View Full Version : I Dream of Jeannie 5th Season DVD Boxed Set info...
IDoJOnline 10-24-2007, 06:06 PM Just dropping all you fans a note that production is deep underway on the fifth season and FINAL I Dream of Jeannie DVD Boxed Set. The principle photography is nearly compiled and layout/design is underway. As with previous seasons there will be no extra features sadly, but this set will complete the full series.
Rumors of a 'Complete Series' boxed set are still just that, rumors. I am and have been one of the principle designers of the boxed sets since season three and as of this posting there are no plans to combine all five seasons into one set for release. Also there are no plans to add any extra features to any future sets. I know a great deal of you have been hoping for this, and some of you have been told this would happen. It would be a great addition to the I Dream of Jeannie collections but at this time there are NO PLANS for such a product.
Heidi Dawn 10-24-2007, 10:38 PM Thanks for letting us know! I'm looking forward to completing my 'IDOJ' DVD collection.
catlover79 10-24-2007, 10:49 PM Very cool! Thanks for the headsup.
Robert 13 10-30-2007, 11:23 AM Thanks for the great news! I'm on the last disc of Season 2. By the time I'm done with Season 4, the final season will probably be released.
Incidentally, do you know if the Jeannie movies will be heading to dvd? Does Sony even own them? I would love to see IDOJ: 15 Years Later come to dvd. It's my favorite out of the tv movies even though Larry Hagman was not in it. I love to see Dr. Bellows back to "hallucinating" in the restaurant scene. LOL!
Thanks for the info! I hope to get the entire Jeannie series eventually.
Do you have any info on the next Bewitched season (6, I believe)?
Robert 13 02-08-2008, 03:52 PM So what happens with the tv movies, if anything?
Carrie 02-25-2008, 11:26 AM Season 6 of Bewitched was just announced by Sony to be released on May 20th, so let's hope that season 5 of IDOJ is not far behind!

Movie12 02-26-2008, 11:49 AM Bewitched - Season 6 will now be released on May 6, 2008 instead of May 20, 2008. Also Sony has provided new and final cover art for Bewitched - Season 6.
You can check out the new release date and new and final cover art for Bewitched - Season 6 at...

Subspace 03-02-2008, 04:06 PM Thanks for the heads-up, looking forward to the release of Season 5. :)
catlover79 06-07-2008, 12:37 PM I Dream of Jeannie: 15 Years Later will be released late this year on DVD packaged in the I Dream of Jeannie Complete Series Boxed Set. Sony originally had not planned on releasing a 'complete series' however we are in the process of designing the packaging now. It should turn out pretty nice.
Will both IDOJ movies be in the complete series set?
CAJeannieFan57 06-07-2008, 04:09 PM How about those of us who have been loyal fans and already own 4 seasons of IDOJ with plans to buy the 5th when it comes out -
HOW DO WE GET THE MOVIE WITHOUT BUYING THE WHOLE SERIES ALL OVER AGAIN?????
NOT FAIR to loyal fans!!!! PLEASE tell me they'll sell it separately -

I agree - what a bum deal.
Jack77 06-08-2008, 09:03 PM I just want you all to know that this is old news! I was the first & only person to report this back on 2-18-07 and Patterson at IDOJ online challenged me & my source. Again this has been the original plan all along and has been in the works ever since. In spit of what Patterson at IDOJ Online tells you that Sony had originally not planned a complete box set with extras, this is not the case! Ever since Sony saw The Brady Bunch Box Set with their extras, it was announced at a meeting that they would do the same for I Dream Of Jeannie. Now keep in mind everything I reported in my original post over a year ago (see bottom link) was in the planning stages. The main extras that Sony was focusing on was adding the two reunion movies & The 1999 Donny & Marie Reunion which included all three stars & the late Sidney Sheldon. Sony does own the rights to this special, so we might still get this as well on the set. As far as brand new interviews are concerned, Barbara Eden did return to Sunset Gower last year to tape some footage, so whether or not that makes it onto the final set is still up in the air in a cloud of pink smoke, but I will keep you posted!
I hate to tell you Patterson, but I told you so. I guess Sony is not at liberty to tell you everything especially when you live all the way in Atlanta, Georgia!
But I do love your art work!

P.S. I guess you owe me a "FREE" painted I Dream Of Bottle. So now you can "hand it to me" PAY UP!!!
Lee G 06-09-2008, 12:06 PM I'm not really a fan of these DVD extras, I think they are overrated. Usually it's stuff you look at once out of curiosity then you forget about it. One extra feature that's nice and worth watching is interviews with cast members giving their thoughts on the making of the show. As far as I Dream Of Jeannie goes, the reunion movies aren't that good anyway and lack the charm of the original show. The five individual seasons on DVD are fine with me, I won't waste money on the complete series box set.
Jude The Obscure 06-12-2008, 09:52 AM I feel the same way about some of my other faves, Lee. It would be nice to have some of the reunion stuff but not if it means I have to buy the entire series all over again!
Heidi Dawn 06-13-2008, 02:30 PM I saw the reunion movies on YouTube, they weren't that great, in my opinion.

It just wasn't the same without Larry Hagman.
CAJeannieFan57 06-25-2008, 03:44 PM I appreciate your candor, IDOJonline. If you have any chat with the folks that think of ideas, you can tell them this:
Copies of the reunion movies come up on eBay and sell pretty easily. They're pretty well just copies of someone's VHS or BetaMax taping from TV when the movies aired. I'd imagine that Jeannie fans would snap up single copies of the movies, particularly the 1985 movie. Yes, it would be die-hard fans. They could compare it to "Rescue from Gilligan's Island" that made it into "cheap DVD" form. Tina Louise was not in that one, but it was decent nonetheless.
I have both movies - one came from a friend who made me a VHS copy from her BetaMax taping. The other came from eBay. Both were pretty lousy copies, but as a die-hard IDOJ fan, I'd buy commercial copies if I could. (I also have an import of Disney's Song of the South and of the Jeannie and Babu cartoon series. I'd buy either one on the legitimate market if I could.)
CAJeannieFan57 08-24-2008, 10:55 AM As was expected, Sony is announcing the release of the complete set. Another retailer leaked it - the set will be released on November 4th, with the 1st reunion movie as planned. The box looks pretty neat.
But I'm not about to spend another $150-175 to get a movie and a special box.

I don't blame you - I know I wouldn't.

I'm not going to buy it as I already have the five individual seasons. But I am curious about two things.
First, I wonder if the 1st season shows will be in the original black and white or if they will be colorized. I don't imagine they will issue two versions of the complete series, so the 1st season will either be black and white or colorized.
Second, I'm curious to know if the episodes will now be all uncut, as there are some sneaky cuts in some episodes on the individual season DVD's.
CAJeannieFan57 08-24-2008, 02:45 PM As of this past week, the issue of color vs b&w for the 1st season was still unknown by tvshowsondvd.com, the bearer of the news of the boxed set.
I've said this before about sneaky cuts - I honestly believe that it's a big possibility that Sony had no other choice. Old TV shows get lost, broken, and torn up. Some disappear altogether. If the only copy Sony had of a given epi had some minor cuts in it, and that's what they issued, it's better than none of that episode altogether.

I'm not an expert on the subject, but my suspicion is all the Jeannie episodes exist intact and Sony chose to make these little cuts here and there on the DVD's. What their reason would be for doing that, I don't know. It's not like I Dream Of Jeannie is a long forgotten show and they had to dig deep into the film vaults to obtain decaying prints of the episodes. Sony also issues Bewitched, and other than a few questionable episodes in season three all those episodes are uncut as far as I know.
I Dream Of Jeannie season one seems to be free of any cuts. But some episodes in seasons 2 thru 5 are not totally complete. And they did a poor transfer job with the Bootsie Nightingale episode. For about six minutes there is a jittery picture, and I believe there's a scene missing from that episode as well.
HelloLarry 08-26-2008, 11:31 AM This 'complete series' hi-jinx is SOP with companies now so this doesn't surprise me.
They should release the complete series first and then the individual seasons. It worked great for Get Smart. I was lucky to get my MASH and Brady Bunch DVDs out on EBay early enough when their respective 'complete series' sets were announced. I wound up selling them for enough $$ that the money I wound up spending on the complete series was either zero or equvalent to what I would have paid for the last season anyway. It also saved on shelf space. Just a thought in case any of you are interested, that is one way you can reduce the pain if you are considering the complete series.
I don't know how anyone else feels but while the packaging looks cool, if you are an avid collector of DVDs like I am, you find yourself running out of room to store or display all of this stuff because of the cumbersome packaging.
BTW...the first season in the complete series packaging will be the colorized shows. There was a note on tvshowsondvd.com yesterday or early this morning I believe.
IDoJOnline 08-28-2008, 04:09 AM I'm not going to buy it as I already have the five individual seasons. But I am curious about two things.

Unfortunately there will be nothing new DVD wise in the set. The episodes are all pressed from the previous releases. The only new material will be the 55 collectible card set and display box. The cards are really beautiful, rare photos, trivia and rewritten episode synopsis. The bottle the DVD's are set in is also really pretty, it's a metalic bottle with embossed correct designs. I'm sure you'll be able to find the set cheap after a while, but be advised they are only pressing a limited amount of sets so they won't be around forever.
Lee G 09-08-2008, 10:43 AM Can anyone verify if the episode I'll See You In CUBA is a cut version on the DVD? If it is, which scene is missing? The episode runs about 23:10, while most season five episodes are in the 24:10 range. I noticed there are other episodes on the season five set that run in the 23:35-23:55 range, so I'm inclined to believe the shorter episodes are edited versions.
I Dream Of Jeannie was a lot like Get Smart with the fact both shows had 30 episodes in the first two seasons (Jeannie season two has 31 eps) and 26 episodes in seasons 3, 4, & 5. And the average episode running times for both shows were shorter in seasons 4 & 5 (less than 25 minutes) as opposed to seasons 1, 2, & 3 (over 25 minutes).
IDoJOnline 09-13-2008, 08:31 PM I worked side by side with Sony on the production of the I Dream of Jeannie Seasons 3-5 and Complete Series Boxed Sets. From what I understood Sony actually does NOT have access to any 'original' episodes from the original run of I Dream of Jeannie. It has however the syndication prints used for distribution from the mid 1990's. If you'll notice in the copyrights for I Dream of Jeannie it says Copyright 1965 Renewed 1993 CPT (Columbia Pictures Television) Holdings. A lot of people seem to think Sony has the original materials just sitting in a warehouse. In some cases they do but I've come to learn that with any old company, as old employees quit, die, get fired or replaced, new employees don't always know where everything is. Lately Sony's left hand doesn't know what Sony's right hand is doing. Too many cooks in the kitchen... etc.

Could be, but I believe syndicated episodes are usually trimmed down to about 22 1/2 minutes. None of the Jeannie episodes on the DVD's are that short, but some are in the 23:30 range. It's possible that some episodes just run a little short, but there are these odd little edits in some of the DVD episodes and it's a mystery to me as to how or why this happened. The first season seems to have all uncut episodes. Some episodes in seasons 2 thru 5 are not totally complete.
