Several years ago I put together a Jack Webb Tour for this board. It was a list of places where Jack Webb and other Dragnet cast and crew members lived at in Los Angeles. I have now done the same with the Dick Van Dyke Show cast. Enjoy.

THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW TOUR

THE DICK VAN DYKE THEME SONG (never used)
WORDS BY MOREY AMSTERDAM
MUSIC BY EARL HAGEN
So you think that you've got trouble.
Well trouble's a bubble.
So tell old mister trouble to get lost.

Why not hold your head up high and
Stop cryin', start tryin'.
And don't forget to keep your fingers crossed.

When you find the joy of living
Is loving and giving,
You'll be there when the winning dice are tossed.

A smile is just a frown that's turned upside-down.
So smile and that frown'll get lost,
And don't forget to keep your fingers crossed.

TRIVIA AND HISTORY
"HEAD OF THE FAMILY"
The originally pilot starred starred the shows creator, writer and producer,
Carl Reiner, as Rob Petrie, Barbara Brittan as Laura and Sylvia Miles as Sally Rogers. When the show was picked up as a series, the powers that be thought that Reiner was too Jewish and too New York.

When casting began on the series one of the runner - up's for the role of Rob Petrie was Johnny Carson. Dick Van Dyke was on Broadway in "Bye, Bye, Birdie", and took a week off to fly to Los Angeles to audition for the part, which he got. There were many actresses who tried out for the role of Laura, but producer Danny Thomas remembered a young actress named Mary Tyler Moore, who had appeared on his show, and recommended her for the part.
When Rose Marie was hired for the role of Sally Rogers, she mentioned Morey Amsterdam for the part of Buddy Sorrell. The character of Alan Brady was based on comedian Sid Caesar. Reiner used to write for Caesar's classic 50's tv comedy, " Your Show Of Shows".

JANUARY 20, 1961
On the same day as the series pilot was being filmed, President John F. Kennedy was inaugurated.

After the first season, CBS canceled the show, then renewed it. When it finally did go off the air, it was because the cast and producers wanted to out while the show was still on top.

The theme song lyrics, which were never heard, were written by Morey Amsterdam and the music was by Earl Hagen. In 2006 Dick Van Dyke sang it for the first time at the TV Awards.

Thank you, BurbankBob!
I was in L.A. on vacation last year, and it would have been nice to have visited a couple of these locations. Now I have to go back!

I disagree on this point. Desilu Studios had two locations, and the location that you list, now near Sony Picture Studios, was Desilu-Culver City, but according to The Official Dick Van Dyke Show Book, The DVD Show was filmed at Desilu-Cahuenga, which was located at (I think.) 846 Cahuenga Blvd. and later became Ren-Mar Studios, where Seinfeld was originally filmed. That same book has a page reproduced from the time which lists shows that were being filmed at both studios during the week when the DVD Show pilot was filmed. The DVD Show that week used the stage normally used to film The Danny Thomas Show while that show was not being filmed that week.

A gentle correction: The name of the actress who played Millie Helper was Ann MORGAN Guilbert.

Regarding the show's theme song w/ Morey's lyrics- Man, he had his work cut out for him. The melody is so 'busy', one would have to sing it rather slowly for it to not be a tongue twister. Tho he had a reputation as a good songwriter (Rum and Coca Cola, among others), these lyrics are less than great, the last line 'and dont forget to keep your fingers crossed', being the real stinker. Not that I could do better, I'm just sayin...
