View Full Version : The "Family Guy" Bashing Thread
Dr. Thong 11-07-2007, 08:17 PM Since "threadcrapping" is frowned upon here, I'm going to start my own thread about the Family Guy because I have something to say. At the risk of raising Irene's ire (I know she's a big fan of this show), I have to say that Family Guy should have stayed cancelled.
In the interest of full disclosure, I will say that part of my dismissal of this show is due to the fact that every time I visit my cousin's house, I am subjected to at least two episodes of this show, which in my opinion, is a poor man's Simpsons.
It's just a barrage of stupid, low-brow gags and I just don't get why this show is so big. And it's so obviously a Simpsons rip off (fat, dorky Dad, semi-hot oblivious wife, idiot bar friends, weird kids, etc) that Seth McFarlane should pay Matt Groening royalties.
To be fair, I did see the recent Star Wars parody episode and it wasn't bad. I found it one of the more tolerable episodes I've seen. And I will admit that Stewie the psychotic baby can be quite funny at times. But that aside, I don't get this show at all.
Now, I invite threadcrapping - I don't mind a contrary opinion to my own, because that's all I'm expressing...an opinion.
I hope Irene won't hate me for this, but I have been wanting to post this for a long time, so I welcome your thoughts, hate mail and whatever else you want to post in response to my bashing of the Family Guy.
Chris

Hey, I am a huge fan of the show. No doubt abt that. You obviously know me sweetie.
I don't mind your negative opinions on this show. I have this saying and I say it a lot:
IT IS NOT WHAT YOU SAY, BUT HOW YOU SAY IT. And let me say, you said it well.

Irene,
Thank you. I was a bit worried that you would take offense, because, like I said, I know you are a big fan of the show. And I respect that, because I have always found your posts to be entertaining and always fun. Hell, some of them are hoots! You are obviously a very passionate person and I like passionate people because they are usually the most interesting. At least they feel passionately about something, right??
I'm glad I was able to put my opinion across the right way. Hey, Family Guy is doing something right because the DVD sales are what resurrected its network run on FOX. It obviously has a big audience and isn't suffering because I don't watch it.
Ireneparalegal 11-07-2007, 09:04 PM No problem. We may never see eye to eye on Family Guy, but there is far more we agree on and that is what matters more.

Thanks for posting. I thought that I was the only person here who doesn't
get Seth MacFarlane's warped sense of humor. I'll take Matt Groening's
SIMPSONS or Mike Judge's KING OF THE HILL any day over the feeble jokes
in FAMILY GUY. The only reason I watch the latter at all (which is seldom)
is for the pop culture spoofs (like the hour-long "Star Wars" satire, which
wasn't bad ... for this show). The rest of the time I find it perverse and/or
obscene. I don't consider myself a prude but I think suggestive wit is
funnier than blatant jokes about sex (which are far too frequent on this
program). Just expressing my opinion.
comedyfreak 11-08-2007, 10:49 AM I'm actually starting to like Family Guy, it's starting to grow on me. Stewie is a crack up, I seen an episode where he spanks his brother.

I think Stewie's about the only funny thing on this show. I do like his "Dr. Smith" pseudo-British accent and psychotic hostility towards everyone. That's about it, though.

This is true. I always enjoy your stuff on this forum, Irene.
TV DVD Fan 11-08-2007, 09:15 PM I love FAMILY GUY, but it's humor is often very perverse--- which I do not condone. Often times I will get offended by these kinds of jokes and will not laugh at all. I'll just say that Seth and friends are sick bastards. But I think they know that. They know their views are often sick and twisted; but they just think the jokes are funny. There's nothing funny to me about sexual role-playing or homosexual babies (I like Stewie, but the whole "being gay" thing doesn't do anything for me) to me at all. FAMILY GUY's earlier episodes were alot tamer than those of today. Today they can get away with murder (and they literally did in the last episode, lol), and they take advantage of the censors. I do happen to enjoy the majority of FAMILY GUY's jokes and shows.
Ireneparalegal 11-08-2007, 09:35 PM There was actually one time I was thrown back by something on FG. There was a mention abt rape and we seen a reference made to the young girl, Elizabeth Smart, who had been in the headlines for being missing and was later found months later and there was mention of her having been sexually abused and so forth by her captors. Family Guy showed a child playing the piano and her father and mother in the background talking abt how having been raped has changed their daughter's piano playing ability. I am sorry, to me that was over the line. I even made a thread abt it and the FG fans posted to me how that is FG's humor and no one was immune. To me, a child being raped is not anything to have been made fun of.
Dean Winchester 11-09-2007, 12:52 AM I love the old episodes, but I agree that the show should've stayed cancelled and become a cult classic instead of getting back on the air and tarnishing what was a good 50 episode run.
South Park truly put Family Guy into perspective last season with their "Cartoon Wars" episode (Matt and Trey said they received "thank you"'s from the Simpsons and King Of The Hill writers). The show is nothing but a bunch of random pop culture references spun together with no point or story. Family Guy is funny every now and then but it doesn't amount to a pimple on the butt of The Simpsons or South Park, two animated shows that have something to say.

just curiously, what do you think about South Park? I think SP is far more "sickminded" and perverse than Family Guy has ever been. And much like Stewie, they have thrown subtle hints that Cartman (which is funny since he used to be Archie Bunker-ish, and now he's wanting Kyle to give him head) and Butters are possibly gay around in many episodes in the past few years. However, as gross as SP gets at times, I do think as a whole it's a far better series than Family Guy because even the most random and offensive episode has a point.
catlover79 11-09-2007, 01:06 AM I've tried watching both Family Guy and South Park (as I have friends and relatives who love both shows) and neither of them do anything for me. I just don't like their type of humor, and I don't like sacrilegious humor. So I simply don't watch either.
Dean Winchester 11-09-2007, 01:13 AM well, South Park is an equal opportunity offender, if it offends you, Matt and Trey accomplished their goal. But most of their humor has a point
friendsfan77 11-09-2007, 02:28 AM I was excited when it first came back, and enjoyed new episodes for a while, but I haven't been too impressed as of last season. I think that the pop-culture jokes were cute and fun at first but eventually it wound up getting out of hand.
I'll never get the "Simpsons"/"Family Guy" comparison. People who run around screaming FG is a rip-off can only stand on the ground that their characters are similar and that's it.
The humor is completely, totally different. I *always* LOL at FG. Seriously, LOL. People can hear me in other rooms sometimes. I don't think I've ever truly laughed out loud with "The Simpsons." Maybe once or twice, but nowhere near as much as with FG. I can think about something from FG three or four days later and still LOL at just my memory of the scene.
Ireneparalegal 12-19-2007, 01:51 AM I remember how I was a huge Simpsons fan.
Now, it is all abt FG...STEWIE RULEZ!!!!
I guess some people love the Simpsons, others love Family Guy and others enjoy South Park. To me, it is just three different cartoons geared at certain age groups.
tv star collector 12-19-2007, 08:58 AM I often laugh at THE SIMPSONS. I can't remember ever laughing at FAMILY
GUY (maybe once or twice). I think the latter is highly overrated. Just my
opinion.

Another testament to how different their humor is. I have nothing against "The Simpsons" at all, it just doesn't appeal much to me. I like FG's style of out-there crazy.
friendsfan77 12-20-2007, 10:59 AM I think The Simpsons was much better in its early days. It's not as good now as it once was IMHO.

I agree. However, it's still funnier than the Family Guy any day of the week. IMO.;)

Same here, personally, I love the show myself but the good Dr. did state his case quite well here. Ya, some of the "bathroom" humour can be tiring (but I guess I still laugh because it reminds me of someone I know).
Try a few more shows - their paradies are the best ones and they do have a few - or they'll toss in some quick other cartoon, show or movie gag. One of my alltime favourite eps was the "FCC" one - the song is a classic.
Funny, I got tired of the Simpsons years ago. I know what you mean about it being a bit of a "ripoff", but I think Family Guy is aimed more at the older Baby Boomer generation than the Simpsons is. So this old broad fits in just fine. ;)
Good thread

Good point Irene - same thought hit me - I didn't find that in good taste one bit. I think there's been a couple of other times it was over the edge of decency.
TV DVD Fan 12-20-2007, 08:23 PM FAMILY GUY often lacks tact, and believe me I'm not watching it for "jokes" about rape and abortion--- that's just not funny--- and it doesn't belong on TV. Its biting parodies are definately the best I've ever seen though--- I love it especially when they parody my favorite shows. One of the best was when they censored THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW title in the episode "PTV."
"It's The ------ Van -------- Show, Starring ------- Van ------." I still laugh myself silly everytime I see that one.
At times, the show just gets uncomfortable--- especially when any of my elders are in the room---- and I'll just sit there stunned not knowing whether to turn it off or let it slide. I long for the days when a show could be funny without making one sexual innuendo or inappropriate comment per minute. It's really hard to believe that people were up in arms against ALL IN THE FAMILY when it first aired--- it's tamer than a kitten compared to FAMILY GUY. With all of its faults, however, FAMILY GUY can be great comedy, when they're trying to be funny--- not just going for cheap shots. I've had my belly laughs from FAMILY GUY--- hundreds of them. It just seems though that for every wonderful TV parody or Stewie and Brian song-and-dance, there's a sex scene to match it. I can see both sides to why a person would love it or hate it. Personally, I love it but lately it just seems the episodes and storylines are hit-or-miss for me. Glad to see so much buzz on this particular topic, though!
Well I guess I;m in the minority here because I think Family Guy is a great show.
The Simpsons have been coasting on thier reputation for the longest time; although I will give props to the Simpson's Movie, which was very funny.
But IMO it's the best thing that's happened to the show in a decade.
I have said this before in other FG threads, and it may seem a bit strange, but the show speaks to me.
Seth and his writers riff on (and celebrate) lots of pop culture stuff that I grew up on and still love, and there are a few times I watch the show and think that I'm the only one who got that particular joke. I haven't felt that kinship with a show since Mystery Science Theater 3000.
Yeah, they may go overboard a few times with a couple of cringe worthy subjects, but at least they're trying to push things and keep things interesting.
The Simpsons gave up on that a long time ago.

I know the feeling.
There was an episode where all of a sudden, an announcer started to set it up as a cliffhanger, with the "Soap" theme music playing, and then it switches to a shot of the family in the exact same position as the families from the "Soap" opening, fighting and all. The announcer says something like "...And will any of our younger viewers understand this SOAP reference?"
I know for a fact that I was probably the only kid in my whole school who understood it 100% lol

The first season, to me, was the best. After that, it got too raunchy for my
taste.

LOL - Exactly - I'm with TJL - it was like they were speaking to me the second I heard the music. That's what I do love about the show too - is they DO try to push things - the Simpsons no longer does. For every crude, and overboard thing (and they do), they have 20 hilarious things for me. I love how they "surprise" me.
I agree tho - not a show to have on when there are little kids or granny visiting! ;) ('course, neither was the Sopranos - it's just because it's animated that I think people are more sensitive to the humour).
