren't new. There was a time when TJ put a limit on someone who posted those "Lists", the kind you get in e:mails. The person was posting them on a few different boards, but was instructed to limited it to two a day, on one board.
Another time, TJ issued a moratorium on those over-the-top headline bloodbath style stories. The place was turning into bizarro story central, lol. I'm glad the bonehead phase died down. Now, it will be fun to read a few, as opposed to so many being on CC. Moderation, the key to almost everything in life. Almost. ;)

Music is a broad enough topic to go either in Games or Music--both make sense logically. But if placing music based games in Games would encourage more serious discussions in Music, then it would seem Games to me too.
Games related to specific Sitcom shows s/b on the Sitcom's bd though, IMO.

I agree with you Janice. I don't want to ruin anybody's fun and I know these games are a lot better than the ones that are on the games board but the whole reason TJ moved the games board off of the new topic thread was so it wouldn't clog up the board. It really does remind me of a few years ago when the games were clogging up the boards. I used to play those games sometimes too like the time game... but TJ was right to move them because they started taking up too much space. When I go down the board to look for threads these days the games are mostly what I see.
