Chapter 1

Jo Bonner was going to kill whoever was calling. It was three o’clock in the morning, she had just gone back to bed from Rikki’s two o’clock feeding fifteen minutes earlier. She hadn’t gotten a good night’s sleep since the day she brought her now nine-month-old daughter home. It wasn’t easy taking care of a two-year-old and an infant, and now someone was waking her up only four and a half hours before the first of her children would stir. Chucky hadn’t gotten a good night’s sleep last night, so he was going to be particularly grumpy when he woke up. Charles Albert Bonner had been the ring bearer at his Aunt Blair's wedding the night before, which meant that he had been allowed to stay up late. She answered the phone, before it woke the baby. She instantly regretted her prior anger, it was Cliff and he didn’t sound too good.

Jo: Cliff, what’s wrong? Aren’t you supposed to be on your honeymoon?

Cliff: Jo, there’s been an accident.

Jo: WHAT!

Cliff couldn’t keep the tears in.

Cliff: We were on our way up to Maine, and it was raining; when all of the sudden the car skid off the road. Blair’s hurt pretty bad. She’s at St. Anne‘s in Manhattan. She was air lifted here because the hospital in Maine didn’t think that they could handle her injuries.

Jo: Cliff, give me a couple of hours. It’s an hour and a half from Peekskill to Manhattan, and I need about half an hour to find someone to stay with kids seeing as Rick’s touring right now.

Jo bundled up her children, and took them over to Casey’s house. It was the only place that she could take them. She had called Natalie, who insisted on going to the hospital. She then called Tootie, who also insisted on going to the hospital. Mrs. G. had been the same story, so she called the only person who wouldn’t even think of showing up at the hospital. Casey was Rick’s best friend, and Blair’s ex-boyfriend. He had no reason to be there. She rang the doorbell and waited, Casey opened it within minutes.

Casey: Hey, Jo. Is it bad?

Jo: They think so.

Casey: Well then, hand over Chucky and Erica Marie. You better go.

Jo: Thanks, Casey.

Jo went from Casey’s house to pick up Mrs. Garrett. Tootie and Jeff were going to take their kids over to Natalie and Snake’s house. As soon as everyone was settled, they’d head for the hospital.

Exactly two hours later Jo rushed into the emergency room at St. Anne’s. The second that she saw Cliff sitting there in the waiting room, she knew that it was really bad. She felt her heart drop, she wasn’t ready to lose her best friend. Blair had to make it, she just had to make it.

Thanks for all of the replies. This one is going to be a weekly chapter. I don't want to abandon " The Fact of Life " so I have to let that one get all my free time during the week. " Labor of Love " will be on weekends, every Saturday although sometimes very late like this week; and if I get done with weekend homework in time Sundays. Saturdays for sure, Sundays every week that I can which I hope is every week because I like writing a lot more than homework.

Chapter 2

Edna was right behind Jo. She didn’t miss the look of total despair on Cliff’s face either. This couldn’t be happening. She was close to all of her girls, but Blair was different. Monica had always been like Blair’s cool older sister; Edna had always been the mother. Jo’s voice snapped her out of her trance.

Jo: Cliff, what happened?

Cliff: It was raining and we were driving, and then all of the sudden we were upside down. I couldn’t get Blair to wake up. Why wouldn’t she wake up?

It’s obvious that Cliff has been keeping it in, but now he just collapsed.

Cliff: She can’t die. I can’t live without her. She can’t die.

Jo: Cliff, you need to be strong for Blair now. Okay.

Cliff seemed to respond to be told what to do and nodded.

Jo: Now, go wash your face in the bathroom and fix you shirt. Blair can’t see you a mess when you go see her, now can she?

Cliff: No, she can’t.

He went to make himself presentable for his wife.

Edna: You were great with him, Jo.

Jo: Mrs. G. you’ve got to be strong too. Blair’s going to need us.

They sat in silence until Cliff returned. He looked like a different man once he cleaned himself up. Jo was amazed at how quickly he responded to “for Blair” he obviously worshipped the ground that Blair walk on. It made her happy to see Blair truly loved, after having dated so many worthless dingbats. The doctor came in while Jo was still in deep thought.

Doctor: Winfield.

Cliff, Edna and Jo rose.

Cliff: Yes, doctor.

Doctor: Are you a family member?

Cliff: Yes, she’s my wife.

Doctor: Mr. Winfield you wife is out of surgery, but things aren’t looking good at the moment.

Cliff: Sir, I’m a doctor. I can handle this, please tell me exactly what’s going on with my wife.

Doctor: Dr. Winfield, please come in to my office.

Cliff looked back and Edna, he knew that is was serious. If they had to “go into his office” it wasn’t good. He didn’t want them to hear it in fancy medical terms, so he walked off leaving them there. He would tell them what was going on. It was his responsibility, and no matter what he would not falter.

I'm soooo happy you posted more!I really like this story and wish you could post more but I realize that you want to finish your other story. This is great!

My next chapter is on the way. It's Saturday so today equals chapter three. I know it's technically Sunday, bur I count the day change when I go to bed and wake up. I'm still up, so as far as I'm concerned it's Saturday. Sorry, I'm a nightowl which means that I'm currently kind of hyper.

Chapter 3

Cliff didn’t know how he was going to tell Blair the prognosis. He was going to have to break her heart by telling her that there would be no baby in their future, at least not biologically. Blair’s dreams had always involved babies, his had always been to make all of her dreams come true. The doctor’s diagnosis was a declaration that neither he nor Blair would be getting the joy of realizing those dreams. He walked to her room. He hoped that she wasn’t awake yet, he wanted to avoid what he had to do as long as humanely possible. Of course, when he got there he was greeted by her looking him straight in the eye.

Cliff: Hey baby. How are you feeling?

Blair: Cliff, what did the doctor tell you?

Cliff: Why do you ask that?

Blair: I know you, you’re stalling. There’s something that you don’t want to tell me and I want to know what it is.

Cliff: Honey, you suffered severe abdominal trauma in the accident. When the surgeon’s fixed it, they damaged your uterus.

Blair: How bad is it?

Cliff: Your uterus won’t be able to sustain a pregnancy. There is a 99.9% chance that you won’t be able to get pregnant, and even if you do the pregnancy won’t make it past twelve weeks gestation.

Blair turned away from him and began to cry. Cliff went to hold her, but she shrunk away from his touch.

Blair: Please leave. I just want to be alone right now.

Cliff: Baby, I’m here. I understand that right now you need alone time so I’m going to leave, but I’ll be back. I’ll be in the waiting room with Edna and Jo if you need me.

Jo had been worried about what the doctor might be telling Cliff. She knew full well that Cliff would have found a way to have them informed of the situation in normal circumstances. His leaving with the doctor and not them meant that it was serious. Although she felt the gravity of the situation, she pretended that it was nothing to avoid worrying the others. Mrs. G. currently had two grown women, namely Tootie and Natalie, asleep with their heads on her shoulders. She woke them when Cliff came in to the room. He just sank into the chair, a broken man. Now they were really scared.

Natalie: What’s going on with Blair?

Jo: Cliff, tell us. Whatever it is, tell us.

Cliff: I just had to tell Blair that because of this accident she would never be able to have a baby.

Jo: How did she take it?

Cliff: She asked me to leave, that she just needed to be alone.

Edna: That’s not good. She has the tendency to shut down when she’s hurting. Cliff, if you don’t mind I think that the girls and I should go talk to her. She’s going to need us, before she completely shuts everyone out.

It will once again be a late chapter, unless I finish another chapter of "The Fact of Life" on Friday and have time to write a chapter of "Labor of Love." I'll have a chapter up tonight. I've found the cure for writer's block. It is a condition that usually occurs when your mind is in overdrive. The cure relax, sit down in front of the computer, and don't get up until you have at least a good portion of what you're going to write, written.

Chapter 4

Edna didn’t like what she saw when she entered Blair’s hospital room. Blair was just laying in bed staring out the window.

Edna: Hey, sweetie.

Blair didn’t acknowledge her in anyway, yet another troubling sign.

Jo: Hey, Warner. Snap out of it. Mrs. G. was speaking to you.

Blair does answer Jo.

Blair: Look, I really am not in the mood to be psychoanalyzed, so why don’t you three leave.

Jo finally caught on to what was going on. Blair had asked three to leave, not four even though she knew perfectly well that all four of them were there. This could only mean one thing, Blair was trying to protect them. She was about to lose it and she didn’t want Natalie, Tootie, or Mrs. Garrett to see it happen.

Jo: Natalie, Tootie, Mrs. G. why don’t you go and check on Cliff.

Edna: But........

Jo: Mrs. G. I need to talk to her alone.

Natalie: Come on Mrs. Garrett.

Natalie and Tootie escorted a very reluctant Edna Garrett back to the waiting room.

Jo: They’re gone.

Blair finally started to cry in earnest. Jo went and sat down next to her best friend. She wrapped her arms around Blair, just as she would Chucky or Rikki. She had always called Blair a spoiled brat, but the truth was she loved her dearly and hated to see her in so much pain.

Blair: Jo, why did this have to happen to me? I want a baby so badly, and now I’ll never have one.

Jo: I don’t know sweetie, but I do know that you’ll have the baby that you’ve always dreamed about.

Blair: How?

Jo: I don’t know that part yet, but we’ll figure out something. We can’t let your perfect genes go to waste now can we?

Blair laughed and lay her head on her friend’s shoulder. There she fell fast asleep, dreaming of the baby she would one day have. She knew that if Jo said that she was going to figure this out, she would figure this out. What Blair didn’t know was that Jo had figured everything out as soon as she found out that her best friend couldn’t have a baby the conventional way. The only figuring out that she had left to do is how exactly she was going to tell her husband what her plan was.

THIS IS BETTER THAN MAGNIFICENT IT'S just REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY GOOD!!!!!I can't express how much I LOVE it.(one hint, I'd love it even more if she just hurry up and talk to mrs.g, everyone knows Mrs.Garrett can make things "all better")jkjkjkjkjkjk! Anyway, it's really good, nice cure for writers block, I want to write something(don't ask me what cause I have absolutely no clue) and I'm blocked!(as you can see I haven't even come up with a topic!That's a BIG problem!)Anyway, thanks for the cure, I'll try it!

Chapter 5

Jo walked out into the waiting room to talk to the girls. She knew Blair well and knew that it would be a while before she agreed to see anybody other than Jo. When she opened the door, Mrs. G., the girls, and Cliff came straight up to her.

Edna: Jo, how is she?

Jo: I’m not going to lie to you, she’s devastated.

Edna: My poor little girl. I think that I’ll go see her now.

Jo: Mrs. G. don’t do that.

Natalie: Jo, I think that Mrs. Garrett should go up there.

Tootie: Yeah, Blair needs her.

Jo: Look guys, Blair isn’t going to be very receptive right now.

Natalie: Why not? She didn’t seem to have any problem opening up to you.

Jo: Right now she’s feeling like she let all of you down, especially you Mrs. G. and you Cliff.

Cliff: I was worried that she might react like this.

Edna: What are you two talking about?

Jo: The fact that Blair was really excited that soon she would give Cliff a baby and in a way you a grandchild. Now, some doctor just told her that she can’t do that for the two of you. She feels that it’s her fault, that she failed you. She’d feel like an even bigger failure if you saw her in the state that she’s in, that’s why she didn’t want to see any of you.

Cliff: Edna, I know my wife. I suspected that that was the reason she didn’t want me in the room or the three of you either, and now that Jo has spent some time with her and thinks the same thing, I know that I’m right.

Tootie: Then why isn’t she rejecting Jo.

Jo: I don’t know Tootie. The only thing I do know is that the friendship between Blair and me has always been different and something I don’t know what just told me that she wanted for me to stay. I know you guys probably didn’t hear her say the three of you leave instead of the four of you.

Natalie: No, we didn’t.

Jo: Exactly, and I normally wouldn’t have caught it, and she probably didn’t realize that she had said; but for some reason something inside me did, and knew that she needed me to stay with her.

Edna: Well something inside me is telling me that whether she’ll admit or not Blair needs me, but is being stubborn. So right this second I am going to go and have a talk with that young lady.

GO MRS.GARRETT!!!!UH HUH UH HUH!! YAY!! I'm so glad to see Mrs.G in action!!!!YOO-HOO!!sorry...this is really really really really good! not sappy...well..you know not bad sappy...good sappy! Okay, guys here goes the next chapter. I also have something to run by you. I have an idea for when I finish the ones I currently have pending. What would happen if Tad and Blair started their family by adopting Benjy? What if before they have a chance to finalize the adoption, his biological parents wanted him back? What if Jo got transfered to a New York precint? What if her first assignment was to go to retrieve a little boy to be returned to his biological parents? What if when she arrived to pick up the little boy, it was her best friend's son? A lot of questions and a lot of people feeling betrayed. All will be answered in "Tested Bonds" where nothing will ever be the same.

Chapter 6

Jo realized that their would be no stopping Mrs. G., until she was allowed to see Blair. Mrs. G. had given her “the look” which meant that the only thing left for her to do was to warn Mrs. Garrett about what she would inevitably find.

Jo: Mrs. G. you just have to be prepared, right now she’s not your Blair. She hurting, and she’s angry.

Edna: Joanna, do you think I don’t know that? Because she’s hurting and angry, is why she needs me. She needs a mother right now.

Jo: Mrs. Garrett, I know. What I mean is that you have too understand that she’s more than likely going to be unreceptive to your mothering. She’s feeling unworthy. If she pushes you away, I just want for you to understand that it’s not you she’s angry with. She’s trying to protect you, even if she has to hurt you in order to do so.

Cliff: Edna, you have to understand that Jo’s right. We’re all going to have to be really patient with her. In a way you more than anybody, she’s always looked for your appoval Edna. Your right you are a mother, and she feels that you’re going to be disappointed by her inability to have a baby.

Edna hugs Jo close to her.

Edna: Cliff, you have to understand that all of those years taking care of them at Eastland and then at Langley, made me see Blair, Jo, Tootie, and Natalie as my girls. Part of being their housemother/confidant is being there for them even when their pushing you away. Whether it be.......

Edna looks down at Jo.

Edna: that they’re angry and want to elope with their on leave boyfriend,.......

Edna looks over at Tootie.

Edna: or they’re having difficulty feeling loyal to their African-American culture in a mostly white school,...

Edna looks over at Natalie.

Edna: or their father just died and they feel like any joy in a lack of loyalty to him. They have to know that you’re still there no matter what the situation is.

Jo remembers each and every one of the occasions that Mrs. Garrett is talking about, and then it hits her. The only constant in this world is love. Mrs. Garrett loves Blair, and right now their is nothing in the world that Blair needs more than to know that she is going to be loved whether she has ten kids or none.

Jo: Mrs. Garrett go to her.

Cliff: Jo.....

Jo: No, Cliff. Mrs. Garrett has to go to her and right now. We’ve been wrong, Mrs. Garrett’s right whether Blair wants to admit it or not she needs Mrs. G.

Edna smiles at how much her girls have grown up.

Jo: Go to her, Mrs. G. Just promise me you won’t leave until she lets you in.

Edna: I promise. I won’t.

Things have been a little hectic, my cousin is getting married in a little more than a week and I've had a lot of Mariachi events(we won first place in San Marcos). I just want to let you know that this weekend at least one will be updated, most like this one in response to Charlotte Rae Fan's bump.

Sorry it's taken me so long to update, but as I told Charlotte Rae Fan I had no idea how to write Jo telling Rick her plan. Solution: Write filler and continue to hold off on actual conversation. Also since in the below posted chapter I talk about the kids I thought I should do some character summaries.

Bruce Gaines: 65, married to Edna Garrett, travels a lot due to business will only be seen through telephone calls (kind of like Chrissy on Three's Company)

Edna Garrett: 55, married to Bruce Gaines, refuses to feel like a kept woman so she kept her maiden name

Rick Bonner: 33, married to Jo, father of Chucky and Rikki, professional musician, has his marriage tested in the story by his wife's devotion to her friends, feels that his wife's friends are being placed above their family

Jo Bonner: 23, married to Rick, mother of Chucky and Rikki, social worker, willing to due ANYTHING for her friends

Charles Albert Bonner: 2½, son of Rick and Jo, brother of Rikki, light of his of Aunt Blair's life, referred to by all as Chucky

Chapter 7

Edna walked down the hall toward Blair’s room with determination. However, as she stepped into the room and saw Blair lying there sleeping peacefully she lost some of her resolve. Edna still planned on talking to Blair; she simply planned on being a bit more gentle in her pursuit. The nearer that she got to the bed the more her heart broke. She couldn’t even begin to imagine the pain that her little girl must be going through. Edna pulled a chair up to the bed, and just sat there watching Blair sleep and praying that everything would be okay. After about an hour of contemplating the situation, Edna noticed that Blair was beginning to wake.

Blair: Mrs. Garrett?

Edna: I’m right here sweetie.

Blair: You always are. I’m so sorry.

Edna: For what?

Blair: For letting you down.

Edna: You did no such thing.

Blair: Yes, I did.

Edna: No, you did not.

Blair: But I did. I know that you’ve always wanted
grandchildren. I also know that it doesn’t look like
either of your sons is going to give them to you.

Edna: Sweetheart, if the only thing that is going to make you
realize that you haven’t failed me is for me to have
grandchildren then why don’t we count Jo’s kids, Tootie’s
kids, and Natalie’s little boy.

Blair: Because Chucky, Rikki, JJ, Allisha, and Sean don’t call you
Grandma. That is why we are not counting the other girls
children.

Blair lost control of her emotions yet again and began to cry, as Edna looked on helplessly. For the first time she did not know how to fix one of her girls’ problems.

Jo sat in the waiting room wondering how she was going to tell her husband her plan. This was going to be very tricky, there was no telling how Rick would react to the news. As she continued to way the options on how to tell Rick her cell phone rang.

Jo: Hello.

Rick: Hi babe, I just heard about Blair. How is she doing?

Jo: Not good, the doctor told her that she can’t get pregnant.

Rick gasped.

Rick: She must be devastated.

Jo: She is. But....

Chapter 8

Rick worried when Jo used words like but. They always had serious consequences, very, very serious consequences.

Rick: What are you thinking?

Jo: I’m thinking that we can help her.

Rick: Help her how?

Jo: Give her a baby.

Cliff entered the room silently. He wasn’t sure if Blair was ready to see him yet, and he really didn’t want to push her. It was a moot point. She was fast asleep, but Edna. Edna was sitting in a chair by Blair’s bedside with her face buried in her hands. The slight tremble of her shoulders let Cliff know that she was crying.

Cliff: Edna?

Edna quickly wiped at her eyes. Cliff didn’t need to be worrying about her right now. As hard as he was trying to hide it, he was probably just as devastated by the news as Blair was.

Edna: Cliff, how are you doing?

Cliff: Edna, don’t try to avoid the subject. Why are you crying?
What’s wrong? What happened with
Blair?

Edna: It’s nothing.

Cliff: Edna, truth.

Edna: It’s just that, over the years the girls have had their fair
share of heart breaks. I’ve always been able
to fix them, or at the very least ease the sting a little. I
can’t fix this. I can’t even make Blair feel a
little bit better. Do you realize that she apologized to me?
She told me she was sorry for letting me
down. How could she ever think that she could let me
down. Not the stupidest stunt they pulled over
the years let me down. They upset me, because I worried
about them. But never have they let me
down. And this isn’t some stupid stunt, it was completely
out of her control.

Cliff knew exactly how she felt. It killed him when Blair looked at him with guilt and shame in her beautiful, brown eyes. He went up to the woman his wife considered her mother, and he wrapped his arms around her. He held her as she cried and he cried too. They cried for the woman lying in the hospital bed by them. They cried for the woman they both adored. They cried because she was in pain. They cried because they both knew that her pain was very real, and they were powerless to ease it. Why did this have to happen to Blair? She didn’t deserve it. As far as he was concerned no one did, but especially not her. She wanted a baby so badly, it wasn’t fair that she couldn’t have one. It just wasn’t fair. He was worried about the toll this was going to take on her. He knew his wife. She would never, ever be the same. Some how he had to make this better. Blair would have her baby. If it was the last thing he did, she would have her baby.

OMG! Still as awesome as ever! It's so great! Can't wait for more!
