View Full Version : Stand-Ins

Of course, as with any show, there are stand-ins. Lucy and Desi had stand-ins to help with staging and they were also used as extras.

Bennett Green was used as Desi's stand-in. We can see him as messengers, deliverymen and cameramen.

Hazel Pierce was Lucy's stand-in and was also seen as extras: clubwoman Grace Munson and many other characters. She's on the right.

These two are involved in so many scenes it would be very difficult to capture them all. If you know of a great shot that captures either one, let me know and I will try to find it.

Also, I never heard about stand-ins for Fred and Ethel. If you have info, cough it up! :)

That woman on the far right, I don't know if she is the same woman I am thinking of. The pic doesn't really show her face well. There is one older woman who I see constantly in the background, more in the Tropicana scenes or where there is a group of people.

Bennett Green certainly was in ILL quite a few times.

Barbara Pepper of course had actual lines.

I don't know if this belongs here but let me say in the episode THE AUDITION, the two tv network guys are shown and they are played by Jess Oppenheimer and Harry Ackerman, CBS Vice-president.

In LUCY WRITES A PLAY, the stage manager was played by the ILL script clerk.

In the episode NEW NEIGHBORS, the woman was played by K.T. Stevens who happened to be a very close friend of Vivian Vance.

You can get some pretty good shots of Hazel Pierce in "Lucy Goes to the Hospital." She's one of the nurses. And a not-so-great shot of her in "The Quiz Show." Between that show, where she's the woman covered in bandages who went over Niagara Falls in a barrel, and being jammed in the closet in "Drafted," as well as doing stunts like being suspended in air as Lucy's stand-in in "Milton Berle Hides Out at the Ricardos," Hazel must have been a pretty good sport. It seems like every time there's a nightclub scene, she's also one of the patrons seated at a table.

And in "The Ricardos Are Interviewed," Ricky's new agent is Johnny Clark, played by John Gallaudet, a close friend of Bill Frawley. John was a pallbearer at Bill's funeral.

Never mind, that's not such a great shot of her in "Lucy Goes to the Hospital." She behind a window and her face is half covered with a breathing mask.

I was just about to look for it! That's the trouble I'm having, her face is obscurred a lot or we only catch a glimpse of her. In "Ricky's European Booking," she is the one that wins the raffle. When Ethel picked a ticket out of the jar, she announced the winner's name as Barbara Pierce.

It's funny though, I have a very clear picture of her in my head. I don't know if that's from a memory of seeing her clearly in one of the episodes, or if it's from having hundreds of glimpses of her, adding up to a clear mental image.

Uncover your face, Hazel! I wonder if she was also mute. No, I don't really think so. But in spite of all those many appearances on the show, I can't think of a single time she ever said anything. I think she may have quietly mouthed a couple words in "Drafted," and I know in "The Quiz Show," the Freddy Fillmore character was asking her some questions. But because of all the bandages, she couldn't speak and could only shake and nod her head.

I'm still not sure. One of the problems is, we know what episodes she's in, but there is usually another woman in the scene who is similar so it causes some doubt.

The woman looking at the camera kind of has a similar bone structure as Lucy's, but I don't know how much that matters since stand-ins don't have closeups.

She's also in the middle of the second pic, dancing. Hazel also had bit parts in some of Lucy's later movies and on The Lucy Show. I always found it odd that she was used as a stand-in for Lucille Ball because she was old enough to be Lucy's mother. Dede was less than a year older than Hazel!

Well, it turns out Hazel appears in almost all but the last couple minutes of that episode. And alas, she has a voice! Hazel speaks! She has all of three words of dialogue: "yes" and "thank you." But at least I heard it. Hazel appeared in this episode as one of members of the Danfield Women's Volunteer Fire Department who's appearing in the show they're putting on, which ends of being Cleopatra. There are six women altogether: Lucy, Viv, Audrey (Mary Jane Croft), Frannie (Mary Wickes), Mary Lou (Hazel) and Coleen (a bit player I'm not familiar with named Renita Reachi). In the opening scene, the six women do a song and dance number. Considering Hazel was 70 years old at this time, she does quite well. This is a favorite episode of mine.

I am so glad that by knocking three heads together we finally can identify her. After hearing that she was older than I thought, I have been seeing her all along but didn't know it!

Hazel Pierce seems pretty amazing; I would love to know her story and what her relationship was like with Lucy. Seeing her at age 70 with her legs exposed to her hip and dancing with the other ladies, she must have been something special. Also, for Lucy to keep her around meant a lot!

I wonder how she and Lucy became acquainted in the first place, given their huge difference in age. IMDB.COM has no credits listed for her prior to I Love Lucy. Maybe she was one of Dede's pals. Here are a couple checks she earned from Lucy and Desi that were actioned off.

http://comics.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1061&Lot_No=23&src=pr#Photo

One of them, dated July 15, 1953, was for $16.32, about $124 in today's dollars. I'm not sure what that would have been for as I Love Lucy was on hiatus from filming between May 29 and September 11 of that year.

Great job Stacy and Rick. I was beginning to feel like, maybe I am so wrong here. I am thinking of this older woman yet, maybe it was someone else you two were referring to. Funny, we all three were thinking of the same lady. I feel better now that the confusion is over. Hazel certainly doesn't appear "that old" (70 something)...she certainly can keep up with the younger ladies. ;)

Are you talking about the boy in the picture from "Ricky's Movie Offer"? I seem to recall Gregg Oppenheimer saying that he was in the original script and his part got cut out after the dress rehearsal due to time constraints. That may not be exactly right, but it was something like that.

A ha! A clue! I'd really like to look into that, somehow.

Yeah, Gregg has all the original scripts with his Dad's notes and mark-ups, so he has all the answers to most of the oddball questions. Things like Lucy claiming she her nose wasn't supposed to catch on fire in "L.A. at Last!" (it was and it's in the script; special nose was created with a wick inside). Something else I remember him saying about "L.A. at Last!": There was a scene written where Lucy is shown in the bedroom (while Ricky and William Holden are in the living room). She's contemplating what to do, then spies Ricky's make-up kit, opens it up and finds the putty there; thus explaining how she happened to find putty to make the nose. That, of course, wound getting cut. I can't remember, but it was either because of time constraints, or they felt it would be funnier to have the surprise of Lucy coming out to the living room with the nose on and no explanation beforehand of what she was going to do.

It's funny Bart Andrews chose to put that particular "Ricky's Movie Offer" photo in his book with no explanation about the boy. If he didn't know the explanation, all he had to do was ask Gregg!
