Calif. Wildfires Rage As Winds Increase
MALIBU, Calif., Oct. 22, 2007(CBS/AP) From the high desert to the Pacific Ocean, out-of-control wildfires engulfed swaths of drought-parched Southern California, claiming one life, destroying several homes and a church in Malibu, and forcing an entire community to evacuate.

Thousands more homes remained at risk as hot, dry Santa Ana desert winds, with some gusts over 100 mph, continued to churn into the region early Monday.

Firefighters started the weekend on high alert as forecasters warned of strong winds. But by Sunday night, they had to admit they were overwhelmed.

"You do not expect something to stretch our resources to this magnitude," Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Sam Padilla said. "To try and staff something this big, you cannot predict it."

"It's like an apocalypse," a resident told CBS' The Early Show. "It's really quite shocking."

The Malibu fire was among about a dozen blazes that burned more than 35,000 acres from north of Santa Barbara to San Diego. Late Sunday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in seven Southern California counties.

"There's going to be literally thousands of homes that are going to be threatened, based on the movement of the fire," Los Angeles County Fire Chief P. Michael Freeman said.

The fire briefly surrounded Pepperdine University, forcing students to take shelter in the gym, reports CBS News correspondent Bill Whitaker. The strong Santa Ana winds have also created firestorms in other communities. Horses were let out to avoid being overrun.http://wwwimage.cbsnews.com/common/images/bug_story.gif 60 Minutes: Scott Pelley reports how climate change and decades of forestry mistakes have created conditions for out-of-control mega fires. (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/10/18/60minutes/main3380176.shtml)
Things weren't improving Monday: Two new wildfires broke out in San Diego county, bringing to four the number of blazes burning there.

One person died in a fire near San Diego, which burned more than 14,000 acres - or about 22 square miles - about 70 miles southeast of San Diego, just north of the Mexican border town of Tecate, California Department of Forestry spokesman Matt Streck said. Details were not immediately available.

Four firefighters and at least 10 other people were hospitalized, Streck said. Some of the injured were hikers, and others may be illegal immigrants.

Another blaze devoured more than 5,000 acres in northern San Diego County and forced the evacuation of the community of Ramona, which has a population of about 36,000.

Several structures were burned on the edge of town and sheriff's deputies called residents to alert them the fire was approaching the city, said San Diego sheriff's Lt. Phil Brust.

In Malibu, about 700 firefighters worked to protect hundreds of homes in several upscale communities nestled in the hills. About 1,500 people were evacuated.

The blaze destroyed the Malibu Presbyterian Church. "It's devastating," Pastor Greg Hughes told Whitaker. "This is a building that is filled with memories, over 50 years of memories."

One of the homes consumed by flames was the landmark Castle Kashan, a stately fortress-like home with turrets and arched windows. Chunks of brick fell from the exterior of the burning building overlooking the coast.

No residents or firefighters were injured, Fire Chief Freeman said.

The Hodge castle was a Malibu landmark. The $14 million stone and brick home sat on a hilltop overlooking the California coast. The castle belonged to Lilly Lawrence, the daughter of a former Iranian oil minister. She said she was able to gather a few things before the fire engulfed her home.

Countless heirlooms and priceless antiques were lost but the firemen did manage to save photos and Elvis Presley memorabilia, reports CBS National News correspondent Hattie Kauffman.

Winds carried embers across the Pacific Coast Highway, closing the popular road and setting fire to cars and trees in the parking lot of a shopping center where a supermarket, drug store and other shops were damaged.

"This fire is zero percent contained, which means we're at the mercy of the wind," acting Malibu Mayor Pamela Conley Ulich said Sunday.

In all, five homes and two commercial buildings had been confirmed lost throughout the Malibu area, Los Angeles County Fire Chief P. Michael Freeman said. Nine more homes were damaged, he said.

The fire is expected to burn for another two to three days, he said. Until the blaze is extinguished, "there will literally be thousands of homes that will be threatened at one time or another," he said.

The fire may have been started by downed power lines, Capt. Mike Brown said.

"This is a conflagration we knew was going to come at some point," Los Angeles County Zen Yaroslavsky said at a Malibu press conference Sunday, noting Southern California's ongoing dry spell. "We were cruising for a bruising. We are very, very lucky as we stand here tonight that the damage has been as limited as it has been."

Malibu, home to about 13,000 people, including many celebrities, stretches along 27 miles of Pacific coastline. Last January, a wildfire driven by Santa Ana winds destroyed the home of actress Suzanne Somers and three other multimillion-dollar residences.

The community also is home to about 25 rehabilitation facilities, including Promises Residential Treatment Center, whose guests have included Britney Spears, Ben Affleck, Charlie Sheen, Diana Ross and Matthew Perry.

We are surrounded by fires. Our county is on the state of emergency list. We have two fires going on in nearby towns. In fact, because of the fierce winds, a downed power line caused a fire on an empty lot here in our city. We had a another downed power line that caused one of our major streets (Highway 1) to be partially shut down. It is crazy. Trees are toppling over, palm fronds are everywhere (hear me Tara!!!!!).

It was earlier in the year that Suzanne's house burned down in Malibu. I think that fire was started by an arsonist.

My parents live in one of the cities that was evacuated. It's not pretty, and the winds continue to build speed making things worse. Not a good sign. I heard that the fires in Malibu were started by downed power lines. Who knows, it seems every year some fire bug or some idiot that doesn't know how to dispose of a cigarett ruins hundreds of acres.

We have continuous news coverage on three of the major news channels and I can't believe how many fires are out of control in so many parts of So. Cal. These Santa Ana winds are horrible. What makes it horrible is that the winds are hot, but with these fires roaring nearby, we have to keep the windows and doors shut to keep the dust, ash and smoke out of here, but still, my house is filled with grit. So, it is uncomfortable to be inside while it is hot outside.

There are at least 16 fires burning in Southern California now. I don't think there has ever been this many at one time, it's scary. The fire in Orange County has been declared an arson.

My family was evacuated from their home for two days; they were able to return this morning; this has been the worse firestorm for San Diego; most, if not all the people I know that live in that area, have been affected. I cannot reach a friend of mine, whom lives in Escondido, and also I cannot reach another friend, who lives in Rancho Bernando, one of the hardest hit areas. My family and the home where I was born and raised in was only a few miles away from the Rancho Santa Fe area, where more than several homes were burned to the ground:( ..This whole ordeal has been very scary for myself, my family and my friends who live in Southern California.
I am sorry for what your family and friends have been going through Tara. What started out as Santa Ana winds, has turned into an out of control nightmare. Be strong sweetie, just remember, things can be replaced, not your loved ones. As long as they are alive and safe, that is the best news we can hear from you! :bighug:

Hey, I know Janice has a brother who lives in San Diego... JANICE, ARE YOU AROUND? IS EVERYTHING OK WITH YOUR BROTHER?

I am so blessed to live where I live, although we are dealing with bad air quality, smoke, ash and grit flying all around us and the heat, I thank God that is all we have to deal with. Seeing the smoke overhead and not being able to even see the hills and mountains that surround us is a reminder of the severity of what is going on. This is the worst we have had as far as fires are concerned. My house has so much ash all around and even though I have kept the windows and doors shut, the ash and dirt has found its way inside. I am going to try and give it a good cleaning today.

I can't even let my dog outdoors. My son goes to school but the school has been keeping the children indoors, with no recess and no lunch outside.

I hope you find out something soon from those friends of yours Tara. I am sure with the fires, cell phone use has probably been affected. If your friends were relocated, they are probably in those make-shift camps that they set up since so many locations have been filled. I am hoping and praying that all is safe with those you love Tara!!!!

Irene, I just spoke to my friend, who lives in Rancho Bernando, and her home survived; she was also able to return to her house to pick up some medication; so, that is really good news.
Oh that is great news. See, how quickly God answered our prayers!;) I am happy for you and for your friend. ;)

Not to mention the lives lost. :( It really is terrible. I feel so bad for the animals as well. Pets and wild animals. My boyfriend said he saw two coyotes behind his work yesterday. Obviously they were scared and left the hills looking for safety and food.

I just got this email from CBS News.com:
"CBS News has learned U.S. officials plan to declare California's Santiago
fire as arson and offer a $50,000 reward."

I hope they find the suspect(s) and fit them with the strictest penalty the law provides. They deserve nothing less.

Due to the high winds (I estimate the strongest at my house at 60-70 mph), there was the usual broken tree branches on the streets.

The first photo shows just that, a large branch broken off a tree on my street.

The second photo shows a tree across the street from my house which has a split trunk. I noticed it was split a few months ago, but the winds are not helping. The city put yellow tape around it so it looks like it will be removed. A good idea to do it before it topples over.

The third photo is looking down the street; the tree with the split trunk is on the right and the tree in front of my house is on the left, which I'm glad looks okay because it provides a lot of shade.

The fourth photo is of the smoke from the distant Lake Arrowhead fire.

I'm glad to hear your family's home is ok, Hollywood Rock Chic. These fires have been crazy. I'm in San Diego and we almost had to evacuate on Monday. All the areas around us were evacuating so it really looked like we were next, but we were never issued an evacuation--just advised to be prepared. I think we're safe from it now, but of course the smoke and ash is still everywhere.

Thank You...my family left before they received the reverse 911 call; but it was so nerve wrecking; we live only a few miles away from the fire that destroyed a lot of homes in the Del Dios area. When on the news that they declared our street in jeopardy, I fell on my knees and just prayed and prayed. But, fortunately for my family, the evacuation was lifted this morning...and they were able to return home, after spending a few days in a hotel. Just very stressful and scary, too; the winds on Monday were horrific, and the smell of smoke and the sky was so omonious..I was seriously thinking of moving out of Southern California, because this is not the first time, that I, nor my family has dealt with this terribly situation; we were near the Cedar fire of 2003, too.
I can imagine how nerve wrecking that must have been. My family was very nervous and our street wasn't even declared in jeopardy. I'm glad to hear you and your family are safe. I agree about the sky being so ominous on Monday, especially during the night. Going outside was so eerie, you couldn't hear anything but ambulances, like a war zone. We were also very near the Cedar fire four years ago--literally just a few miles away from my house! It would take me two minutes to drive to that area. I feel very badly for those whose homes were burned in that fire, and then again in these fires. Very sad. I have been so fortunate to have been safe in the fires four years ago and in these.

Well, the Malibu Canyon fire is pretty much under control now. Today there were no more winds, the heat subsided but the air was still not very good. It looked awful and it reminded me of a bad hazy day in Los Angeles. I can't wait for the ocean air to take over again.

The Santa Anas are real intense. We had Santa Anas less than a month ago but it was nowhere like it was this time. We had so many power lines and electrical lines go down. The power was out for us at one point. Sure the winds take their tolls on the trees, but this time, the winds lasted longer and with the intensity it was just horrible.

Update: my close friend, whom lives in Escondido, is back home, too..YAY!!!
It is still smokey outside, but it is not as bad as it has been; there is no longer an orange halo around the moon; none of the fires in the San Diego county area are fully contained, actually, the news mentioned that the Harris fire in the south county, will not be fully contained till NOVEMBER!!!
I have been staying away from watching the local news, my nerves are shattered already; but the latest I have heard is that over 280 homes in Rancho Bernardo were destroyed, and R.B. (as, we locals call, Rancho Bernardo) is only ten miles EAST from my parents home...very scary, that the fire was so close to their house and to the city, where I was raised in.
Oh good. I know you were worried abt your friend there. Glad to hear you finally heard some news. I was frazzled by the constant news that seemed to be airing 24/7. It gets annoying when you see a fire out of control and the camera is focusing on it like it is going to suddenly stop or something.

Ireneparalegal

Yeah, it is annoying, and frustrating, too...they have this idiot of a weatherman from KUSI (channel 9) and he seemed to be in everyone's way, interviewing people as they evacuated from their homes:rolleyes: But, I woke up this morning, looked outside and PRAISE THE LORD, it is foggy..not smoke, but a cool, wet FOG..Just what they need, here in San Diego...I never been so happy seeing FOG before.
Oh I hear that. It was such a change of pace from what we had been experiencing. I know San Diego is still roaring in flames, but at least Malibu is contained and our two other nearby fires (Moorpark and Piru) have been somewhat controlled.

Yeah, if O.J. set the fires, then nothing will happen.

Yep, a very, very light rain here, too. Enough to wet the street, though.
Not really enough to put out the fires, but it made the air much more moist which is a help.
Let's hope this will be the end of the fires... they always seem to happen just before Halloween which puts a damper on that holiday. :(
