View Full Version : Should TVLAND Show Variety Shows Instead of Movies ???
ComedyGuy 11-17-2007, 08:20 PM I think TVLAND should STOP with the movies and go back to their original format and even have variety shows like. . . . . . .
Carol Burnett
Flip Wilson
Abbott & Costello
The Jackie Gleason show
Didn't Bob Hope have a variety show ???
All of these shows would be awesome to watch

I'd love it if TVLand would air some good variety shows on Saturday nights. Goodlife TV used to do it..."Tony Orlando and Dawn" was my favorite, but I also liked "The Leslie Uggams Show" and "Jimmy Durante and the Lennon Sisters."

I forgot to add Tony Orlando and Dawn. Still would like to see the ep when Jimmy Walker was a guest in the summer of 74
gidgetgrape 11-17-2007, 09:53 PM Yes, I would like to see variety shows, but I don't think that's going to happen any time soon.
TV LAND Turns to Movies to Save Network (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/205068/tv_land_turns_to_movies_to_save_network.html)
You know what would be cool? A channel that aired nothing but comedy/variety and musical shows from the 1960s-1970s. I fricken LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE watching the classic 70s "Soul Train" reruns that they air in syndication now. I first caught them in January and they were in the mid-70s, then they aired a lot of the late 80s episodes, which I didn't like, but now they're back in the early-mid 1970s and I love them. They don't air all the episodes though. As a matter of fact, Solomon, I think you'd be interested in the episode that aired today...had Ralph Carter singing a couple of songs.
But yeah, they could air vintage ST from the 1970s, along with "Midnight Special" and "American Bandstand." And they'd have a ****load of comedy/variety that they could air...Flip, Carol, Sonny and Cher, Tony Orlando and Dawn, Donny and Marie...
Mr. Television 11-17-2007, 10:12 PM I would love to see it but I doubt it will happen. TV Land sucks anymore. They sold out. When you give up what you were created for and start airing movies, maybe it's time you did go out of business.
Ireneparalegal 11-17-2007, 10:14 PM I would love the variety shows. Donny & Marie, Cher, Sonny & Cher, etc.
If TVland is airing movies to try and save the network, they went in THE WRONG DIRECTION. How abt airing OLD SHOWS WE HAVEN'T SEEN IN YEARS TVLAND? Duh!!!!!

Thanx Gidgetgrape:
Cable network, TV LAND, has committed to hosting a movie night. After 11 years on the air the inclusion of movies is an attempt to save the channel from failure.
On April 29th 1996 a new cable channel aired named TV LAND. TV Land, owned by MTV Networks, is programmed with re-run shows mainly from the 50's, 60's, 70's and a few from the 80's. Such shows consist of classics like: I Love Lucy, Gunsmoke, The Andy Griffith Show, Green Acres, The Aadams Family, Knight Rider, and many more. However what was once an interesting concept quickly became a consistent low score in the ratings.
"Friday Night Movies" is the title for this movie night event and will kick of this month. The first batch of movies will be shown in succession and consist of films such as: White Men Can't Jump, Weekend at Bernies, and Basic Instinct. Such titles may seem odd to fans of the network who tune in for their classic re-runs only to find Sharon Stone killing people with an ice pick. However, this same group of people apparently isn't large enough or dedicated enough to help the dropping percentages that the Nielsens rating system tracks. Future movies to be aired will be: Pleasantville, Caddyshack, National Lampoons Vacation, The Blues Brothers, and Beetlejuice.
Tv Land will not be paying out too much money to air these movies, due to the fact that most are older titles that have already been circulated through other cable networks. The movies will only be available to Tv Land for a short period of time, sometimes mere weeks, which will also cut the costs for obtaining airing rights. Films from all of the major studios have been purchased, however Tv Land will only be looking for titles that are not in their first run on cable networks.
Tv Land has committed to the "Friday Night Movies" concept until the year 2010. The channel will combine this with the continuous production of some original specials, similar to the broadcasting styles of MTV and VH1, as well allowing the airing of some even newer shows. As the years move along more and more shows may become potential candidates for "classic television", however the original classics that came along with Tv Land when it first premiered will continue to be the network staples.
Tv Land's predicament goes to show that the past has to change to keep up with the times. The network ultimately hopes to gain its audience back with new programming and possibly nab some new viewers who will fall in love with the classic television show line-up as well.
bingbangbaby 11-17-2007, 10:16 PM I really think people would love that...if they want to "save the network" anyway. I think the problem with TVLand is that it's just simply not what it used to be...they play too many looooong stretches of one show forcing viewers to turn the channel and not come back for hours, if at all, if they don't like that show, and they don't have the variety they used to either, once again forcing people to turn the channel. And they're doing the same thing with the movies...overplaying them to the point that I turn the channel. I know it's more complicated than just simply airing different shows, but it's what I think, anyway.
Mr. Television 11-17-2007, 10:19 PM What I want is a classic channel like TCM that instead shows classic television shows commercial free. In between the shows they can have classic commercials. And I'd want all forms of tv shows, sitcoms, variety shows, dramas and no shows after the 1980's.
bingbangbaby 11-17-2007, 10:20 PM You know what else I'd love to be able to see? Some old specials too. Wouldn't it be great to be able to see, say, The Academy Awards from like 1972 or something? :)
catlover79 11-17-2007, 10:21 PM The only movies they should show are TV show reunion movies!! None of this Crocodile Dundee 2 crap!!! Remember the Fandemonium weekends? Sigh...
bingbangbaby 11-17-2007, 10:24 PM I saw an ad too that "Just Shoot Me" is coming to TVLand in January. Nothing against that show, but since when do they show anything that isn't at least 20 years old? Now they're just making themselves just like every other station except without the variety. No wonder they're failing.

If they want to show movies then they should show classic tv movies like The Burning Bed or The Boy in the Plastic Bubble with John Travolta. Theatrical movies have no place on that network.

I can't stand Just Shoot Me. Scrubs is coming soon too.
Ireneparalegal 11-17-2007, 10:26 PM I agree Sonny. Those are great.
What abt those 70's movies like Having Babies, that featured 70's stars or those movies of the week that usually dealt with some hot issue like wife abuse. There was a movie with Sally Struthers where she was abused.

You mean THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL. Midnight Express was a movie.
catlover79 11-17-2007, 10:27 PM ^ Or they could show Liz Montgomery's post-Bewitched TV movies. I heard where she was the "first queen of the TV movies".
bingbangbaby 11-17-2007, 10:30 PM If they want to show movies then they should show classic tv movies like The Burning Bed or The Boy in the Plastic Bubble with John Travolta. Theatrical movies have no place on that network.
Actually they did do that when they first started this "Movie Land" business. They showed a bunch of made for TV movies: The Boy in the Plastic Bubble, Sybill, Brian's Song, The Day After, and a few others. I did really enjoy that.
Mr. Television 11-17-2007, 10:30 PM They could show the Johnny Cash Show. I remember his summer show in the 70's but he had one in the late 60's I'd love to see. And they are putting a best of.....out on DVD so the timing is right.
Ireneparalegal 11-17-2007, 10:33 PM Did you all read the article (link) that Gidgetgrape provided? I posted the article. It states it is cheap for TVLand to acquire the movies they air. Also, they blame the very fans of the old shows for the lack of ratings. WTF???
catlover79 11-17-2007, 10:35 PM Well, it's pretty hard for the old shows to get high ratings when they are stuck in the 12-6 am timeslots!!

Yea I read it. Total baloney. They're using the same excuse all the other channels use for destroying their programing. AMC claimed their viewers were too old. What do they know. I watched that channel for years when I was in my 20's and now the channel is total garbage. I wish I could take it off my cable.
Mr. Television 11-17-2007, 10:39 PM Well, it's pretty hard for the old shows to get high ratings when they are stuck in the 12-6 am timeslots!!
and they air the same shows. I wish they would only air shows once or twice a day. When I see a marathon of them I don't watch. It seems to be popular on a lot of channels these days.
Ireneparalegal 11-17-2007, 10:39 PM Sonny & Monika, you both hit it on the head.
Mr. Television 11-17-2007, 10:40 PM Sonny & Monika, you both hit it on the head.
I wish we all were running TV Land.
catlover79 11-17-2007, 10:41 PM I also think TV Land can't compete with many of the old shows out on DVD now. The DVDs are commercial free and (mostly) unedited, plus you can buy all the seasons you like and watch whenever you want. So is it any wonder why TV Land's ratings are in the toilet??
Mr. Television 11-17-2007, 10:42 PM and start the shows at the top of the hour. I don't know if TV Land still does it late at night but when I watch a show at midnight I don't want to have to wait till 12:10.
Ireneparalegal 11-17-2007, 10:44 PM I wish we all were running TV Land.
Hell, one of us could do a better job than those bozos over there. I can imagine all three of us running that station?
And they do still air their late programming OFF THE HOUR. Anyone up for The Jeffersons at 20 past the hour?
catlover79 11-17-2007, 10:46 PM ^ Other than Solomon?? I don't think so.
Dean Winchester 11-17-2007, 11:28 PM what is the point of the movies? They've aired some decent movies, but we have AMC, Encore (and it's 50 offspring) and countless other channels that show the hit movies of the 70's and 80's as is. I loved the movie Beaches, but what is the point of it being on TV Land, unless they're trying to tie Mayim Bialik on Blossom as it being relevant to a classic TV station.
You mean THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL. Midnight Express was a movie.
Yeah, that's what I meant. I went back and edited it...always did confuse those two titles lol
I agree with everybody else...TVLand is just not at all what it used to be. Late 1990s, I was a little kid and I wanted nothing more than TVLand. My cousins in another city had it and everytime I visited them, I'd spend most of my time camped out in front of the TV. Finally got it in 2001 and it was great for about two and a half years. It started to turn sour, and then it got really bad in around early 2005. The last time I truly enjoyed something TVLand did was in December 2006, for the "That Girl" marathon.
I don't know what to say. I think that one channel is just no longer enough to air everything that everybody wants to see. There's always gonna be somebody unhappy. I'd like to have specialty channels that are devoted to only one genre/era, but at the same time, I miss the idea of watching something like "All in the Family" followed by "Bewitched" followed by "Charlie's Angels" followed by "Carol Burnett and Friends." Having a wide variety of programming on one channel was one of the things that I liked about TVLand in the first place.

I agree.
I honestly think TV Land should place a moratorium on all shows completed on DVD (Lucy, Three's Company, Andy Griffith, Good Times, Sanford And Son, Star Trek, MASH, etc...) because you can buy the sets whenever you want, or rent them from Netflix. TV Land is supposed to cater to fans of TV from the 50's-80's.... those are the people who own every season of their fave shows. TV Land should place those shows which are completed on DVD on moratorium and give more respect to the shows that either are only partly into the DVD's or not released on DVD at all. Do you think someone who owns all 11 seasons of MASH on DVD wants to watch it on TV Land when they have all the sets on DVD? I doubt it.... they'd wanna watch something they can't legitimately purchase a complete series of.
I agree.

Personally, I don't think that that would be a good idea. It'd be ideal, definitely, but you can't just stop airing something simply because its fans "should" have all of it on DVD. There are many who can't afford it, and I'm sure that there are older audiences who don't really have an interest in learning how to use DVD players and all of that. It's so much easier for grandma and grandpa to just turn the TV on at a certain time to watch their favorite episodes of Lucy or Andy.
And I hate to use such a cliched cliche...but I'm trying to make a point lol
Dean Winchester 11-18-2007, 08:02 PM I see what you mean, but there are so many classic shows out there that aren't completed on DVD that are nowhere to be found in syndication, while played out series like Lucy, Andy and MASH are on TV Land numerous times a day, when all three of those shows have been finished on DVD and are available in complete series packages. I think TV Land should be a little more fair to the shows that you can't automatically rush over to Amazon and order every season for.

Right. I totally agree. Now that I think about it, most of the shows I want to see are barely out on DVD or not out at all. Who do you have to flirt with around here to get Dynasty, Knots Landing, Falcon Crest, and Flamingo Road on a widespread cable net?!
ComedyGuy 11-20-2007, 03:32 PM You know what would be cool? A channel that aired nothing but comedy/variety and musical shows from the 1960s-1970s.
We can called it VSC or TVSC ==> The Variety Show Channel
or
Variety Show Central
or
VSN ==> Variety Show Network

Make that the 4 of us. . . . . . .
I forgot about the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts
Those would be awsesome to watch and when I was in NETFLIX they didn't carry them as I would have dubbed them in a second.
treky 11-20-2007, 05:23 PM unfortunetaly; I doubt very, very, very, much that TV LAND will EVER go back to their old days. Shame! To quote Jed Clammpett "PITIFUL...JUST PITIFUL"!

I agree, TV Land's objective every year is to do something they haven't done before

That's why Just Shoot Me and Scrubs are coming soon. lol
