There's a scene between Morticia and Uncle Fester. She's trying to think of a phony name underwhich to sell her stock, so Gomez and the broker wont know it's her.

Morticia: (to Uncle Fester) How about Jones?

Uncle Fester: Now what kind of a name is that.

Morticia: Smith?

Uncle Fester: Much better.

Since Morticia was played by Carolyn Jones, I just took it as an inside joke.

I took it as an inside joke as well and I knew it was Carolyn Jones who played Morticia

I never took it that way, I always thought the joke was that Jones and Smith are 2 such commun names and Fester thought Jones was a weird name BUT thought Smith was perfectly normal.
