Film director Robert Rodriguez's dream of remaking Barbarella looks to be over because he is insisting on casting fiancée Rose McGowan in the lead role. Universal Studios originally offered $200 million to do a remake of the cult 60's Sci-fi movie, but now they want to axe the project - and insiders are pinning the blame on casting decisions.

A source tells the New York Observer, "It's sort of embarrassing for everyone involved, no-one thinks Rose can carry the movie, but Robert won't listen."

McGowan is best known for the TV series Charmed. Universal are said to be keen for more of a 'heavy-weight' actress to take the role. Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry and Jessica Alba are all said to interested.

that is bs, I'm more likely to see a movie with Rose as the lead than Jessica Alba. Charmed lasted five seasons with Rose in the cast, Dark Angel only lasted two seasons total. How is Alba a bigger star because of The Fantastic Four? Rose has a bigger "geek" following thanks to Charmed, Scream and Grindhouse.

I didn't know they were remaking such a classic cult film. And quite frankly, I don't think ANY of those actresses mentioned above has what it takes to be the new "Barbarella."

If Universal does decide to go forward with the project, they should cast a beefy, yet feminine, blonde bombshell for the lead role. Nicole, Halle, and Jessica are skinny little things. And Rose just has a big ass.

Jane Fonda will probably vomit if she ever hears that these women are interested in the role.
