I always love a good creepy story around Halloween...the true ones are the best, but I suppose no one would know if you made it up.
Ever seen a ghost? Something unexplained happen? So what creepy thing happened to you? Mine happens to be true:
We have a restaurant in my home town that is in an old house next to an old brewery which has been closed for years. The house belonged to the family that ran the brewery and was said to be haunted because several of the family members died in the house, either by suicide or being murdered when one of the oldest sons lost his marbles and killed six of the family members. The house is mostly as it was originally, with the main level (the living room, dining room, and parlor) where the restaurant is now. The upstairs (where the bedrooms are) has all the original furnishings and is entirely closed to the public because they say that's where the most haunting activity is. The kitchen downstairs is also said to be active, as well as the tub in the bathroom on the first floor (which is a public bathroom now and the tub is still in it) and the wine cellar.
Well I've been to that restaurant lots of times and absolutely nothing happened. Every year there's a big Halloween party there, and I'd always attended, but a few years ago I said I'd help out (some friends of ours own the restaurant) because they were short of help. So I was helping keep the snacks replenished and I was alone down in the kitchen and I turned to my left and one of the drawers was standing open. I hadn't been in any of the drawers and I was pretty sure it wasn't open before because I couldn't have walked through the aisle to where I was standing at that moment if it had been open. I also know that no one else had come in the kitchen without me knowing because there was one doorway and I was facing it. The wall with the cabinets and drawers and a counter was behind me, and I stood working at another "island" type counter.
I was a little creeped but not too much yet so I just closed it. I went about my business and heard the cabinet behind my head creak open. It was standing open, and I creeped out a little because I knew what I had just heard was it opening when no one was there to open it. They had latches on them but I hadn't heard the latch click open, but I had just pushed it shut and latched it moments ago when I took a bowl out of there. omg: I don't usually scare easily, but there's something about things moving by themselves when you're alone in a room. I started to get that creepy feeling inside and I calmly turned and closed the open cabinet. Just as I did and started to turn back to my snacks, out of the corner of my eye I saw the same top drawer move. It slowly opened all the way. That really creeped me out because it opened slowly but steadily, and all the way until it couldn't go anymore. I didn't hang around...I grabbed my bowl of chips and ran just as the second and third drawers started to open too!!
No one believed me at all except Paul, the owner and a perfectly respectable and sensible guy, who guessed pretty darn close to what had happened to me before I even told him. He said he has experienced similar things in the kitchen with the fridge and the oven opening by themselves too. He said they're pretty sure that is the spirit of the youngest daughter who used to play in the kitchen and climb on open drawers when her nanny was in there making the girl's lunch every day. He totally understood when I told him I thought I needed to go home.
