View Full Version : Cuban Pals Episode - Was This a Goof or Scripted

In Cuban Pals when Ricky was translating back and forth for Lucy and his friends, at the point where Lucy wants Ricky to ask how his friends liked the boat trip, he starts to ask them in English and mid-sentence stops, says "Oh wonderful" and laughs. He then continues to laugh while asking the question in Spanish. It looks so natural like Desi really did goof up. It's hard for me to tell if that was really in the script or if they kept the goof in the episode because it was so funny!

What do you think?

It was a goof, but Desi ad-libbed very well and made it a smooth transition.

There is also a goof in the redecorating episode when Lucy helps the Mertzes with their ugly apartment. When she and Ricky are in the kitchen and she is trying to explain to him "Let's paint the furniture and reupholster the old furniture" Desi then adds this line, "You mean, paint the apartment and re-upholster the furniture." Lucy then says, "Yes." This was also a well ad-libbed moment.

Ha! I was just about to post on this one! It is an excellent ad-lib by Desi and it's hard to believe it's not in the script.

"Let's paint the furniture and reupholster the old furniture" Desi then adds this line, "You mean, paint the apartment and re-upholster the furniture." Lucy then says, "Yes."

Then the classic Desi line: "I didn't hear you." Brilliant!

It was a goof that turn out so well that the writers actually wrote the same "goof" into the script of "Lucy's Mother in Law."

And the Van Johnson episode where Lucy says she "vanced with Dan" or something like that. Desi helped recover from the slip of the tongue.

I always thought this line was scripted because he was saying he couldn't hear her and then he corrects her. Like he was contradicting what he was saying. You know what I mean?

Lodee, I feel the same way. I watched it over and over and I believe it was scripted. The comeback was too perfect and it seemed to fit. Everything I've read says that this was one of Lucy's rare goofs, but I disagree. ;)

I guess the only way to find out would be to see a copy of the script!
