Hi!
I'm trying to find a show or two to add to the rotation of stuff that I'm currently watching. I was hoping someone here would be able to recommend something to me.

In particular, I'd like something set in the past, and fairly clean. Something comparable to "Christy" would be great. I already know about "Five Mile Creek", "The Waltons", "Young Riders", "Dr. Quinn", and "Wind At My Back". Those are all good, so I'm looking for anything similar.

I also already know about "Little House On The Prairie" and "Father Murphy".... while those two are ok, they're not my favorites. I've seen "American Dreams", and I liked that, especially the first season. Also, I know about "Emily of New Moon", but I've only seen two episodes of it, so I'm not sure of my opinion of that one yet.

Hopefully what I've written above will help someone give me a recommendation! If you think you know of a show that I might like, please tell me the name, even if it isn't on DVD. Then I'll at least be able to vote for it at tvshowsondvd.com!

The life and times of Grizzly Addams.....it was a great little show but didn't last that long. I don't think it's on DVD though.

DANIEL BOONE was a good show for the whole family. It ran for six seasons
on NBC (1964-1970). Fess Parker (who had earlier played Davy Crockett on
Walt Disney's DISNEYLAND program in several very popular episodes) was
ideally cast as Daniel. It wasn't necessarily always historically accurate (e.g.,
the real Dan'l never wore a coonskin cap), but it was consistently entertaining and must have drawn good ratings. It also had some great guest
stars, incl. Jimmy Dean, Burl Ives, Roger Miller, Shelley Fabares, John Davidson, Ronny Howard, and others.

Try Bewitched - the first five seasons are out on DVD. If you like romance, fantasy and comedy - it's all there! Give it a whirl! :D

By the way, it's AWESOME to have another person on this board who knows & loves Christy. Do you enjoy the book, too?

Kung fu- it takes place in the past. its sorta western .
if you like western check out Bonanza. its really good show. it comes on tv land a lot. you might check out gunsmoke. it another good western show.

Well it's not a tv series, but it's almost as many hours as one :lol: Anyway, you sound like you would like all those Love Comes Softly movies. Have you heard of those or seen them? There's several of them...I'm not sure how many, but maybe 4 or 5, and I think they're still producing them. They show every so often on the Hallmark channel and they are available on dvd too. They are also in print as books by Janette Oke. In fact, there's several things on the Hallmark channel you'd probably like, in terms of tv shows and movies too. Hope you find what you're looking for! :)

I would recommend Happy Days great show!! Took place in the 50's/60's

There's a Canadian show that I blind bought the first season on DVD of and really enjoyed it. It's "Pit Pony". I think there's a 2nd season but it's not on DVD and don't know if it ever will be. I'd love to see it. You could probably buy the first season really cheap on DVD on ebay like I did.

Also there's Dr Quinn Medicine Woman which is set in the past. I've never seen it and the DVDs by A & E are outrageously expensive.

Little House on the Prairie and Father Murphy are two of my all time favorite shows. I guess they're not for everyone though.

I guess I forgot to mention it in my first post, (I have now edited it to reflect this), that I've already seen Dr. Quinn, and like it. I've also seen all of the Love Comes Softly movies, they are good too, (but I think they'd be better if I hadn't read the books, as the movies are really starting to stray from the books. But, that is a topic for another time. :crazy:)

catlover79: I do already have the 1st season of Bewitched. Most of the time I forget that I have it though, and so I forget to watch it! I'll have to work on trying to remember it! :) As far as Christy goes, I think the series is GREAT, I just wish it had gone longer. I just finished the series, and I've seen the first movie, "Return to Cutter Gap", but it's just not the same without all of the original actors. I'm still waiting for Netflix to send me the last two movies. I did enjoy the book, although it got a bit slow once or twice, but overall I did enjoy it. ;)

TV_fan: Thanks for the suggestion of Pit Pony. I think I might try that, it's cheap enough on ebay so that it's worth a shot! If it's not exactly my cup of tea, I'll just give it to my 9 year old cousin, I'm betting she'd like it!

Here's a miniseries - the BBC version of Pride & Prejudice, starring Colin Firth. :drool: It's about 6 hours long and worth every minute!

I reccomend the first 3 seasons of MASH (before it turned into "THE ALAN ALDA SHOW"), THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW, and the first 5 seasons of THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW (two reasons: black-and-white, Barney Fife-'nuff said!)

Definitely second that recommendation. It's a great show! A lot of fun to watch.

Also add "Cagney & Lacey" to your list. A wonderfully, intriguing and sometimes funny show. Great characters! :)

I also forgot to add Quantum leap its a time travle show. it takes place in the past.

You could also try "Here Come The Brides". Its about 3 handsome brothers who own a logging camp in 1800's Seattle who go to New England in search of brides for their workers. Its pretty good. I believe only season 1 is out though.

Leave it to Beaver is a great show. Kenan and kel, but definetly check out Andy Griffith and the Honeymooners.

Dude, I recommend you to watch Eight is Enough (http://www.tvaddicts.tv/movie/drama/Eight_Is_Enough.html). This series was an American television comedy-drama series which ran on ABC from March 15, 1977 until August 29, 1981. The show was modeled after syndicated newspaper columnist Tom Braden, a real-life father with eight children, who wrote a book with the same name. The series was rare in that it was one of the few hour-long television series to use a laugh track.

I'd highly recommend I Love Lucy, All In The Family, and Bewitched.

Here's another good one - the drama Family (1976-80). The first 2 seasons are on DVD (in one set). It lives up to the title - it tells of all the dramatic things that happen to one family.

"Paradise" with Lee Horsley and Sigrid Thornton was a terrific family western set in the 1800s that aired back in the late 80s. Unfortunately it is not available on DVD, but there are some episodes posted on Youtube.

I recommend the western, The Big Valley. There are currently two DVD Sets available and it's shown regularly on MoviePlex and Encore Westerns.
