View Full Version : Five Sitcom Stars Who Hated the Roles that Made Them Famous Oriole Adams 10-31-2007, 06:31 PM An interesting article (http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/9271), I thought! See what you think. Mikado 10-31-2007, 07:40 PM I knew about pretty much all of them except Marcia Strassman (Although, I can understand her point about the shallowness of her character)......I was surprised that your namesake Don Adams wasnt here, as he came to hate playing Maxwell Smart after a few seasons Adamantium 10-31-2007, 08:56 PM I figured Fred Gwynne would be on that list for playing Herman Munster. I knew Robert Reed would be there and after seeing Tina Louise on the list, that seemed right. But Marcia Strassman, John Amos and Gary Burghoff came as a shock to me. Especially since they don't seemed ashamed of their characters now. Marcia did the bonus features for the "Welcome Back, Kotter" DVD. John Amos appeared at the TV Land Awards and looked proud to have been a part of "Good Times." And Gary has always said only good things about his role on "M*A*S*H", even appearing in the reunion. Dean Winchester 10-31-2007, 09:06 PM To be honest, I think any actor who is bitter about being typecast in a successful role is an ingrate. Many actors struggle for decades hoping for one decent role, and these people became stars but hated it? Ireneparalegal 10-31-2007, 09:16 PM To be honest, I think any actor who is bitter about being typecast in a successful role is an ingrate. Many actors struggle for decades hoping for one decent role, and these people became stars but hated it? That is how I feel. I hate actors who are ingrates. What would they rather be remembered for? A legacy like O.J. Simpson? Why do they become actors then? OH Nuts! 10-31-2007, 09:18 PM They made nice money and got instant name recognition that many struggling actors would have killed for. My heart bleeds for them. Zoneboy 10-31-2007, 09:26 PM They forgot Gary Coleman. Mikado 10-31-2007, 09:31 PM They made nice money and got instant name recognition that many struggling actors would have killed for. My heart bleeds for them. In Gary Burghoff's defense, I dont think he hated playing the character until they changed it so much from the character in the movie, who was sharper and less of Hawkeye's "puppy". Yooch 10-31-2007, 09:33 PM I sort of new about some who were mentioned in the article, though Gary Burkhof surprised me. I knew about Robert Reed. Years ago, I remember Robert Young alluding to the fact that he was either embarrassed by, or disliked his role as Jim Anderson on Father Knows Best. This really surprised me. He played a good character, and did it very well. His rationale could have been for other reasons, but, yeah, this surprised me. The other one I remember, though not a sitcom, was from Bonanza--the deal with Pernell Roberts, who portrayed Adam Cartwright. It may not have been the role itself. I think it dealt with salary issues and top billing, not with the acting aspect of it. When he left the show, I do think the show suffered to an extent. friendsfan77 10-31-2007, 10:19 PM They forgot Gary Coleman. He should have made #1. Ireneparalegal 10-31-2007, 10:34 PM He should have made #1. He is the poster child for "ingrate actors". And I do emphasize "child". Mikado 10-31-2007, 10:38 PM aww thats not nice   Mr. Television 10-31-2007, 10:57 PM I sort of new about some who were mentioned in the article, though Gary Burkhof surprised me. I don't know why Pernell Roberts would have issues about the billing. All 4 actors received top billing. They changed the rotation of the stars each week. snl 70s show fan 11-01-2007, 12:03 AM where was eve plumb all she ever does when anyone brings up jan brady is whine about it dawsongirl 11-01-2007, 01:01 AM To be honest, I think any actor who is bitter about being typecast in a successful role is an ingrate. Many actors struggle for decades hoping for one decent role, and these people became stars but hated it? I agree. I will never understand. Ok, so unless you had some sort of hellish, nightmare, stuck going to the shrink for the rest of your life experience working on the show, WHY HATE IT? It made you a star. And fans will forever remember you, no matter what. Gawd. dawsongirl 11-01-2007, 01:03 AM I don't know why Pernell Roberts would have issues about the billing. All 4 actors received top billing. They changed the rotation of the stars each week. Arguing over billing is petty. Geez. catlover79 11-01-2007, 01:03 AM They made nice money and got instant name recognition that many struggling actors would have killed for. My heart bleeds for them. :yeahthat I always got the impression that John Amos was never ashamed of his role as James Evans - but didn't like the stereotypes that JJ perpetrated as he got more and more screen time. As for people like Marcia Strassman, I think maybe their attitudes change somewhat over time. If you look at her imdb profile, there are recent pictures of her with Gabe Kaplan. So, who knows? Dean Winchester 11-01-2007, 03:30 AM sometimes it's smart to do alphabetical billing if the show has more than 2 or 3 major characters. I know Friends did it alphabetically (even tho it seemed fitting that the two biggest stars in the pack, Aniston and Cox, had the earlier names alphabetically). I think a show like Grey's Anatomy should do it alphabetically, because while Ellen Pompeo should be top billed, everyone else should be alphabetically. Who says that Justin Chambers is more important to the show than T.R. Knight, or that Sandra Oh is more important than Katherine Heigl? it should just be alphabetical after Pompeo's name since pretty much everyone is equal supportingwise. comedyfreak 11-01-2007, 03:48 AM I figured Fred Gwynne would be on that list for playing Herman Munster. John Amos appeared at the TV Land Awards and looked proud to have been a part of "Good Times." And Gary has always said only good things about his role on "M*A*S*H", even appearing in the reunion. I knew about Fred Gwynne not wanting to talk about his Herman role, I never thought it was something to feel uncomfortable about he played the character very well. I heard that Pernell Roberts didn't fit in well with the rest of the cast and separated himself from them off camera. And he didn't hang out with them on their off time, where as the others did things together off the set. Sally Field doesn't like to mention her Flying Nun days only saying that it was a difficult time in her life at the time. I guess everyone gave her a bad time about her role, her step-dad talked her into doing the show after she turned it down. I for one am glad she did the part it gives me great joy watching that show. I also think the media gave her a bad time about the role as well. treky 11-01-2007, 04:25 PM well, on the other hand, I heard Kellsey Grammer say; after "FRASIER" ended that he liked the character, and liked playing him. noveelatbk 11-01-2007, 10:36 PM Bob Saget- Full House, possibly John Stamos too Dustin Diamond- Saved by the Bell They don't seem to be embrace those shows noveelatbk 11-01-2007, 10:39 PM Kirk Cameron- wanted Mike Seaver to be a role model after he became a serious Christian tanquant 11-02-2007, 08:27 AM Jaleel White does not like to be associated with Steve Urkel. If not for steve would he have a career at all? Mr. Television 11-02-2007, 09:41 AM sometimes it's smart to do alphabetical billing if the show has more than 2 or 3 major characters. Everybody knew Larry Hagman was the star of the show but he never had a different billing than the other actors. I always liked that he did that. noveelatbk 11-02-2007, 11:30 AM Jaleel White does not like to be associated with Steve Urkel. If not for steve would he have a career at all? Steve Urkel saved that show treky 11-02-2007, 04:06 PM An interesting article (http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/9271), I thought! See what you think. I knew about Robert Reed and Tina Louise of course; since those two cases have been well documented over the years (ecspesially Robert Reed). And I knew that Gary Burghoff didn't like the way they changed Radar into "a naive farm boy who wouldn't drink anything stronger than grape nehi"*. But I didn't know he was THAT dissatisfied with the role. But; that's surprising about the others. *what is "grape nehi" anyway? megamanj2004 11-02-2007, 05:02 PM I always knew Robert Reed hated being on Brady Bunch, especially since he refused to show up on the series finale ep. and his off-camera antics also made it apparent, too. John Amos - I think it was the J.J. character that sent him off the show. But he seemed proud at the TV Land reunion of "Good Times." Gary Coleman - Yep! Like a previous poster said: "He's the poster boy for ingrate child actors!" Also you can add Dustin Diamond on this list, too. His behavior on "Celebrity Fit Club" and his attitude towards the other cast members (particularly towards Da Brat and Kimberly Locke) for his snarky attitude about not wanting people to call him Screech. Bob Saget? - I just recently heard him at a Comedy Club Tour at a college and he jokingly sang a song about his Danny Tanner character being gay. But he did admit that he gotten tired of AFV b/c the "crotch jokes" were getting stale and tiring. John Stamos - That was true about what happened w/ him and Full House. It was said that he gotten tired of being the easy-going-cool Uncle Jessy and he even scared off some children and made them cry off-camera, too. Dean Winchester 11-02-2007, 05:12 PM I do think there's a difference between being ingrateful for being known for a certain show (like Gary Coleman) or disliking the role that made you famous but realizing that it's an important part of your career and having to get used to it (like Bob Saget). I think we can add Sarah Michelle Gellar to this mix also, she thinks she's too big of a star for Buffy, when whatever star power she has at this point is because of Buffy fans still trying to support her. I think karma hit Freddie Prinze Jr. in the butt big time after he talked Sarah into quitting Buffy by saying she's too good for TV (I guess considering his father was a big TV star who committed suicide, I can see his resentment of television), but then a year or two later, HE was doing a sitcom of his own (is he admitting he's lesser than his wife? lol) and it got cancelled in less than a season. Totally served him right for bashing on his wife's show and fanbase. mrs.gingerhinkley 11-03-2007, 11:55 AM Very interesting story! Thanks for posting a link. I have different opinions on this topic: On one hand, I think it's sort of ignorrant of some to stereotype actors/actresses based on one role or whatever because stereotyping is not cool. However, on the other hand; many of us dedicated TV fans would just kill for the roles that they had... I don't know... But omy. Two of the five were from Sherwood Shwartz's shows... and they were the two shows that were supposed to be about family and learning to live together!!! Over the years, I think Tina Louise has said that over time the relationship between her and her character has been resolved somewhat. That's not saying she doesn't maybe still regret taking that role; but I think I read somewhere that after her daughter started watching re-runs of "Gilligan's" she became a little bit ok about the issue. |
