...to be precise:

271-5654 is the number Jack dials from the Regal Beagle to warn Janet about her "High School Sweetheart".

Of course, by "The New Landlord", the phone number was 555-something. And in between, on the very day Janet and Helen joined the beach protest, their phone went dead, and Jack's fixing only made it worse... I suppose that's when Apt. 201's number changed.

I have no idea when exactly all Hollywood-universe numbers became 555-.... Was it as late as 1979? Ha!! So it was all Jack's fault... :happyface

In the episode where Chrissy's friend is a call girl (Darlene, if I remember correctly?), she makes a call and tells the person that she can be reached at 555-x

John probably punched random keys, not thinking about 555-x

Either that, or in "High School Sweetheart" it was a CBS studios internal line between two phones on the sound stages. Granted, that time they never showed Janet receiving the call in the apartment.

In "A Hundred Dollars a What?", I think the call girl's name was Darlene.

I always thought that Hhollywood used 555- because of that song that came out called 867-5309. The person that had that phone number an outrageous number of calls and it became a law that you could only use 555.

Neat, I never knew the US had a law about it. So was there a version of 867-5309 from before 1982, when Tommy Tutone did it? Or was 555- used even prior to the law being passed, as in "The New Landlord" is in 1979?...

I thought that there was a law. I think I heard that on I Love the 80's. I looked it up in yahoo and it gave me this information. http://ask.yahoo.com/20020826.html
